  • Refurbishing A Model Traction Engine - Part #1 - Until 5 years before the date of this video, I owned this Traction Engine but I had to sell it owing to my poor financial circumstances at the time. But now I have managed to buy it back from my friend to whom I sold it, but it is a bit of a sorry state now and needs some T.L.C.
    Here is part #1 the story of the refurbishment..............................

    Several years a bookstore in Dallas, Texas sold a magazine called "Old Glory". That is one name for the American Flag. The British magazine however was about showmen's waggons. I loved to read about them. Sadly we read very few magazines nowadays. That bookstore is gone. Thanks for the video.

    What a glorious piece of machinery I can hear all my heroes Stevenson, watt, Brunel all applauding. My dad got me a mechano set when I was young and the mechano sets were real and watching this model brings back a lot of great modell building memories. Thanks Keith

    I'm currently building a 1/12 traction engine and I can appreciate the effort and skill required to complete one, been at it for a year now and have just started work on the motion. Looking forward to the series.

    Beautiful engine. I remember it from previous videos. All the complications and components are well done and really add to the overall engine. The lining is what makes it very special and really adds to the beauty.

    That is quite a work of art! Thanks to you I seem to come down with a bit of a steam bug.... I just received some 6" duplex steam pump castings from Blackgates Engineering. They are very nice indeed, but where to start? There seems to be a very steep learning curve at first, but should be great fun.

    Excellent photography too. I especially liked the panning shots from above without the canopy. - Also wondering how you might make those twisty brass support columns(?) that hold up the canopy? Are they square stock that is heated 'til soft, then twisted? Thanks.

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  Před 5 lety

      Yes John, that is how you make them - heat and twist, it is quite a skill.

    Very nice engine. On the topic of removing grime, I find YES washing up liquid to be effective. It cuts through oil and grime very well and I use it to clean my Wilesco engines. Fairly inexpensive and I can wash up my dishes with it too.

    On my 3 inch burrell traction engine the smoke box door got knocked and bent so we machine it mut there is still a bit of a gap would putting grease in between the seal work?

    • @keithappleton

      the grease would just melt when it was in steam ......

    Very nice work, you are truly a Craftsman. When my eye sight was good I did such machine work. Now I only appreciate it. I'm afraid it to be a fadding art. Oh and love the humor.

Chap behind me has a sit on traction engine, based on one of the Invicta's, hear it peeping and clanking some weekends and I go and be nosey til he gets fed up and chases me off with a broom hehe

      oddly enough, I used 666 because I own a recording studio that over the years has recorded a lot of extreme Black & Doom Metal. I was surprised recently when I watched the old film called "The Iron Maiden" which features the traction engine that this one is a model of, that it also had "666" in the registration plate - a total coincidence as I have never seen the film before. }:-)))

      @@keithappleton do you know I spent years at many a steam rally trying to find her, and I finally did at Dorset a couple of shows ago, did you know she was once called "The Kitchener"? It's a beautiful engine up close! Well worth the time I spent searching for her! 🤘😎🤘
