  • In this episode of TFBTV's #GunFest2021 coverage, James Reeves speaks with Steiner about their new optics for 2021, including the video-game like CQT, a thermal and RDS combine dinto one (ten thousand dollar) package.
    According to Steiner on the CQT:
    "The Close Quarters thermal is a see-through thermal sight with Clear View Thermal technology that overlays onto a direct view of the real world. Designed for soldiers to use in close quarters combat, the CQT™ with CVT™ is the next gen for predator hunters. See hogs and coyotes in full dark conditions. Thermal to identify; red dot to target. The rugged anodized housing can withstand any kind of hunt in all weather conditions."
    We also discuss the Cinder, a more hunting-oriented thermal optic.

      @Rob Hunter It doesn't matter how much the product costs, it matters how much money they get out of the deal. It just so happens that the more expensive firearms are also the ones who pay the most; and that's because they rely so heavily on advertising to get them sold. The odds of you running into one in the wild is rare. Where as kel-tek, they are very common everyone does videos on them and you probably know at least one friend that owns one. So they don't need to advertise as much, so they end up paying less.... but what the hell do I know, I just made all that up.

    I remember being bored in the armory. I picked up a thermal scope for the 240B. It said on the side of the battery pack, “use ONLY lithium batteries.” Me being the overachiever private that I was, found 12 AA alkaline batteries to put in it.
    It turned on and I could watch the battery indicator go from completely full to completely empty in under a minute.

    • @SuperOpinion8ed
      @SuperOpinion8ed Před rokem +7

      It probably didn't go to empty. Lithium tends to hold the nearly full voltage and then just die. Alkaline batteries tend to fade off like a dimming incandescent light. The problem is a lot of LED technostuff uses transistors with cutoff voltages. The transistor is basically a switch or a pressure valve. If it has a 3.3V threshold, for example, and your lithium batteries are holding 3.5 for a while but your alkaline start at 3.5 and drop to 3.2, well, that transistor doesn't let the current flow. You could take those same batteries and use them for a while in a regular flashlight. But anything with this transistor model wouldn't come on becausee 3.2 < 3.3 required. Interestingly, I use rechargeable AA in my Blink home cameras. From the word go they show low battery. But they still work. Eventually they'll be below the threshold voltage and then I'll just recharge them. I guess the Blink knows that if lithium is basically anything less than optimal, it must be "low battery" but in fact these rechargeable batteries still have plenty of mAmp-hours in them. That said, anything that projects light or creates heat will suck up the juice.

    • @DieselRamcharger
      @DieselRamcharger Před rokem

      lithium is 3.3v per cell AA's are 1.5v per cell. so you were only ever at 50% charge so to speak from the very get. Which was JUUUUSSSSTTTT enough to light it up, as you experienced.

      Welcome to computers. And phones. My first horrible computer was over $1000. 128KB ram. That's "K", not "M", and surely not "G". Phone calls were 25c/min for long distance. You bought cell minutes in 100 minute lots (when cell phones became affordable). My understanding is that a big expense in a lot of thermal is the germanium glass. Tech gets cheap quickly. They say our iphones (even gen 1) was more powerful than the computers on the space shuttle. So the tech (electronics) in these optics isn't the expense. It's the lens, and maybe the initial R&D. Remember, the cost of an item on the market also pays for the ones that never made it to market.

    I see a lot of folks saying how they can't afford this stuff. Guys, as cool as all this shit is, if it doesn't fit into your mission, don't waste your money. I mean, whoo hoo, it's a fancy optic that has thermal vision. It's not something that you absolutely, positively *NEED,* unless you have a specific purpose for it. So don't sweat it, or put yourself into debt just to have some fancy range toy you're going to use maybe twice before you realize "shit, I could've bought more ammo with the amount of money I spent on this bitch."
    Besides, if you gotta ask how much this shit cost, you can't afford it in the first place. YOU KNOW I'M RIGHT.

    How is the hud in the red dot going to show up against day light? Bright reflections off snow? Really cool tech, I’m surprised it took so long to see this idea come to market. Even my goofy ass thought of something similar to this years ago, just didn’t have the time, money, or skills to make it. Still glad to see someone did. Hopefully the cost comes down too.

      DARPA had a guided .50 that used pezo actuators to steer. If you start seeing a lot of little drones on the commercial market using those actuators to move around, then that's them making a justification for mass producing the actuators which need mass production and economies of scale to be cheap enough to shoot into your enemies.

    So, as basic dot sights and LPVOs become cheaper and more prolific, sights like these, and other offerings like have integrated rangefinding and ballistic computers are going to slide into the high-cost/high-quality niche that was once the realm of Aimpoint, EOtech, and the many high-end LPVOs of the past decade.
