Scandinavian Airlines Flight 751 was a regularly scheduled Scandinavian Airlines passenger flight from Stockholm, Sweden, to Warsaw, Poland, via Copenhagen, Denmark. The McDonnell Douglas MD-81, registration OY-KHO, was piloted by Danish captain Stefan G. Rasmussen (44) and Swedish first officer Ulf Cedermark (34). On 27 December 1991, ice had collected on the wings' inner roots (close to the fuselage) before takeoff. It broke off and was ingested into the engines as the aircraft became airborne on takeoff. After both engines failed, the pilots were forced to make an emergency landing in a field near Gottröra, Sweden. All 129 passengers and crew aboard survived.

you land a commercial airliner with over 130 people onboard in the woods with no engines and no one gets killed, you should get a medal for that. Interesting story
Rasmussen was decorated by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark for his outstanding and professional performance. He received several recognitions, such as: IFALPA Polaris Award, IAPA Outstanding Service Award, Aviation Week & Space Technology Laurels Award and Hall of Fame recognition and The Golden Medal from King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.
A medal? You mean PART OWNERSHIP IN THE COMPANY for that miracle!
Absolutely. Incredible piloting skills!!
Seriously. Mad flying skills. Bravo sirs, totally understand quitting while you're ahead and on top.
Medal?? I think he should be the guest at each survivor's household for free dinners for life.
This flight has been studied for decades by other pilots. It's considered an almost textbook example of how to save your plane and passengers when you've lost your engines and are over land. This pilot was incredible.
Dont forget the other two!
It’s a shame the captain was too traumatised to fly again. After such heroic actions by both him and the other 2 members of the crew.
Rasmussen was a member of the Danish Folketing parliament for the Conservative People's Party from 1994 to 1996. Today he is a lecturer and author.
he lost his fait when they blame him to start with later they cleared him but to late he was a broken man im Danish and i feel sorry for him
Yeah they blamed the three that saved everyone but destroyed a multi million dollar plane. Pffft.
honestly, I don't blame him.
@Katie Giles Exactly, you lose an engine, or suffer a catastrophic failure, its no longer your plane, it is now the insurance company's, you need to do what you can to save the passengers.
This is a case where a plane failed the pilots (as well as their own airline), and yet, all survived because these pilots did EVERYTHING right when it all went wrong.
NihongoGuy I can’t understand why SAS didn’t train the pilots on the new system.
The plane wasnt at fault, there was ice on the wings when there shouldn't have been
The airline failed the pilots not the plane. They installed the system to override their commands without telling them (why???) and they allowed the ice to remain on the wing before takeoff.
This is largely on McDonnell Douglas. They didn't tell SAS of this system.
Scandinavian countries should know how to deal with airplane icing issues....
4:57: Everyone on board survives. I can't believe it. There is no adjective that can describe this event. Just unbelievable.
Robert Hagedorn I think the Swedes have that can do anything well routine even while making an emergency landing.
You just described it lol
Robert Hagedorn miracle is the right Word.
God was with them even if you don't believe somebody prayed
@@scoobycarr5558 , as someone who is half Swedish, I sort of agree with you.
All 3 of those pilots deserve every award that can be handed out. That's the kind of accident where half or more of the passengers die. But nobody did- a true miracle, as it is known. Nice vid, Allec... :)
John Sauerbrun And sully?
Rasmussen was decorated by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark for his outstanding and professional performance. He received several recognitions, such as: IFALPA Polaris Award, IAPA Outstanding Service Award, Aviation Week & Space Technology Laurels Award and Hall of Fame recognition and The Golden Medal from King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.
Well the fuselage was cold if it crashed in a warmer climate then who knows what could happen
John Sauerbrun
Indeed, the native Swedes are a seriously competent people.
Søren
Thank you for the clarification.
No one died?? HOLY CRAP. Big props out to the pilots for keeping their composure and keeping everyone alive
mikere555 ... pun intended? 🦆
@mikere555 that's a miracle no one died on that flight. 17 years later another miracle landing occurred. US Airways with captain Sully landed on the Hudson River. All survived and Sully was awarded for heroism.
@@ramonalvarez8559 this true story
So sad that the captain was too traumatized to fly.
Did you know that there was a man on this flight that just minutes after the crash ran to a nearby freeway, stopped a taxi and went back to the airport and booked a new flight the very same day to Warszawa, the newspapers asked the man why and his reponse was: had an important business meeting to get to :)
who could blame him for being too traumatized to fly again?
The airline's fault
> Camera zooming on the fuselage which fell into three pieces
Me: "Damn, that's probably one of those where everybody died(("
> "Everyone on board survives"
Me: *HOLY SHIT*
All my respect goes to the captain Rasmussen. I saw a lot of times this accident on TV and I think that Stefan and Ulf are the best pilots and two big heroes.
Good video! Good job, Allec!
it is so great when nobody dies in a plane crash!!! a real miracle and great pilots !!
The benefits of working as a team including the third player, the passenger captain, who was able to get the F/O’s displays working again. These people are special, my highest respect to the profession and these three individuals in particular.
Everyone survives despite the state of the fuselage! Wow!
amazing
you are not going to see that kind of simulation in a video game any time soon ^^
MrGreatplum The tragic loss was the plane so this is how we get this music
MrGreatplum .its lovely
The fact that the aircraft split into 3 pieces and everyone survived shows something about the pilots, they were great!
I can't believe everyone survived. The pilots really did a good job.
Im trying to become a commercial pilot and im recently searching all accidents related to aviation whether they are human error or mechanical so i can expand my knowledge and be prepared when an incident comes my way. I have to say your videos and attention to detail is spectacular. Keep the amazing work
It has always been said that any landing you can walk away from is a good landing.
And it has been said that any landing where your body is identifiable is a good landing.
@@MrTruckerf naw nobody says that. however the landing where you can walk away from is very true.
@@Maplelust Of course the second part of the saying being that any landing where you can reuse the plane is a great landing. So in this case, good but not great.
"We are in a field now" is a pretty cool-under-pressure thing to transmit just before crashing. Maybe even better than "We're going to end up in the Hudson."
Garrett O'Donnell No. Sully said, “We’re gonna be in the Hudson.”
Like John Candy once said: "This is car 55. Uhm, we're in a truck..."
@@megamillionfreak I think that he said both things in different comunications, but not sure about that.
Thats amazing.... Those Scandinavians are made of some other kind of material or something...
Scwirul That can do anything well routine for one thing. Their Volvos can be as tough as nails on America's rough roads.
Scwirul yeah, ice
Yes, we are.
Ve vass Vikings, remembair?
I'm sure they were scared shitless, but held it together. The captain never flew again, don't blame him.
Great video as always better than watching those 40 minute documentaries when I can watch something under 10 mins.
These pilots are the best. These people landed a plane, WITHOUT ENGINES! Only Sully and LOT flight can compare to this. Good job pilots, you prevented a crash!
LOT?? what flight was that
Matthew Neathery the LOT that crashlanded safely with it's wheels up. But I'd replace Sully with the Sioux City DC-10 landing or the DHL that was shot in the wing. Sully wasn't that amazing really
British Airways Flight 9, Eastern Airlines Flight 855, Air Canada Flight 143 (Gimli Glider)...
+Urho The Human TACA airlines landing was amazing too
Tash Kay TACA 110 sucked in ice too, hail to be exact. He landed it next to a NASA plant! They put new engines on and flew it back to MSY a week later.
This truly was a miracle. Although the crew had a big hand in that. And while I am sorry to see an obviously great pilot end his career because of this traumatizing event, I am glad he lived. I'm glad they all lived. Well done.
Congratulations to the Captain for the rough but miraculous landing! Hope his remaining days were blessed and happy. Thankful Captain Holmberg was there to help, too.
gomphrena
Exactly..Holmberg was also instrumental. Great job by all involved.
Last I heard about Captain Rasmussen (a few years ago), he worked as a bus driver and enjoyed that life, tho considering hes past 70 now, hes probably retired at this point. So even tho he had to give up flying, coz he just couldnt trust his plane anymore, he still found a way to happily serve his passengers.
Great flying Captain! Sad to hear he didnt return to flying, some people deal with things their own way and he had his reasons, shame to lose such a good pilot.
Incredible!
I hope that all of the injured, fully recovered, and that the aircrew received commendations.
Good job guys!
It was a big relief when I read that everyone survived. A real Blessings to the pilots!
The time when the plane crash... i hold my breath and saying “please everyone onboard survive”
And it does! I let out my breath and saying “thank god”
Thats just false my dude
Random Guy...thank who? Never heard of em....
Branon Fontaine
I bet your one of those "atheists" who are actually of ashkanazi descent. Your god is lucifer.
Everyone survives - It's a miracle! Praise God!
Half the people survive - It's a miracle that people survived - Praise God!
Everyone dies - God moves in mysterious ways - Praise God!
If there really was a God, maybe the plane wouldn't have crashed in the first place and injured people.
Berno Inferno
Nice try demon. Your mockery against God only gets you mocked back in return. Hahahaaa.
I love happy endings :)

I find myself WILLING these situations to work out safely as I watch them
unfold.
@ItzLincoln A lullaby played at the end of the video. Wow.
Poor Captain, I feel so bad that he could not fly again... and after they managed to make the best out of that terrible situation, and kept everyone ALIVE. Great job crew!
Thanks for making such a great video.
I just like the MD-80, is just beautiful
Except having the engines behind the wings is why they copped the ice
Seems like an obvious design flaw, wonder why the aero engineers didn't anticipate in cold climates that this was a serious risk.
Not sure there are any commercial planes that have engines positioned on the tail now.
Agreed!
Everyone survived? WOW. I thought for sure, with such a hard landing/impact....
But 25 passengers are ibjured
And 2 passengers vers seriosly injured
Thank you so much Allec I really want to watch this non-stop
Trees, if they're not too big, can be a good thing to slow the plane. Big trees no. So happy that everyone survived!
True, of course trees can raise havoc with the landing gear and undercarriage, but if small trees can crush down on contact, they do provide slowing down capabilities! You just hope like hell the aircraft doesn't nose down and flip over or cartwheel! Any landing off the runway that you can walk away from is a successful landing, albeit, you may cause a million dollars worth of damage to the airliner (which can be replaced; lives cannot be replaced,) so you're still ahead of the game!
john harris Thank Sweden for small trees!
No lives lost with a crippled plane. Amazing job by both pilots. They did everything to save lives and they succeeded
And no deaths...that's a blessing!
What a crew. Nice job Allec your doing amazing.
Stefan Rasmussen is my hero i really am looking up to him!
and no regards towards his co-pilot cedermark?? alright ...
It snapped into 3 parts, everyone survives, wow that’s amazing. Nice video Allec.
Awesome work by the pilot!! Thanks for the video Allec.
Wow. Amazing pilots. I've watched several channels like yours but I like that you add in real videos of the accidents when possible. The simulations don't feel real without them. Good work.
That was incredible. At 1,000 ft with no APU, two dead engines, and a thicket of city and trees I was wondering if anyone was going to survive the landing.
Thank you to the flight crew who saved everyone.
Thanks for this upload!! I am from Stockholm, Sweden, I know Arlanda quite well and SAS is my childhood airline.
remarkable story and outcome. really great video - thank you so much!
Great landing captain!
Thanks for this channel! Excellent work and seems so realistic, although they are terrible tragedies. You put a lot of work into making these videos and I just want to say thank you. Very interesting and so addicting to watch.
Another one where everyone survives. Bravo
ABSOLUTE HEROISM
Stefan Rasmussen is a damn hero
What a good crew which did their job professional + knowing the aircraft would stall performing a turn, saved everybody on board their life. The crew should be honored.
Great story and three amazing pilots. The Captain should return to flying, because he did an amazing job. The pilots did a fantastic job.
I used to work at a busy regional airport located at 7,000 feet elevation. We did plenty of deicings. After you have deiced the aircraft, the driver of the truck must get out and do a "tactile check" for ice on the leading edge of the wing as far back as he can reach. We did this on CRJ's only. (similar to the plane in this video) Obviously larger planes cannot be checked in this manner.
Point being, this check would have not caught the ice as described in this video... so even today this same accident could occur.
We always sprayed the snot out of the planes just to be safe. Also, there is not just de-icing fluid (heated, orange) but anti-icing fluids (cold, green) as well. It is up to the pilots if they want a "full bath" or not. I have no clue how things were run in northern Europe 26 years ago.
Several more MD-80s had engine damage due to clear ice ingestion after this accident. After that, small tufts were installed on top of the wing in the area that was susceptible to icing. Even in warm weather, somebody would have to reach and touch the tufts to make sure they were free of ice before each flight. Also, McD-D designed and made available electric heaters that could be permanently installed on top of the wings to keep ice off. Not many airlines went for the option.
The reason the ice was so difficult to predict or detect was that the ice was forming in flight due to cold fuel in the center fuel tanks, not because of impact icing which causes icing of leading edges. The area of accumulation was quite difficult to view from the ground. Even from the deice bucket, which gave a clear view of the top of the wing, the clear ice was effectively invisible. Impact icing is usually milky looking, so this clear ice was a surprise. The DC-9 and Md-80s were good airplanes. The reason the MD-80 had icing problems not seen on the DC-9 was that the center wing fuel tanks on the MD-80 extended out into the wings far enough to chill the wing surface and cause icing in relatively warm weather. And yes, the pilots did a great job in this accident. The automatic system that added power was actually called ART, for Automatic Reserve Thrust, not ATR.
Cool. You seem to know your facts. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Mr.Clem that is what killed the Dutch Aircraft FOOKER 100, And others. Why, ? It had a “WET’ wing,so was very bad with ICING sometimes after landing, moisture collected/froze in the wings, zero lift. Must be de iced., some never saw the ‘Ice’, and the rest is history.
Leighton Samms reminds me of air Ontario’s f28 crash
Interesting info! Thanks for enlightening us about the de-icing fluid, something I didn't know to that degree!
CPT Rasmussen is a hero . . .
That was one landing...
Great work by the pilots!! Indeed a miracle. Great video!!
Excellent piloting.
great observation
I always watch your videos. They are super fantastic and very informative! Great job!
I cannot express the delight that I feel when I click onto an air disaster video and see the words “all _____ passengers and crew members survived.”
F*CK YEAH.
Honestly the pilots were amazing there. They did everything right and managed to save everyone, a similar incident with even one pilot switched may have likely resulted in deaths. They did flawless. Tho the de-icing system clearly needs to be improved somehow. The problem is de-icing is hard to get perfect even 10% of the time so it’s really just a problem of planes existing and having to fly there. Sadly you can’t just not fly in cold areas so it’s the harsh reality of it, just do the best to insure nothing bad will happen. It seems like they did that here too, the best to their ability at the time. Tho i’m gonna set a huge amount of blame, possibly 90% of it, to the people who forced new regulations that made the plane ignore the pilots skills and force the engines to work faster even when the pilots want it to go slower. That is fucking disgusting of them to do, you could at least have had the courtesy to tell pilots that you changed how their engines work so that they can know that when incident like this happens that it’s because the company fucked them over. Like why not instead of adding a system where the engines go faster even when they should be going slower to bot crash a plane you add a system where the piolets gain full control whenever the engines are having a problem. That way they can try even harder to save the plane. Seriously if I was a pilot I would never work for them knowing they would ruin something like that without even having the heart to tell any of their pilots. Disgraceful.
PikaBlu22 the BA
The FOOKER 100 series uSually had problems, in tha they had ‘WET WINGS’, and so were sussectable to ICING on its wings, just like the CLEAR ICE on that SAS flight happened, you have to REALLY look, so this factor took out many FOKKER aircraft. They are no longer made ( NETHERLANDS )
PikaBlu22 cf
amazing, so pleased there were no serious casualties
Not correct. There were life-changing injuries !
Amazing polo.everyone survived
Finally! 1 with a happy ending :D Thank God & thank you for making this great video!
You do not add a new system to a plane and not tell the flight crews! Not the first time doing that has led to an accident.
You can't restart after you use the extinguisher. Great job by the Captain to get the plane on the ground with no fatalities.
Thanks again Allec.
Flight training and experienced crew saved the lives of all aboard.
loved the piano soundtrack. i take bathes to it. amazing that the plane is still in service!
Man, i get goosebumps every time when the sad music comes on
Kudos to the crew. They did a great job given the circumstances.
Absolutely heroic. What a job guiding it down in the perfect spot to land. Like finding the needle in the haystack. Incredible job by those pilots.
Stefan Rasmussen is still here 27 years later a national hero in Denmark (I am danish myself). Some years later he was elected for the danish parliament. Sadly he had to leave his post in the parliament due to severe tinnitus inflicted on him as a consequense of the crash landing with SK 751 in 1991.
Awesome. Everyone survived! 😊
Thank God everyone survived!
This is even more amazing than the miracle on the Hudson.
The pilots did the right thing in not attempting a Suicide Turn, but from the simulation it looked like there was a lake or river off to the left. Would it have been prudent to ease the aircraft in that direction and line up for a ditching if they couldn't get an engine restarted, rather than come down in a forest clearing?
That no one was killed is truly a miracle.
Amen!!! It was a "miracle"!!!
Wow Allec you got a lot of effort on this
badass pilots
Holy S miracle on.the hudson? This IS A MIRACLE!!!
Good work Allec.
Amazing pilot..
Classic management oversight by the airline: Let's add this new feature to our planes but don't tell the pilots.
Nice job Allec.
This seriously is a miracle
Truly a miracle that anyone let alone everyone survived this crash, the there pilot's professionalism and team work saved their lives and everyone else's lives that day, I sincerely hope their skills were recognised.
Wonderful miracle and amazing flying skills. Also, fully loaded with fuel and no fire! This one needs to be a movie.
Thank goodness everybody survive
amazing !
Amazing, amazing landing. Those pilots are heros. A video with a not too horrible ending
I've never seen a large aircraft that broken up and no fatalities. Amazing, amazing! Thank you God!
Now those are some awesome pilots!
Just wow, miracle landing O__o
Loved it Brother
@Nithish Praveen How about the lullaby that played at the end?
How so many people could survive that terrible crash? Only a miracle could save their lives. Incredible, simply amazing !!!
I hope somebody gave those guys a pat on the back.
Just watched this from Dailymotion. Then you uploaded this!
Outstanding. Thank God.
The aircrew did an incredible job!
I am sorry that it ended the way that it did for them.
Wow! Everyone survived! I am amazed!
