  • In today’s episode, I’m building a pedalboard for my brother Adam! Adam has been doing a killer job soldering all of our Vertex cables, so I decided to let him take his pick of pedals from my collection so we can build him his first pedalboard!
    For his rig, we’re focusing on the basic elements of a good pedalboard: Overdrive, Modulation, Reverb, and Delay. I’ll shoot you some helpful tips for building your first (or millionth!) pedalboard!

Gut a bunch of popular effect PCBs and solder all of the input/output leads in line. Then mount it in a metal chassis with holes for the switches and knobs. @@VertexEffectsInc Well when it comes to pedalboard building I'm no professional!!
      I've got a wealth of experience of playing in loads of different musical situations which has been a 30years plus & still growing learning curve!!
      You get to know what works & what the least amount of stuff you need to carry around,because let's face it venue staff want you in & out as quickly as possible!!This has made me think over the years about what I need to get away with the job in hand!!
      My basic bare bones setup is a (from guitar which is usually a Fender Stratocaster which has been heavily customised too give me Gibson tones as it's loaded with a Dimarzio Paf Pro & 2 Dimarzio Cruisers & a Wilkinson vs100 tremolo unit & roller nut & locking tuners which is perfect for keeping me in tune!!) Dunlop Wah,Boss TU2,Boss Compressor,Ibanez CS9 Chorus,Boss Flanger,MXR Phase 90,Ibanez TS808,Boss DS1 & the truly incredible Electro Harmonix Hot Wax (this gives me the core of my tone!!!it's incredible & I've tried them all & this is instant history of overdriven Marshall in a box!!) Boss DD3 & Boss DD2 (short & long repeats) & a Hardware reverb (influenced by the late Gary Moore for those spooky moments.By the way it's pretty good too!!) & this either gets plugged into a old Marshall Plexi 100watt or 50watt,Vox AC30 or for a more compact setup a old Rivera R30 which is incredible as it's got a Vox style voice (channel 1) & a Fender style voice (channel 2) & why ever Rivera discontinued them is totally criminal,as these are the ultimate pedal platform amplifiers (mine (I have 4!!Here in England that's a rarity because the distribution of them was terrible & now you can't buy any new Revera products this side of the Atlantic!!) & I've tried everything!!) & over the years I've experimented with different speakers as the original Celestion was rubbish (a 75 watt & it didn't please my ears!!) & so I tried various Eminence which were better,then a EV which gave me power but made the amplifier heavier than the Asian Continent!!
      Now the basket in there is a Celestion Creamback which is super light on weight (great for transportation!!) but huge on tone & volume throw & has all the best bits of the Celestion Blue & Greenback!!!!!
      Again cables are important & I either use Dimarzio,Orange,Fender,Planet Waves,Klotz,Bareknuckle or any other top draw cables & they're all soldered!!!
      My pedalpower is either a MXR isobrick,Voodoo Labs pedalpower or TheGigrig Generator (again depending on what pedalboard I use!!) & the thing is they all work perfectly!!!!
      They might not look glamorous like your products,but they function & do a job which is perfect for me!!!!

    I am building a pedalboard currently. I plan to put a multi-effects processor on the board with some of the pedals I have, that can't be reproduced by the multi-effects processor. So, I am guessing that my Ravish-Sitar pedal is one that is better than what a multi-effect processor can do. So, I haven't bought the multi-effects processor yet. I am figuring there are other pedals I am unaware of that would give me a better balance between small pedals vs multi-effects.

    Mason - loving that a UE300 is being showcased! Question on Powercon vs. IEC connector - Powercon is a great connector with it's locking format, but you are tied to that cable. Is there a benefit over IEC? Thanks!

    • @VertexEffectsInc
      @VertexEffectsInc  Před 3 lety +1

      UE300 is great. You will need a powerconn end to power the board on the board side, but a standard 3-prong AC on the other side going into the wall. There is no advantage of using the IEC vs. Power Conn from a powering standpoint. It's just that the D-Connector for the Power Conn doesn't require a specialize punch out like IEC does. D-Shape connector punch is round so anyone could drill this without any specialized punch out.

      If I was in your bro's shoes I know I would prefer to have it wired for stereo, if only for the chorus. I thought that was going to be why you used the effects loop on the multi-unit, to have the drives+volume in mono and everything after split.
      But seems like if he opts for that in the future, it won't be too daunting a task for him to whip up a few additional cables to length 😉
