    So this is Gerber's version of the multi purpose camp hook. I like it.

    Tent stake tool can also be used for lifting cooking pots off fire like Dutch ovens,those with wire handles.

    For camping, I would go with the Stakeout, as it's got some key "Daddy can help you with that" tools, like the tweezers and saw. Being lightweight it'll do. But as an EDC, Truss.

    I have quite a few Gerber multitools in my collection as well, but when it came down to features I wanted in mine I went with the leatherman surge, having the removable T- Shank adapter means the variety of tools you can add on to it is almost limitless among with the great tool selection it has on it already. It's heavy though and quite expensive next to that I would say a Swiss army knife (and if necessary paired with a set of small set of pliers) would make for a better tool with better quality for camping outdoors. Thanks for the great vid and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable

    Actually nice overview of your Gerber collection - which I think covers most of the Gerber multitools. You're right none of them really seem to be good for camping or other outdoor activities like bushcraft, I've always seen Gerber multitools as either urban or specialised for the military/firearms, like the Sight, I think the long reamer on that is for cleaning carbon out of weapons. The only Gerber I have is the MP600 bladeless (as I'm in the UK and can't EDC locking blades) which is great for around the house or working on my bike etc. but not what I'd ever take camping/bushcrafting as it's too heavy anyway. If I really wanted to take a full size multitool camping it would be a Rebar (even though it doesn't have scissors). Btw we are allowed locking/fixed blades here in the UK for valid reason which includes in pursuit of a hobby or outdoor activity so it's no problem, I also normally take a fixed blade bushcrafting anyway, but I don't take a full sized multitool even if mountain biking as it isn't neccessary.
    As to the Gerber Stake Out (which still isn't available here in the UK) it's actually the first multitool I've seen which adopts a hook much like those on many Victorinox, which most Victorinox owners, even fanboys (I'm one of them!) don't seem to rate very highly.
    For camping/backpacking in fact there are a number of Victorinox models which would be better than this one. Huntsman/Fieldmasters are around $30 in USA and have saw, scissors, hook, reamer/awl and more. If you really insisted on a locking blade go for the Evo S18 but you'd be paying a bit more at around $65. But the king of them all would have to be the alox Farmer X with outstanding scissors, saw, and inline reamer/awl, just no hook. Based on the Soldier model issued to the Swiss military for nearly 6 decades, it's built like a tank. Yes it's a bit pricier at $70 but you could hand it down the generations and your grandchildren could go camping with it 50 years from now.
    Bear in mind most camp knives, scout knives, and even old school military knives, never had locking blades.

      True about the locking blades. Leatherman and Gerber both started out with great multitools without locking blades. I was very surprised when I actually looked at my collection almost none of them had a complement of tools similar to the Stake Out. As for victorinox I've been looking at the huntsman which seems a pretty impressive tool!

      @@hvacbudget8600 Can't go wrong with Victorinox. Actually the Huntsman/Fieldmaster do have a pretty similar toolset to the stakeout (blade scissors, saw, hook) and they're not too pricey.

      Very true it would not have all the tools I was looking for because it is a specialized tool. , I was just surprised out of all the Gerber tools I have, there were not many with most of the Gerber Stake Out's more common tools. Scissors,awl,saw, knife,file etc.

    In your opinion, in order of importance, what are the 5 most important tools that you would consider to be critical for camping?

    • @hvacbudget8600
      @hvacbudget8600  Před 2 lety

      I guess it depends how extreme a person is at camping. If it's survival out into the wild, definitely a knife is probably the big item to have. Saw, ferro rod, whistle, awl, like several other multitools have is big. For more normal weekend camping, maybe knife, saw, hook (for carrying items etc.),scissors, bottle opener, can opener. The awl,file might not be used much. The awl can be used like a needle in repair so that comes in handy. I think it really depends on ones individual level of camping for the tools needed.

    For camping victorinox workchamp no réal pliers but all the rest with locking blade all you need is a knipex cobra pliers and you are set
    But heavier bigger and more expensive but when you have them you are set for camping 😉

    Have you used this multitool regularly yet? Why this camping themed tool has no can opener is stunning. You can drink an alcoholic or old fashioned soda but can't eat a some canned corn beef hash or fruit lol! I really like the basic tool set I'm not bashing this tool but it should be $34.99 multitool.

      I just got this tool so these are just first impressions so far. Frankly it has a toolset I don't use much. I usually always carry something with pliers. That being said I have read about avid hikers that love minimal tools, so this might be geared more for them. As far as the price, it does seem high, but if gas prices keep rising everything will get far more expensive unfortunately.

      For any multi purpose tool I would never use the can opener. I have P38’s on or in everything a nickel a piece cuts better and you don’t have all that bulk of a knife or a multi tool to deal with. I attach them all with the little twist cable won’t come off until you take it off.

    It is beyond me why anyone would buy, or even want, so many Gerber multitools. Gerber's out-the-front pliers automatically make it undesirable as a multi-tool because it reduces the length of other tools that ought to be longer.
    It is also beyond me why anyone would think a set of tiny scissors would be very desirable in a camping tool. They can't do any camp task that can't be accomplished with a knife. I don't even think they are very important to have on any multitool. A sharp knife is quicker, for example, at cutting out coupons than tiny scissors and at least as good at cutting cordage.
    Finally, it doesn't make any sense to me to build a carabiner into a multitool the way Gerber has with the Stakeout. It makes the tools in the already undersized Stakeout even shorter. Whatever you would use the carabiner for in camping would have to be very temporary if you were planning to use the Stakeout for anything else.
    It strikes me as a well-made but ill-conceived piece of...kit.

      Yeah, those are about the only reasons I can think of. Add them to your collection, but never carry them. Review them so nobody will buy them who would just be disappointed in them.
      I'm not saying that Gerber hasn't had some good innovations (e.g. center drive), or that they only turn out products that are not good quality. One of my oldest everyday carries is a Gerber easy-out folder that I've had so long I don't even remember the model name.

    • @simonh6371
      @simonh6371 Před 2 lety

      @@craigmooring2091 Don't know about never carrying them, I think people collect them over years and rotate them, and retire tools after they go out of rotation but hang on to them. Actually the guy on this channel seems to have more Leatherman than Gerber, he owns and reviews all sorts, SOG, Buck, SAKs. Probably like a lot of us it just kind of grew on him.
      Btw I'm no Gerber fanboy, I wouldn't pay that much (here in the UK they cost more) for gear mostly made in the Far East. But I do have a US made MP600 which I don't regret buying.

      At $50 with a lockable blade/all metal design/ screwed in ..not pinned/, doesn’t have a scary shiny knife people tend to freak out nowadays / doesn’t need addition cost for a pouch /not as bloated with toolset for the sake OF “countability” and tri tone looks savvy AF. And the cheapest SAK comparable with this is the $75 outrider .
      These days SAKs seems obsolete as edc , over shadowEd by clippable folders with their thicker spines and are now relegated to survival kit duty or camping duty….hidden…unuseen and often not needed….. unless I need a great can opener!

    • @randomescu
      @randomescu Před 2 lety +1

      Victorinox saw is garbage against wet, living branches. The teeth get covered with sticky wood. Same is available for all multitools saws. The exception is Surge, you can equip a tshank blade with larger and more distanced teeth. At least that was my experience.

    • @simonh6371
      @simonh6371 Před 2 lety +1

      @@mjfab74 I disagree. Even a $30 Hunter or Fieldmaster is better than this Gerber. If you really must have a locking blade there is the Evo S17 but it comes in a bit pricier in the US at around $65 as far as I know.
      But the best one which is far superior to this Gerber and those other Victorinox models is the Farmer X in alox. It's based upon the actual Soldier knife issued to Swiss soldiers for nearly 60 years and has an outstanding scissors and saw as well as inline reamer which can do some serious work. Yes it's a bit pricey at $70 but it's so durable your grandchildren will be able to go camping with it in 50 years. Can't see one of these Gerbers being around in 50 years.

      @@randomescuI wouldn’t call it totally garbage. Small saw has limitations as compared to pocket boy saw. but in an emergency where I didn’t carry my primary large fixed blade. It came handy cutting down 3” diameter pole, that saved my friend off a mountain side where he fell down, thus saving me and the rest of us from endangering ourselves rescuing him….

    • @mjfab74
      @mjfab74 Před 2 lety +1

      @@simonh6371 “hunter” has no scissor unless you meant “huntsmen” no locking blade, same as the “fieldmaster” (w\c looks awesome with white scales) and all “Alox series” (if they build a Swiss army 7”X” alox, maybe? I,ll find a way to reprofile the bottle opener into a can opener thou)
      I get it, in terms of personal safety, opting for a non-locking blade is a personal choice. The SAK s17 is errrr…S18 is a better fit for me.
