Your song is spot on.It's often almost impossible to find the bus because half the bays aren't at the bus station and if you don't know which bus goes where you're stuffed because there are no staff to consult. Greyfriars might have been dark but your bus had a bay and you knew where you were going and how to get there
They should've built the bus station on Greyfriars where the old bus station was. The new bus station is in a cramped location. The old bus station was connected to the Subway network & to the Grosvenor centre via a bridge. With the new bus station, to access the subway network you have to go over a pedestrian crossing, & pedestrian crossings in Northampton are terrible. They take ages to change.
I thought that the system of Greyfriars worked incredibly well. I loved the design of the building too, I'm a fan of brutalist architecture. What didn't work too well, as is the case with many buildings in this style, is the impact the stark, underground-like bunker conditions have upon the psyche of people. Greyfriars earned a reputation as being grotty, but that's only because the council didn't maintain the building. I remember the place only a few years after it opened and it was alright back then (bit dark, but hey.). The tunnels and bridges provided neat access solutions, but the issue of Subways being crime magnets took away their desirability. I really do think that Northampton had one of the best bus stations in the country, in terms of function. I'm sort of glad that the new bus station has been a bit of a disaster, just for how much it highlights that Greyfriars operated perfectly and that the desire for daylight and aesthetics overshadowed the greater need for a bus station which fulfils its duty well.
@@jenniferbrown8763 It's an interesting study on the way in which architecture influences behaviour. Even in the 80's, when I most remember the building, it had loutish goings on. Punks, drunks and whatnot misbehaving. It's the curse of Brutalism, something about the style just encourages crime and antisocialism. The lessons learnt, from this period of 60's and 70's concrete behemoths, seems to have driven today's design of public buildings in the exact opposite direction. Maybe for the better, in those respects. But there are overlooked benefits of the highly efficient functionality in buildings like Greyfriars. I'm an outsider to Northampton, I've never lived or stayed there, but I am no stranger to the town. And I was disappointed to learn of the demise of the old bus station. Maybe I'd have been wrong but, given the power, I'd have backed its complete renovation and tried to make good the failings. Even if others don't, I feel that Northampton lost something very significant when Greyfriars met its fate.
I transfered from stagecoach Peterbrough to northampton in 2007 and greyfriars in my opinion should not have been demolished. They should have just repaired the roof cleaned up all the brickwork put better lighting In and it would have been OK.

I think this was a massive mistake, when the new bus station first opened in 2014 my late Nan who died in February 2015 missed her doctors appointment because of the delays the new bus station caused and it still causes issues. The new bus station contributed to the downfall of the Grosvenor Centre because, it's location moved outside the Grosvenor Centre and not enough bays for the Buses. Internet shopping and high rental prices on retail property it's the main blame for the high street in the UK. The old building people say looked ugly, I did not think it looked ugly a building is a building to me, I admit it needed painting, some structural work and better lighting inside, but it worked with the traffic of buses.
We were told a new bus station would be built on the greyfriars site but still nothing. The current bus station is nowhere near adequate. This council is rotten.
Northamptonshire Council's passenger transport planning abilities are about as good as their financial management skills. Given the Authority's current financial position, it was probably designed to a budget rather than a service.
Actually, it's main aim was to bring people into the town centre, because as you can see it's dying. I guess it worked a little bit. Problem is locals love to whizz off in their cars to shopping outlets and MK.
@FrancisXGomes no i'm Not. They said that Was the reason. The reason the City Centre is dying is due to Shopping habites changing. People like to drive to New fancy retail parks. Or MK. Dirext from the car to the Shop . People eat in their cars. Drink Coffee in their cars. Plus a lot more people ordering online. Of course, sainsburys would have löst out on the New Bus Station locstion. But a lot more people on drapery nowadays. But i think people are now more likely to leave the house and spend money in restauraunt or Coffee Shops for a nice experince out, that's the current Trend. People have Amazon and Asos for other things. I dont disagree with the choice to move the Bus Station. But more should be done for car parking etc to modernise the way people experience the City Centre. But its Hard, cant promise that people still wont just Pop off to MILTON Keynes. Lets See what happens. I Heard they had Plans for the market square. First the people abnonded the town Centre, then the businesses. Mk and other retail parks Are literally sucking the life out of ntown Centre.
i was mugged at the old Greyfriars bus station - glad its gone (new bus station is closer to town / market square and central). Unfortunately buses are a dying breed (not like the 1960's and 1970's when virtually everyone rode the bus and there were very few cars).
Designed, planned and built by people who don't travel on buses.
The Bus Station was actually projected and built by Arup

rather hold it in than pay to use the loo.
Just get a bike, simples.

Or an scooter nowadays u can rent them (though there a right pain in the ass for footpath users)
@@46harry Why, because most people are too fat and bloody lazy to get off their ass and ride a bike to work instead of sit in an empty bus.
