SPRING HOUSE. I can still hear guineas!! MINE!! lol
Thank you! My brain is mush! Yes. 😂
SPRING HOUSE. I USED TO HAVE ONE
Hi Mary, we have talked about that. That is what they used to do here. 😊🙂
I LOVE the sound of the guineas in the background! Reminds me of my childhood in the countryside at my Grandparents'! 😃
Hi USA 4EVER, love the name. 🙂
I love that it brought good memories. We like having them. They are little bug destroyers. 🙂
Spring house🤗. Great DIY project and a great harvest! Please no kilt🤣😂
Thanks Robbie Lynn. My brain isn’t working. Lack of sleep has my brain mush. 😂
Thank you! I agree, no kilt. 😆
Spring house
Thanks Peter. We are considering a spring house. Any ideas on how to keep potatoes dry in there? Thanks!
Spring House. Had one growing up. Snakes LOVE em.
HI Virginia, thanks for the comment. Snakes love spring houses?
Loved your idea of DIY root cellar!
Thanks so much Elaine!
How did the paper bags on the inside of the cans go this last year?
Hi River, it went well. It helped. Not as great as a root cellar but it works when you don’t have one. We did add more straw throughout the winter, just to make sure all was dry.
Wow! You guys are amazing!
Thank you so much hopefaithluvfabulous!
I love hearing the guineas and great produce storage solutions. ❤️
Thank you! We know the guineas can get loud. Lol
I was looking for you to use my bucket idea with pull handles. Oh well... Ben needs the exercise.
Hi Randy, it is a great idea! We honestly didn't have time to fashion something up, and the bucket would take up too much room and not work well, because the can is much bigger than the 5 gallon buckets we have. We are looking at ways to do that next year. We have just had so much going on. We are looking at designs for next year though! Thank you so much for the idea.
@@RenewedHomestead, I was thinking you would customize your own buckets to fit in the can, as I saw Ben doing some other woodworking for the compost/dirt sifter. But I know, I don't see any time when you're not busy with three other things on your front plate.
We had every intention of building something and then ran out of time. We are hoping to for next year. Things should be a bit calmer next year. 🙂😂 Thanks for the idea!!
spring house
Thanks Martha!
Scotch-Irish rocks!
Ben agrees. 😂
Spring house? Good video. Looking forward to seeing how the new system works. God bless.
I vote "yes" for the kilt! 😂 It would probably be cooler! Oh, by the way, how many potatoes did you harvest? 🤣🤣🤣
Thank you so much stumblin_along! God bless.
Don’t give Ben any ideas! 😂 😆 😝
Loved the full + 2, great one. 🤣 It is called a spring house. even if the water comes from a ditch or creek. Hurray for the rabbits! Have fun with an animal that will survive on gleaned food sources.
FULL PLUS TWO again.
Limit the kilt to one that fits your bicep, please.
😂 😆
As a question. Can you put the metal can in a rugged plastic can to keep moisture out?
Hi Diana, we have never done that. I would almost say you would want the plastic on the inside of the can, but we always use a lot of straw or hay. Good luck!
I double dog dare you to wear a kilt on one of the next videos. It’s your culture.
Love your videos y’all.
He doesn’t have a kilt to pick up that dare, yet. 😂 😆
@@RenewedHomestead I double dog dare you to get him one.😂
😂 you really want to see him in a kilt. 😂 😝
Spring house😁
Yes! Thank you! My brain was mush. 😂
I did this DYI three winters ago-
Everything froze. My chickens enjoyed the food. I’m in zone 4. I’m sure it’s colder here.
Oh no, that stinks. I am so sorry Dianne. We are 6b, so definitely a different climate. I have heard of people in Alaska burying chest freezers to use as root cellars. The freezer insulates against the cold.
Thanks for the comment.
Will bears dig something like this up ?
Hi, we have never had them dig it up. We do have black bears around here, but they have never come down to the barn.
@@RenewedHomestead TY for replying. I only ask as I was thinking about makin similar project for an ice chest with ice blokes for a small refrigerator replacement to save on electric bill.
SPRING HOUSE
Thanks David!
I don't know where you guys are at with canning, but you can also can potatoes. Just in case you don't want to dig another hole. LOL
Thank you Andrew. Ben was talking about that. I have never canned them. Do they come out mushy?
@@RenewedHomestead I didn't follow all the 'rebel canners' advice, and my potatoes came out just like the store bought cans. YUK!
Apparently you are supposed to soak them and drain them and soak them and drain them before dry canning so they don't taste like store bought canned potatoes.
Oh wow! That must have been so disappointing! We will have to be very careful. Thank you.
@@RenewedHomestead I have never done it, but I have watched other people do it. That 1870's Homestead on CZcams has a video on it and I think Living Traditions Homestead does also. I am going to need to watch them again, because I planted an entire bed of taters that will be coming out of the ground in a few weeks.
We learned to can potatoes a few years ago. Lots of rinsing the potatoes prior to canning them. The video we watched (i don't remember who) suggested cutting them like French fries. We had some the other day ,rinsed, (again) dried (apparenty important for them to get crispy) light oil, some seasonings and into the air fryer. They were DELICIOUS. Our children had No idea that they were eating canned potatoes 🤣💞 (2 quarts fed 5 of us, plus additional dinner choices)
Pappy called it spring house..question: canning???
Yes! Thank you. My brain has been mush. We were worried that Candy would make them mushy but we’ve heard from a lot of people that if you do it the right way, that it won’t, so I think we’re going to try it. 🙏🙏🙏
What's under the kilt?
🤣 I know what Ben would say. 😂 Nothing that a good Scotch-Irishman would be ashamed to share. 😂
Hay? Straw? Everything here available was sprayed..I've been letting grass grow then cutting n feeding like that..praying for rain for Midwest n west... GOD bless
That is terrible. We search for non-sprayed. That must be frustrating. We are definitely praying for y’all. 🙏🙏🙏
Spring house.
Thank you! My brain isn’t working. 😂
@@RenewedHomestead I remembered because we had one at our cabin.
Ben has talked about creating one here. 🙂
Why do you place them in the barn?
Hi AppyEagle, to keep the rain and snow off of them. Thanks.
Pump house
Thanks Lynda! I think we were thinking of a spring house. My brain wasn’t working. 😂
Where do you live, I'm thinkin myself being in northern Wi I want to build a regular root celler but if yours work maybe.
Hi Frankieboy. We live in Western North Carolina in the Appalachian Mountains. We get plenty of cold in the winter, but nothing like you in WI. If you try it would bury the can further down, but I know that might make the reach harder.
@@RenewedHomestead I've seen ground here freeze five feet before so as nice as that would work I guess I will be building a root cellar, glad I found your channel
Thanks Frankieboy. Welcome to the homestead. We will be building one ourselves in the future.
Your root cellars reminded me of a piece of my childhood and I know you like your sci-fi!
Hope you both are going well!

'Scotch-Irish' were planted by the Stuart Kings and are the cause of the Troubles in Ireland. It is an unpleasant and continuing mess encouraged, sadly, by the established churches. I fully understand why Grandma was so indignant. Be glad that you do not.
Hi Stephanie, thanks for the comment. I know many atrocities befell both the Irish and the Scottish peoples. Some of my ancestors came over during the potato famine. When Ben and I were engaged I did some research into his family history and found that he was Scotch-Irish. Both cultures have been sorely mistreated, that is a fact, but I think we should celebrate the beautiful culture of both peoples and celebrate that ancestry and be grateful for it instead of denying part of that ancestry.
spring house
Thanks Beth! My brain is mush right now.
