  • Refurbishing A Model Traction Engine - Part #2 - The BIG Cleanup begins. The engine was filthy ...... After I sold the engine, it had been kept for 5 years in a dusty environment and to make matters worse it was then stored in a damp cellar and that had also taken its toll on the condition of the engine. But I will get it back into the same condition that it was in when I sold it (maybe even better) with a bit of work - the process starts here..............................

Strangely, MUCH more satisfying than a painting episode!
Only thing missing I felt was some before & after shots at the end.... ;)
    Thank you again :D

I like the animation Charlotte did for the intro and exit. Many years back a friend of mine built a radio controlled model boat on his dinning room table while his wife was away for the summer. The week before his wife was to come back he phoned me and asked if I could come with my truck and give him a hand. He had put a couple of blankets on the table before he started, but various solvents glue and spots where he had gouged and drilled through were visible. He asked me if the table was salvageable and I said it's not the table he had to worry about it's his life and marriage that was in jeopardy. We found a furniture store that had an identical table set, which he bought (I think I could have bought a good used Bridgeport for what he payed) and we brought it to his place in my truck. We took the old table and chairs and put them in the unused barn, and put the new one in the dinning room. About a week after his wife got back she asked what had happened to the old dinning room table, He tried to act innocent, but she said that is now the original table as the scar where her Father ha cut it wasn't there and the old set only had six chairs not eight. Never try to fool a wife.

Reminds me of a Freightliner Classic I bought years ago. The previous owner was a smoker and the brown interior parts turned out to be grey when I cleaned them with a strong citrus cleaner.

For those rust spots like you had on the wheels I usually use scrunched up kitchen foil takes a bit of time but can leave a great result 👍

that beautiful traction engine looks like you could fall into the "if i just remove one more part i'll be able to clean/paint/re-something a bit more" . . . if you don't intend to do a complete overhaul, be strong . . . otherwise go for it!
i've used the 0000 steel wool for something slightly different . . . it puts a beautiful satin finish on polyurethane . . . i always use gloss polyurethane because without the additives that give it a duller finish it seems much stronger and harder to damage.
i put on one or two coats and either steel wool or sand each to remove bubbles, drips or other imperfections . . . then a top coat taking extra care not to mess it up . . . then rub it down with the 0000 steel wool . . . it dulls the surface to a satin finish and really lets you see "into" the wood to get the grain.
i did an entire set of kitchen cabinets that way and the finish is almost bulletproof . . . you might think about using the method on one of your baseboards . . . or not.

Thanks so much for the tip on the Flash with Bleach, I may not have a traction engine, but you should see my kitchen sink given that I got a bottle of it yesterday! Witchcraft obviously, but very helpful into the bargain.

I find a good household degreaser to be Fairy power spray, it's sort of half way between washing up liquid & oven cleaner !
As well as degreasing it will if left, lift carbon deposits, i sometimes use it to clean brake dust from alloy wheels.

Yes I have tried it and it is very good. A friend of mine recommends "Swarfega" hand cleaner - I will try that too.

I use 0000 steel wool on fine gun finishs. As long as you use a lube it works great for removing rust. Can you not get this grade of wool in the UK?

Must remember that. I do a fair bit of work at old cars and Screwfix own degreaser is a very good cleaner as well and doesn't melt finishes like some with thinner in. Love the videos.

Hehe I have my youngest daughter still living with me and she has been a bit miffed since I put my vintage Vespa in the front room and started stripping it.... right next to my 1958 Lambretta which I stripped and started rebuilding it 4 or 5 years ago and kinda lost traction/distracted/major heart surgery got in the way of projects. My workbench is also in the front room plus boxes of games consoles waiting to be fixed, tools tools and more tools, cardboard boxes full of rattle can paints and a couple small Tecumseh type engines of vintage nature. I don't have a missus (had three and don't want a fourth) and my bedroom is full of tools, Reliant Robin parts, Vespa and Lambretta parts, computer parts and my computer desk and workspace and crammed in is a couple chest drawers and a bed... oh and six cats... and my quite extensive hi-fi... and books... and some of my modest Mamod's and Wilesco's... oh and quite an extensive collection of surplus army clothes and boots cos nothing beats a pair of old combats for getting dirty in but def no room for a woman however nice they might be :) Already got two daughters and six cats nagging me... don't want to add another voice to the choir lol

I don’t know what “with a flash of bleach” means but I do know that bleach is highly corrosive to iron.

    • @keithappleton
      @keithappleton  Před 5 lety +1

"Flash" with Bleach - "Flash" is the brand name, I know it is corrosive to iron but it's not on the parts long enough to do any harm - it just dissolves the grime and oil.

Seeing nothing in the comments to the subject, maybe you already know about removing rust from from steel and chromed steel parts using 0000 steel wool and mild phosphoric acid solution (Diet Coca-Cola). Use the diet type to avoid sugar residue.
For a period of time I owned a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Sedan, and that's a method we owners of such cars used avidly.
