Israeli military confirms flooding of Hamas tunnels in Gaza | DW News

- The Israeli military has confirmed that it has been flooding tunnels used by Hamas under the territory of Gaza. The army said that it was channeling 'large volumes of water' into Hamas' tunnel network, but claimed it was making sure groundwater wasn't affected. Israeli media reported in December that Israeli forces were testing using seawater to flood the tunnels. Experts warned that doing so could permanently damage freshwater supplies for Gaza's 2.3 million residents and risk the lives of hostages still being held by Hamas.

The Egyptian border patrol did the same thing something like 10 years ago. They flooded tunnels with raw sewage
😮
Really? The Hamas tunnels?
And nobody was asking about ground water fuckery?
@@christerry1773yup
It did not work
The only population that hide in tunnel is hamas. Hamas said tunnel aren't for civilian
Yes they said that but Hamas is not in control of all tunnels anymore and civilians need to find shelter so it's quite possible that some will have gone into the tunnels.

That's 100% okay i guess
Just not the right tunnels! Egypt allowed weapons to enter Gaza because of bribes, now the Philadelphia Axis will be captured by idf
Seems like a good and humane system since people can leave as water level rises too high
For people who think so badly of Hamas, they're counting on them to save the hostages doing this
You think the system is one big line?
The chance of large pockets of water being trapped, and suddenly released is very high. Trapping people in bottlenecks or obstacles moving in the way..
There is bound to be central areas, and even deeper compartments, where vital equipment and personnel is protected from bombing.
Look into how the vietnamese stayed safe.
Water flows into tunnels, it can short out electric devices such as lights, corrode doors/railroad tracks, and a lot more.

It’s not a tidal wave. Water in the tunnels will rise gradually. If people get their feet wet, they will move. If hostages are left, it would be on purpose - a risky PR strategy.
Exactly. People acting like it’s a 30ft tidal wave sweeping through in 5 minutes
Yet, it's not as easy as you make it sound! Not for those who will feel the water rushing in and then need to move. Unless they got a phone call or something to warn them that water was about to or some into their space??

Mostly correct however he made one silly assessment:
Hamas didn’t release hostages because of the ceasefire. He released them because of the pressure induced by the fighting, in order to get a few days of ceasefire. Clearly, in order to push Hamas for a deal you need to put on them stronger pressure. The distraction of the tunnels is a very important one.
I don't think any hostages are alive by now the way they are treated, poor people.

bro if they drown their own hostages(israels) then theyre basically fighting hamas only to genocide the population and destroy the city which means their reason isnt a reason anymore since theyre not rescuing hostages and they mey never release all hostages which means that the ministers idea is nonsense
Hamas made mistake when they named their war ad "Al-aqsa flood". Now they are getting free flood. But far away from aqsa.
did he really say "any fighting force needs a place to store it's weapons ....and hide hostages." as if taking civilian hostages is a normal military activity?
😅
Well, a significant number of the hostages were military personnel, and you are allowed to take prisoners of war, which they would have to store somewhere. Not that their own positions are the proper (or legal) place for it…
Well, you sorta cherry-picked his words. His sentence starts at 4:17
"Very briefly, the tunnels are essential to Hamas; any fighting force needs a rear area where it can store supplies, prep, treat casualties--and in this case (REFERRING TO HAMAS) as we've heard, hold hostages."
@@chrisk2557 The analyst was clearly trying to legitimize Hamas as a proper military fighting force. Hamas are barbaric butchers who TikTok'ed their brutal sexual violence against girls.
It's a shame DW gives airtime to an "analyst" who justifies weaponizing sexual violence against girls. Mike Martin and Hamas clearly see eye-to-eye on women's rights.
because the hostages are not civilians. all adults are combat trained and military age personnel by law.
Both of the men in the video completely overlooked the fact that
specific tunnels can be selected for flooding AFTER being checked for hostages.
The IDF can send drones, robots, and even military work dogs into the tunnels
in order to detect hostages and/or other human occupants PRIOR to flooding.
They shoot people carrying white flags so I don't think that they would bother checking for hostages.
and you forget, did they really do that? or did they even do that?
Not even a single bit. They were never interested in their own citizens, they were only ever interested in preserving their brutal and repressive state.
What for? To beg the scmBags to come out?! Ridiculous!!!
But can't find their hostages
By mentioning that it would take the drama out of the interview and then they would not able to make Israel out to be the baddies
He says, just use fire hydrants that are available to any fire dept??? Does this "expert" really think there are working fire hydrants in gaza now?
Right 😂🤦🏾♂️ let alone fresh water has to be trucked in !!! Shame
Well in that case they can copy the Egyptians and just pump in sewage.
Won't even need to fill it up to get Hamas out of the tunnels.
Use sea water. There is no need to preserve underground freshwater reservoirs there because the idea is to permanently depopulate that area.
Where did you get the impression that this is the idea from? Israel has no intention of depopulating Gaza.
The fact is they are using fresh water

Is IDF going to fill the tunnels completely or only 10 inches to make the movement and transportation in the tunnels harder?

Good idea folks, tunnels shouldn't be damaged either. Billions of money spent on them and they are a rare piece of engineering work. And so declare them as "National Heritage". Let South Africa and ICJ have their headquarters in those tunnels.

It baffles my mind why everyone criticises every move made by Israel but no one has any criticism for Hamas holding innocent hostages.

The obvious is obvious. And saying Hamas is bad so Israel is justified is untrue. Since Israel has been doing rather bad for a rather long time.
And what it's doing now is incredibly destructive to a civilian population.
Salting the land is a common tactic used during war.
I am no fan of Israeli expansion driven by the nature of right wing strangle hold on Israeli parliament but two horrendous atroscities will never make a right. Its not like they are digging a trench from the ocean to the tunnel entrance and flooding them, with hundreds of miles of tunnes even with the largest pumps it will take a long time to fill those tunnels probably weeks, so let that sink in on the time frame people have to get out of those tunnels. Anyone working in construction will have an idea of how much volume and how many pumps it would take to displace a tunnel with water that a man could walk through. Its not like its an instant fill.

The "expert" said that the tunnels could be used as a place for refuge for the civilians. In all of the tunnels uncovered or explored the only evidence of civilians has been the hostages. The civilians don't seem to have access to the tunnels. Was his intention to make the Israelis seem cruel?
