For thoses who don't know, Marina Viotti, the famous lyric singer during the song, was also in a metal band back in 2010 !
It reminds me of an old band who covered sepultura inquisition symphony back in the day and they did opera version of roots bloody roots it was wild in 2002 hearing that forgot the band. Yes Gojira blew it away the entire world is talking about them

I can give an absolute flying f@&k about the olympics, it’s the Oscar’s of activities for countries. “You’re the best and have spent the most time and money” but it was an absolute breath of fresh air to see a metal band on a global stage crush it all.
You left out that the Olympics is a bunch of dopers and politicized judges in half the sports. Might as well watch WWE.

This epic performance was not only a reenactment of the French Revolution but also a a tribute to the victim of the terrorist attack in Bataclan which targeted the Eagles of Death metal concert.
The boat on which the opera singer stands is the boat on the coat of arms of the capital, whose latin motto is "fluctuat neg megritur" (it floats, but it does not sink). Hence the fact that the performance represented liberty (against the tyranny of artistocracy and opressive zealots).
As a metalhead discovering this precious gem during Olympics opening ceremony wss the best thing happened to me in months. They encapsulated modern French history so damn well that this track has become the unofficial national anthem of France in my mind.
Ah! Ca ira was the unofficial anthem during the revolution in 1790.
The author of the original words "Ah! ca ira, ca ira, ca ira" was a former soldier named Ladré who made a living as a street singer. The music is a popular contredanse air called "Le carillon national", and was composed by Bécourt, a violinist of the Theatre Beaujolais. Queen Marie Antoinette herself is said to have often played the music on her harpsichord.
Check out the sans-culotte version too. It uses several much more aggressive stanzas, calling for the lynching of the nobility and the clergy.

Gojira was amazing! Best part of the opening ceremony. It almost sounded like they started with "Stranded" - like at the 1 minute mark when the verse starts, but it was all instrumental - then morphed into "Ah Ca Ira" with the opera singer.
The Olympics was all downhill after this. This was so badass.

Always been a metal fan since I was a kid. I'd heard of Gojira for a long time but never really bothered to check them out until a few years ago, and man I am so glad I did. They may be the best mstal band of the modern era.

Ça ira is literally it will be fine. Les Aristocrates à la lanterne is the part where they say they will be sent to the lantern, later verse of which they explain that is where they'll be hanged.
