People argue which of the three titans is the best, but honestly you CANNOT go wrong with any of them. New Haven pizza is FIRE
I'm from New Haven and my favorite out of all Three restaurants is Modern Apizza
Born,. And lived in New Haven for 20yrs...Modern Apizza is the best spot of the three. Olde World Apizza in North Haven is a sleeper too
@@rileyrileyriley100 I've never heard sleeper used in that way? What does that mean? That it is good?
@@underated17it means it’s not known, like kinda of a secret
7:34 I love that he mentioned "all dog goes to heaven"🤣 90s cartoon pizzas are the reason I love Pizza, even before I eat any pizza 🤣...
Yass I love a thin crust, tomatoey, cheesy, greasy pizza. Reminds me of home, Jersey. I can’t find that in GA. Their crust is too thick and the pizza is dry.
Worked at Modern for 2 years... good ole times 😥
Of the three, I like Modern the best, but they're all good.
Glad my city did you proud and was hospitable! If anything, we do have that good pizza. Hopefully you all will venture back up north again and try some of the other goodies we have within the city. Deep fried seafood being one of them. It’s so ironic though, I love traveling to Philly for the food scene (and to see my fam). You all definitely have a variety for the foodies (plant-based to that sub/hoagie following)!
I grew up in a borough of NYC and the pizza was always good in the day. When in NY try Joe’s on Carmine. Now New Haven pizza can be great. I’ve eaten at all three of the places you visited. My rankings, 3rd place is Pepe’s as I find if the least consistent, I’ve only eaten there 1 time when I thought it was great, and it was that day. 2nd place is Sally’s, also somewhat inconsistent but when good it is great. 1st place for me is Modern, it has been great every time I’ve gone, and I will be there again in a few days. It is a 1 1/2 hour drive for me so always planned. Glad you enjoyed.
Good to know Frank Pepe’s is inconsistent. Drove 2 hours to try it and didn’t think it was worth it at all. Love Joe’s in NYC.
@@chaybyrd77 they can all be inconsistent, Modern was also when I went there 2 weeks ago. The waiter ignored my request to tell them I wanted it crispy. Long drive to be disappointed.
@@js7851 appreciate the info
In NH dialect, it's pronounced ah-beetz. Glad you and the guys enjoyed your visit.
It is such a culinary and apizza blessing, to live in the New Haven Ct. area.😋🥰
Great video man! I’m from CT and went to college in New Haven. I consider myself a pizza guy and I eat at any of those top 3 spots whenever I’m back in that area. The absolute best! But there are a few others worth mentioning. Here’s my official pizza restaurant list 1. Pepe’s 2. Modern 3. Sally’s 4. Abate’s 5. Next Door 6. Bar. I still haven’t been to Zuppardi’s but I hear that’s really good too. Oh, and check out the documentary “Pizza, A Love Story”…it’s all about the history of the big 3 in New Haven. Very well done.
Sally's and Pepe's are a mile from my house, best apizza hand's, having grown up on NY Pizza.
I Also Want To Thank You For Showing Off Connecticut’s Pizza Talent!
The crunch on some of those thin crust pies are next level. Look so easy to eat in massive quantities!
After this video I'm ready for a New Haven vacation!!!
Dope video JL. Those pizzas look 🔥 not every place can nail down the crust. Love seeing aquaman and the whole crew eat together. Love from the west coast
The flavor of my home state's pizza hit J.L.'s soul. You could see it from his first bite. We don't play with the quality of our ingredients. Has to be the best!
My this... Our that. You have nothing to do with that pizza... Hahaha.
Thank you for giving us great pizza
Hello Queen 💐🌼💯 I like your screen name...Saying hello from Melrose Park Illinois 🌞🇺🇲💯
Born and raised in CT, but live in GA since 1979. Thanksgiving 2021 family reunion brought us all to the New Haven apizza tour. My son-in-law can't eat cheese, so Zuppardi's in West Haven was a huge hit (local clam pies served with lemon). Sally's and Frank Pepe's clam pies have cheese.
Zuppardis is #2 on my list of the four. Modern, Zuppardis, Sallys, Pepes.
You can ask them not to put it on lol
New Haven is my pizza bucket list.
There is no pizza better than the white clam pie from Pepe’s. #1 Pepe, #2 Modern, #3 Sally’s
💯
If you like clams.
The disrespect to Zuppardis clam pie is disgusting
Frigging jest Awesome.. Was looking for a New Drop from Jl like evey 20min or so this morning..Then Bam he hits us with a Pizza video as I am Eating Pizza for my Breakfast like can you get any better of a Saturday Morning..What a way to start a Saturday morning off with Pizza and Jl like killer video Thanks Jl.👌🍕👍
It’s the little things in life that bring the most joy
That was one of your best pieces of work. The way you did the comparison at the end was very thoughtful! All the pics looked awesome. And Happy Birthday to you!
Pizza is literally thee best food to eat 🍕🍕🍕
Man I know this is so random but my mom recently found out about my weed channel where i smoke weed for a living & now i be thinking about quitting or deleting my stuff now😩😩
@@SevenHunnid yeah dass hella random or you promoting your channel🤔 but it you want me to check it out just say dat🤣
Pizza with the Italian Peroni beer and a glass of wine on the side makes a very enjoyable meal
god bless them eye tailains for bring pizza to America n to the world
@@Adam_K14 🤣 I like how you pronounced "italians" I know people that pronounce it that way too
Thanks for representing CT!!
Oh yeah
You won't get anything less than a spectacular pizza at any of the Big 3 in New Haven or at any of the many other underrated joints in that city or surrounding areas either. Some are better than others sure, but not a bad pie to be had. Pizza Paradise really! Glad u guys enjoyed it because if you love pizza and don't like those shops then you are just being picky and were looking for some reason not to IMHO Sally's always been my fav of the 3 though and that's not taking anything away from the other 2 it's just that Sally's sits atop the mountain that's all. Nothing quite like it.
Going to New Haven for those pizzas is the equivalent of going to Philly for the cheesesteaks at their famous spots. Same idea...different food group Lolol
Great pizza tour and analysis you guys definitely picked the top spots in New Haven. It looked like Mizz The Grizz was holding back a bit. He normally devours food.
New Haven born, raised, and currently living. Zuppardi's should be your next stop the next time you're around for a visit! It's technically West Haven but we claim it as one of ours haha. Also, a lot of people are gonna tell you to go to Bar. Please don't. It's easily the most overrated and gets way too much clout. Glad you enjoyed my city, friend!
They all look valid
My favorite is Sally's, but they are all exceptional. You need to come back and add a couple places. Bar is sometimes considered the fourth in the New Haven appiza lists. Zuppardi's in West Haven has an atmosphere that you would love. The clams there are huge.
Also, from what I've seen of Modern, the pizza you should try is the clams casino pie. It had a bit too much moisture when I ordered it, but have a college friend who has been getting it since he was a child.
I grew up just outside new haven in Hamden ct. It isn't even that the good pizza is an outlier. Good pizza is EVERYWHERE.
One of my favorites was this tiny Italian grocery store called "Sapori D'Italia. It was just a 15 minute walk from my house, and they absolutely nail it.
Very good in-depth and authentic reviews. Keep up the great work!
Loved your video on New Haven pizza which ironically I was just there. The pizza you called at Frank Pepe's Margherita was actually their original tomato pie. Margherita pizza has fresh mozzarella on it and what you were eating did not. I love all three places. You can't go wrong with any of them.
This is correct. It's not margherita. It's an original tomato pie, which the locals call a "red." But it's fantastic. As is the margherita.
Awesome video. That crunch when you bite into that rosemary potato at Sally's. Damn. I'm on my way to New Haven right now and cant wait for this!
I've been going to these restaurants for decades and never thought to try the potato pie at Sally's, and that's my favorite of the bunch. Definitely on the docket next time!
I wish you could still build the brick coal fired ovens like that. You cannot replicate the pizza it produces.
Really enjoyed your vid. Great comparisons and evaluation. You truly know your pizza.
I'm born & raised in the 'haven, grew up eating ALL of the Italian pies after our schools' basketball games. It was the highlight, whether we won or lost!!
not sure how/why you popped up on my suggested videos, but i love your content. already subscribed and enjoying videos on this fine Sunday morning. looking forward to watching all of your videos.
glad you got up there!
You know it bro! We got the best in New Haven. Even though Hamden, CT has a gem in Sergios Pizza.
Olde World also...
@@Viva_la_natura yes
"This is better than Star Tavern..." Yesss, and I live in West Orange. Don't get me wrong, Star is very solid...love their food. I just feel like they are trying to be a New England bar pie spot in New Jersey...and it can't beat an actual New England pie from New Haven. Right on JL! Great content as always!
Glad you came to CT
Yes! My hometown and the best pizza ever! Hands down! If you’re brave go to Whalley pizza or Pizza House or Triple A. These are where locals go and not tourists.
First place great job producing this video. I would post a pic in my comments of you guys standing in front of Sally's before they opened taking pics. I was in my car waiting also for them to open when I saw you guys with some professional cameras. I knew right away you were filming a pizza tour. But I never thought I would have a chance to see it done because I had no clue who you were. Once again good video and yes its all subjective on whos better but next time you come add Bar downtown and Zuppardi in West Haven. My opinion Sally's is absolutely the best. But all the others run second place for me. Thanks guy for coming up North and look forward to see more stuff from you
@10:10 There's grated pecorino romano on the Tomato Pie. Plus there's olive oil, fine sea salt, and oregano in the crushed tomatoes.
So simple and closer to how simple pizza was but, yeah, it's good stuff. I like Pepe's Tomato Pie better than their mozzerella.
All of em stupendous 🔥🔥🔥🍕🍕🍕
You didn't go to the bar tavern that has the most crispiest Pizza in New Haven!!!💯
If you ever come back, there are more apizza gems, and each unique in their own way... Zuppardi's and Roseland's are great new haven style pizzas. Bar has my favorite potato and bacon pie. Colony has a killer hot oil (and sausage) pie and a salad pie which we get at work a lot (lighter, not traditional new haven pizza - we call it lunch pizza). Almost any pizza restaurant that has been around for at least 50 years here in the county is well worth your time.
I just threw an engagement party where we got a cheese and specialty pie from 8 different apizza locations and let everyone rate their favorites. The flavor changes once the pizza hits the box, but it's still great. Lucky to be local to new haven.
You put out amazing content bro!!! Every video makes me hungry af!! Keep pushing 💪
Looks amazing! Former NYer living in London. Have to make my own pizza in a pizza oven to get that feeling of home.
Former? I’ve never heard a New Yorker say former New Yorker 🤣
@@allabored4443 I’m also a former NYer had to move out of that crazy place I do miss the pizza tho can’t lie lol
@@CICBeautyTV I’m a New Yorker in Florida but NYC is always home. 💜
JL I hope you had that Lipitor on deck for this episode 😂😂 man that cheese slice from Modern looked 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Sally's is the best pizza in New Haven period.
I grew up in new haven county I am watching this for nostalgia. I tried to get my local pizzeria to make a tomato pie,but no olive oil just 2 days ago
New haven ct , we got the best pizza in the world
Great video guys. You gave great reviews on all the places! Subscribed. The guy in the back loves pizza as much as I do.
My home town new haven CT happy you got to experience new haven pizza
You nailed it, all three are legit and it does go by preference.
New heaven Connecticut 🙏🏽❤️🎉
I can see it on your smile with the first bite JL... great pizzas.
I love when you're friend said its like all dogs go to heaven made brought back a memory from youth great review
Dave Portnoy will approve of this review!
The intro was an unintentional shoutout to Portnoy. Didn't know where he was and couldn't pronounce the street name 😅
Absolutely!
I want to go to New Haven sooo bad!
I doubt it considering that narcissistic idiot isn't actually in this video.
but he is not a pizza competent and trustable critic
😛😀JL JUPITER 💕 💕 💕 LOVE WHEN YOU INCLUDE YOUR. 3 BEST BUDS IN VIDEO " GOD BLESS U ALL 🙏😊& I DO LOVE 🍕 PIZZA"
Next time try some of the underdogs: Next Door, Nolo/Da Legna, Frisco’s, Grand. Or outside New Haven, Zuppardi’s is another legend, and Roseland. Also Mike’s in West Haven is awesome too.
Zuppardis might be my fave
Happy Saturday Everyone!
You Gotta Try Zuppardis Pizza In West Haven, CT it’s definitely competition with Pepe’s Sally’s And Modern!
This is my hometown. I’m loving this!
Like the NH vids dude. Pepes clam pie is always our go to pie!!!!!
Sally’s number #1 I’ve been eating at all 3 for 55 years NH best pizza on the damn planet!
Sending love JL Jupiter love pizza 🍕 🤤
Great job as always JL
im in hamden and you did a great job...glad you enjoyed CT new haven!
Def Sallys is my fav, but can’t be mad at anyone who picks Modern.
Happy birthday my man! Those pies look stellar.
Modern Pizza and Howe Street Pizza has ALWAYS been the favorites out of all the Pizza Houses in New Haven.
U Missed out on HOWE STREET though.
But MODERN has been the best known because they cook it in a Brick Oven with Thin Crust.
New Haven is KNOW for our Pizza. HANDS DOWN!
This was great
Blessed to be in the area, Modern , Pepe’s, Sally’s, Bar, De Legna, Mangia in North Haven , Zuppardis in West Haven , Fusco’s in Cheshire Rendezvous in Meriden. On and on . God Bless
You're making me hungry! Now I need to visit New Haven! Sounds like all 3 are winners.
Awww Prime can eat something today
I loved watching this video! You fellas did a great job with covering the comfort food of N'Haven, APIZZA! (A-Beets). I have to say I am a Modern guy Sorry but I love the eggplant pie. Gonna call you when I'm in Philly for the best cheese steak. Be well and keep eating the good stuff!
Sally’s, Modern, and Pepe’s in that order for me. Next time you’re in New Haven, try Ernie’s in Westville. They’re in that tier with the three you went to as the best New Haven has to offer.
Love your reviews. So when I see it's you, first thing I do is Like and Save it. Then I see you're doing the best pizzas on the planet! .. and it becomes must-see TV.
I'm excited. Yalls in my woods and I have never had apizza in New Haven...run it down like you do. I'll be checking it out soon!
I was lucky enough to grow-up in New Haven and it is the capital of apizza. Love them all but my favorite is Sally's. Whenever, I am near New Haven I stop in for a pue and a pie to go!!! Happy Belated Birthday.
I grew up in a house torn on whether Sally's or Pepe's was best. But right now, my go to pie is the sausage and onion pie from Modern. It's perfection.
Modern cheese for me.
Awesome content 👏
That looks great.
I used to work as a cook for consiglios right next to Pepe's pizza and during the weekends we would cook each other food we'd make them a tray or two of chicken Parm or penne vodka or whatever they wanted and they'd give us a couple of pies....it was awesome and then I'd buy myself a pie and pick it up after my shift...amazing couple of years for sure lol
Deliciously AWESOME!!!🍕🍕🍕
It's just GREAT to have choices! U can't bet that!! I applaud all of them👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 THANKS JL! I'm hungry 🤦🏽♀️
Totally agree about all three. Must have-pizzas. Stop there whenever I go through town.
The Homies on Wooster Street! Good SH$T!!! I need to get out there and make that run! Thanks for sharing! Cheers!
The Clams Casino at Modern. Next level🍕.
In the Pacific Northwest. Would kill for a real slice of pizza and B.E.C. on a roll. You hit the right places there good work!!
I landed on Sally's. Its my go to. Next time you go, get the sausage and cheese pie at Sally's. It just might rock your world.
Oh mama!!! This is the ultimate tour and so envious!!!
That little strap poking out on your hat is killing me 😂
Excellent review! I want to come from Canada now to try New Haven apizza!
This was an amazing video. I really like your style and videography. Excellent video
Awesome Vlog as usual. If you're in Brooklyn, NY sometime try Di Fara pizza. You'll say one word, "YEP" LOL the best I've ever had
Thanks Brother, Zup’s in East Haven should be on your next trip. New Haven has some mega stars in the pizza universe. We are lucky to have such great pizza in our state.
Pizza house is my personal favorite. I love pizza cut in squares
Oh word u made it to my hood!!! New Haven has the best pizza!!! 🎯💯
The next time you forward to New Haven check out BAR they have great pizza too.... They're right across the street from Louis Lunch....
