I was really worried about my lower back recently, I work as a programmer and spend most of the day sitting and sadly both of my favourite sports/hobbies are rough for my lower back - jiu jitsu and voleyball. I stumbled across this video couple days ago and even tho I still feel a little bit of a discomfort (played voleyball yesterday so it's understandable) my back feel way better and I feel way more confident! i pop my lowerback decades ago on a deadlift exercise. during the first 5 mins. the pain was excruciating. i think i was 24 then. i wasnt able to walk of the pain for 5 mins, i was able to endure the pain to reach home then bed ridden for 1 whole day. i fully recover and started lifting again after 2 days of complete rest.. since then never i deadlifted so hard. now the pain goes back whenever i do deadlifts but subside after a few hours or sometimes when i overworked my lowerback. now im 35 yrs old. one evening i did a heavy single leg split squat. everything was good until the next morning, i had to sit for a long period at work. then suddenly without warning, i stood up and felt an excruciating pain on my lowerback, same ive experience 10 years ago. i had to take my leave at work and couldnt walk or stand straight for 3 days straight. on the 3rd day even at pain, i increased my physical activity like walking and carrying my baby around(yes) its still painful but its bearable. at the 4th day, i asked my wife to sit on my lower back and ive heard something popped. then from 80% pain. the pain suddenly subsided and more tolerable than before. on the 5th day i began going to work and resumed my daily activities, without pain. never want to experience this kind of pain again. and will be incorporating this exercises. thank you for the vid.

This is amazing. I've been exercising and doing yoga for 30 years with back pain. This morning I did the weighted forward fold and incorporated weighted torso twists for an hour plus.
I had moments of disassociation because I felt my back changing and it didn't seem like "my" back anymore. I would shake my legs to make sure it's real then keep stretching with weights. There were some major brain zaps when spots released that have been kinked up for years.
It was one of those workouts I'll never forget. I feel like this is the beginning of some awesome! You rock dude. You figured it out.

Four or five years ago I stopped distance swimming at the beach, bodysurfing, plus walking and running in the sand. And in the gym, I was not stretching at all. I had become frozen like the Tin Woodsman without realizing it.

You were an artist? It speaks to me because though I'm not an artist by profession, I'm afraid my bulging disc came about as a result of long hours spent honing my craft. I got really good, but now I can't squat nor deadlift anymore, and volleyball gives me a lot of pain the next morning. I'm hoping this brings results.

I am 31 years old. 3 years ago I injured myself during a deadlift (with really low weights too!). It was after the first covid lockdown and I was sitting a lot in that time. I was in good shape, but I guess I underestimated what a month of sitting can do! My height is 186cm and my weight during the injury was 81kg. Now, I am around 73kg. I have done many therapies and visited many docs, telling me I cannot change it. MRI shows my lower discs are bulged and there is no fluid between them due to compression of the discs and tight muscles around the discs. I have watched probably a few hundred youtube videos. My chiropracter told me that my SI joint is always getting blocked (mostly on the right, sometimes on the left side). He thought it could be due to weak pelvic floor muscles. My SI blockade leads to uneven leg length. My posture feels off, I have rib flare on the left, and my shoulders feel uneven, breathing in deep feels weird. Lower back muscles are always stiff, since 3 years, even if i get them losened up, next day, they are stiff again. My ribcage feels out of position. I am doing the exercises from your vid since 3 days and will see how it goes. Thanks for the glimmer of hope! I will give it my all.
PS: I also have issues with my bowel (emptying disorder) since 15 years. No idea if this can have any impact on my back pain.
I loved my life and I wish to love it again.
    Greetings from Germany

I recommend olives for too fast and lemon juice for too slow digestion. For the back I know almost the same situation. Still in pain but training core muscles seems to be the key. Also too much sitting and stress makes the hip flexors pull on the lower spine. Relaxing the muscles from the brain seems to be the key. Like a stressed mind keeps those muscles tight. Positive vibes relax those muscles. Practice being in a positive state of mind to keep those hip flexors relaxed.

@@Bkbond After training core for almost a month, the pain didn't improve. I am currently making a longer trip in south east asia and decided to visit a Chiropractor in Kuala Lumpur. He told me things, none of my docs/therapists back home in Germany told me. Apparently, my root issue was SI dysfunction and it was inflammed (bulged discs where just one of the consequences). He manipulated my SI and told me to do nothing for 2 weeks. Walking only and he also showed me how to sit correctly. Also he recommended cooling the area 1-2 a day. I visited him multiple times and when my SI was off, he fixed it. Not sure if inflammation and ligaments can heal properly if the SI joint is blocked. For me it was insane that none of my docs found out about the inflammation and told me to make exercises which made my condition worse and send me to physiotherapy. He told me, you cannot find the inflammation of the nerves in the blood (no idea, if thats accurate). Thats why my blood tests didnt show any inflammation. Wished my docs told me that? Anyway, 2 weeks have passed and I do feel big improvements. I am allowed to do some exercises again, but I mustnt do exercises which causes my SI to work hard and twist, also avoid pelvis rotation until full recovery (could take months). I also found videos afterwards which describe similar methods for SI dysfunction + bulged discs:
      1. Simple Solutions to Sacroiliac SI Joint Pain
      2. 7 Mistakes to AVOID with Bulging Discs (Don't Delay Your Recovery!)
Hope this might help anyone out there. Struggle is real.
I will def. will be doing the core exercises, once the inflammation and the ligaments are further in recovery.

@@LM-ss5od Since I am travelling at the moment, it is not easy to recover. My priority is to heal the ligaments of the SI joint. I think the inflammation is still there, so when I do too much, pain increases again. I try to cool the area, eat anti inflammatory food, simple walking. And strengthen muscles around the Hip, without pressuring SI joint too hard. I think I need manipulation again, which sucks due to travelling. How is your state?

New to your channel. I discovered that dead lifts and loaded squats made my back pain flare up like a firework. I took those off of the menu and it has made a huge difference. I recommend not doing those two exercises ever, if you have low back pain. I use machines like the leg extension, leg press, etc because it loads just my legs and not my back.

Hi Lee. Stumbled across your website a week ago. I have had chronic back and knee pain for over 25 years now after smashing my patella once in a MV accident and again 6 months later doing squats when try to rebuild. Have tried everything mate. I am seeing a CHEK trainer who follows McGills theories on the back. This guy advises against the Jeffersen Curl. Thoughts?
And would your training be suitable for someone like me? I have been unable to regain the the mass and strength back in my glutes. My thoracic and cervical is really bad too. I am 57. I can't sleep. Jason

    • @LeeWeiland
      @LeeWeiland  Před rokem

      1. mcgill? don't know him. find people who have strength/skill at high level in old age to emulate.
      2. get mri and see if surgery is necessary....if not then it's slow and steady.
      3. J curl / body rolls are a staple. avoidance of movement causes problems in long run.
      4. don't overanalyze.

@@LeeWeiland Thanks for your reply Lee. I know you are busy. Appreciate your time. Car accident in 1995. Have had L4/L5 fusion in 2014 due to deteriorating disc. NO IMPROVEMENT. Since then have had many MRI'S. Latest 6 months ago. Have mild disc bulge and severe bilateral foraminal stenosis with nerve root impingement in C4,5,6 and disc osteophyte complex in C6,7. Multilevel disc osteophyte complex at T5/6 to T12,/1. At L4/5 Bony spurring with mild bilateral foraminal stenosis with no nerve impingement. At L5/S1 no disc herniation but mild foraminal stenosis with no nerve impingement. At L/5/S1 there is mild bilateral foraminal stenosis from facet arthrosis, severe on the right. I am very flexible through hamstrings, tight through hips in cross leg position and good flexibility through thoracic but have a big knot from T5- T12. When i do 'bridge' i have a massive restriction knot in mid thoracic. Neck is horrible. Is it worth trying your stuff mate? I am 72 kg and 5 7'. Relatively strong and not overweight but have numerous weak spots due to above. Live in Sydney, Australia. I am desperate. Any help appreciated. I appreciate you are not a miracle worker.
