- Four long years had passed since McLaughlin's last record when JMT released Live at the Royal Festival Hall in 1990. The brilliant percussionist Trilok Gurtu, of Oregon fame, joined him-along with superb bassist Kai Eckhardt-to form an exciting band which was to exist in one form or another (with revolving bassists) for five more years. The mostly acoustic music which fills this album, augmented by electric bass and John's guitar synthesizer, is a mix of standard jazz, fusion and Indian-influenced rhythms and melody lines.
Personnel:
John McLaughlin - Guitar
Trilok Gurtu - Percussion
Kai Eckhardt - Fretless Bass - Hudba
John is the reason I picked up the classical guitar. His tone is absolutely wonderful with nylon strings.
I remember seeing this show with this exact lineup and being totally fixed on Trilok the whole time. He is on whole different plane of existence.
I remember when i was 15 years old (im 35 now).. and I see this on tv.. I just cant believe my eyes and ears... It was like listen the music of the future...and still it is today.
John McLaughlin is a strange influence on my playing. I got into him in 92 and I felt embarrassed for years because he was Awesome but he was Awesome at somthing I didn't know was cool.
I got into Jazz fusion totally by accident but I dug it.
In 92 I went on a roadtrip with my family. I had walkman and bunch of tapes.
I had 1984 Van Halen, Night ranger Dawn Patrol, Al di meola Casino and Tony Macalpine Maximum security.
Honestly Casino is a masterpiece.
So is 1984.
Luv and Peace.
A big THX to Kai, John and Trilok.
fck I know this album from start to end, I can play it in my head without listening ever again.
I love John...
I was fortunate enough to catch this group playing two sets a night for a week. Amazing and inspirational
This album changed my life.
Me too..:-))
Same here...
drumtravelfun
mine too!
Ayup
Me too.
Cannot believe how tight these guys are? Perfect!
Some of my favorite McLaughlin. I saw this trio in about '92 but I was a little too young & dumb to really get it. Still, I remember being impressed.
Brilliant. Been playing the CD version for 20 years, and only now the mystery is solved of how Kai sounded like he was playing both fretted and fretless bass in the same song (and wonderfully). A double neck, who would have known? Thanks for posting the video.
One of the best guitarists ever! Blessed be the Mc Laughlin!
I remember many years ago playing this live alboum again and again..
briliant!!
I just love the way they break down, decompose, create and play with rhythm, sounds and notes. 3 masters having fun.
Amazing!!! I love this Mclaughlin project!
One of the Greatest Instrumental Albums ever recorded the first time i heard Florianapolis it blew my mind and it still does today!!! Phenomenal Guitar Playing and Great Musicianship from this Trio.
Unbelievable chemistry and virtuosity.
phenomenal, just the purest of musical experience.
holy shit, this had some of the coolest percussion that I have ever seen.
I saw them in Vancouver. Trilok was to die for!
I saw this live in Atlanta in 90 or 91 (can't remember) I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, it was so awesome
ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT MUSIC FOR THE GLOBE.
I was at this show. Had no idea it was videoed as well as audio recorded. I was a little nervous as I went with a great guitar player who said, as we walked into the auditorium, "If he plays one Indian line I'm outta here." Needless to say we sat entranced by every minute. It's still one of the absolute highlights of my musical life. Thank you so much for posting!
This is amazing !!!!!
This was the line-up for my first John McLaughlin show ever. Amazing show.
A brilliant display of musical colors by the finest musical masters. Just stunning...
best jazz guitar album on planet earth. No discussion.
always a discussion...
@@kingcobra8840 whats better?
@@GuitarguyRichard56 hahah...great answer..he never will reply...🤣
Thanks so much to You tube for allowing these great musical documents to be uploaded!!
I think i speak on behalf of musicians worldwide..
I was there.....thanks for the post...just made my day!!!!
Amazing! These dudes are on a whole other level... I think the Men in Black might be onto them by now.
I dont think music can get any better than this!
I saw this trio at the now gone "Bottom Line" in NYC - Amazing and eye opening to say the least.
Thanks for posting!
This is just indescribable.
For the first 90 seconds or so it's seems they are having trouble hearing one another but then they lock in and it's amazing! What a great band and the music... superb! Faved!
Amazing performance!
simply superb music and magic craftmanship
out of this world!
What an inspiration. 'Monsters' - all of them.
My all-time favorite McLaughlin musical endeavor, the chemistry was just magical, and it wasn't just about the chops, this was very deep, soulful music on a very high level. Trilok was a perfect foil for John. Another thing I loved was how John reworked some earlier pieces from Adventures in Radioland, and dramatically improved them.
TheOwl in total agreement with your assessment.
yes. special vibes for sure! One of my all time favorite guitar albums.
Happy 70th John !
John can put a million melodies in one piece and then make them different every time
Awestruck. Floored. Dumbstruck!!!! Thank you for posting this. I'm saving this to my archive to watch again and again.
Tenho-os num disco chamado Que Alegria, uma maravilha! A melhor formação, apta a desenvolver os temas desse gigante da música, Mclaughlin.
Saw him several times on this tour....wish they would do it again.
Excelente fusion, agradable de escuchar y compartir, en todo momento, muy buen acompañamiento, excelente
i saw this band in ... canberra! awesome gig
I recorded this show on vhs from the TV, and I must have watched it a million times back in the day... Thanks much for this priceless upload!!!
The first time I heard McLaughlin (as a young, aspiring guitarist) I just wanted to quit.
Thankfully, I didn't.
Fantastic..
I saw him on this tour in Seattle. Amazing show.
Trio de otra dimension
This Live has been recorded at french Antibes Juan-les-Pins Jazz Festival (1990/07/21) and this video is a french tv program (Jazz à Juan).
Great post ... great lineup ... amazing musicianship
Kai Eckhardt very cool zbs hot bass
Totally Music
This was actually performed at "Jazz à Juan" Festival, in Antibes (France). Great one indeed!
This is GOLD
CLASS ~ Thank you
yeah this album was the best album of the 80th 90th and 2000
I was at this concert, amazing performance, I remember my mate Steve and I; we had one of the boxes at the hall, and smuggled some beers through to enjoy the show Mothers Tongues was just awesome, my mate Steve burped during one of the songs and John laughed, happy memories :-)
No actually I was lying, it was someone else, I heard it too :-)
This clip isn't from the Festival Hall (it's still good though)! I was there too. Didn't dare breathe during Trilok Gurtu's solo on Mother Tongues, let alone burp.
"... augmented by electric bass and John's guitar synthesizer, is a mix of standard jazz, fusion and Indian-influenced rhythms and melody lines." This from the show-more section. This all makes for a most fantastical sound. Yes I to thank You Tube for allowing these great musical pieces to be uploaded. For the World needs all the helpful vibrations and harmonics as possible. This will help Mother Nature Balance out the harmonics that have gone flat. :-) Amazing. I see TeeTomthomas about 2:26:)
Trilok Gurtu was unbelievable here. Holding the band together while soloing on JM's lines is a feat very few can manage let alone master.
Trilok gurtu's percussion and sound design changed my outlook on music. He adds so much atmosphere.
Love this footage !
WOOOOOOOOO HOT DAMN!
Tres monstruos!!
wooden chimes sound just like water. just awesome.thanx so much.
OMG! I saw this line-up back at the Bottom Line in NYC.
I can't get enough of this. Thanks for posting!!!
There ain't a tempo in existence that Johnny Mac regrets. One of the very few musicians in history (on any instrument) that isn't limited by the instrument that he plays.
Trilok Gurtu was brilliant as usual 23.20
Brilliant!!!!
Unbeliavable guys, how do they do it? Trilok is unbelivably fast and precise, and so are Mr Eckhardt and Mclaughlin, too
This is what it sounds like when gods throw lightning bolts at each other! I saw this very trio at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver. Just flat out unreal. Winston Churchill once said "I love a man who smiles when he fights"......just watch these guys smiling and laughing as they play!
Mui lindo.
Incroyable ..... Certainement l'un des trio les "plus" abouti ^^
Bravo Messieurs
uno de los mejores conciertos que he visto en mi vida y en youtube.
gracias por subirlo.
Thanks for posting ... Have been looking for aeons for a video from this iconic incarnation of the trio so please post again if you happen to stumble upon the Southbank performance..
MARVELLOUS!!!!!!!!!
you are right ! The reason for this "wreckage" could be - i suppose- that there are two more beats just at the end of the theme , like this : 4+4+4+6
but anyway they are giants
Mesmerized. Magnificent. In exotic musical land. A most delightful Gem of a share from an Angel BEing that knows their musicians. So happy it was shared with me. Thanks to the artists and the poster too. : -)))) YEP Smiling all the way to bed to dream land. :-)))
I'm not 100% sure, but I think this concert was on 26th November 1989.
Love and peace to all of us!
Great Jazz Jam !...The Best Stars !...
This is one of my most favourite gigs of all time ... I was lucky enough to see JM perform this at the Byron Bay RSL.. indeed we were staying at the same hotel only 2 rooms away! It was a great night Trilok was unbelievable ... different Bass player though ...can't remember who?
...Dominique DiPiazza...I was there to...and a few days later at..Brisbane Concert Hall. The greatest gig of my life.
Heheh,i never noticed that before but the band has a huge wreckage in " One night stand" at 11:17,and John laughs at that.
It takes them a while to get the song right way around again :D
Браво. Bravo.
just found this accidently!! k`in awsome!!! im a fan from here on in!!! x
You know this musician well. Thanks for sharing. I agree with Brilliant. :-))
Una excusa perfecte per viure!!! Gràcies.
Extraordinary sound art!!! / ¡Arte sonoro extraordinario!!!
Saw this trio a couple times , we recorded it too , I gotta look for the tapes , one show was as warm up for miles Davis at the Greek theater berkeley ca. , damn! I miss those days ..
Timeless..
love trilok........
Oui! C'est magnifique musique! This is a wonderful recording/video.
Kai is outstanding, but who isn't in this band?
universal!
XX century: the perhaps-unimprovable-super-virtuous-musicians siecle!!!!
straordinari
Don´t miss 20:40!!! Great percussion!
You find it on the album "Live at the Royal Festival Hall"
I somehow get why John and Trilok hired Kai Eckhardt after they had originally started this project with Jeff Berlin on bass, but although their third choice, Dominique DiPiazza, is a monster player, why they got rid of Kai is way beyond me. The guy is obscenely good.
They didn't "get rid of" Kai. The story I heard was that they were touring Brazil when Kai fell for a beautiful waitress at a restaurant they had been going to. He left the band to pursue the relationship. John and Trilok were no doubt sorry to see him go. Di Piazza wasn't a bad replacement -- equally amazing.
7:09 the harmony at that part is so clean & beautiful
