- I wanted a special segment of Judy Arnold and Unpredictable Ann Calvello in this 1967 black and white broadcast shot in Hawaii. This match was between the San Francisco Shamrocks and the Eastern Warriors.
Ann Theresa Calvello (August 1, 1929 -- March 14, 2006) was a U.S. athlete and notable personality in the sport of roller derby.
Calvello had competed in roller derby in seven decades: the 1940s through the 2000s. She broke into the sport in 1948 originally skating for a league called International Rollerspeedway. Calvello, who often sported dyed hair and wild makeup, was known for her temper along with her unconventional looks. She was nicknamed "Banana-Nose" by fans. She travelled the world skating in Europe, Guam, Philippines, Cuba, Australia and of course all over the United States. She broke her nose 12 times during her career. Her most famous rival on the track was the late Joan Weston.
In 2001, Demon Of The Derby, a biographical documentary film about Calvello, was completed by Fireproof Productions.
She never officially retired from roller derby. In early 2006, she was diagnosed with liver cancer, and died at the age of 76 soon after.
Judy Arnold also one of the greatest women's Roller Derby skaters to ever grace the banked oval. She began skating in 1960 and her career quickly began to soar. Arnold soon became the captain of the Philadelphia Warriors in 1967 and at the peak of her career, she retired in 1975.
Both ladies are Roller Derby Legends.
I met Ann several times in the San Francisco Bay Area & she is an icon. Nicest lady you ever want to meet. From having her own chalise in her local watering hole to always sending birthday cards to her favorite people; even casual friends; she is beyond missed. Love you Ann.
Love this vintage footage!!! 👏🏾👏🏾😁👏🏾👏🏾
Miss Judy Arnold was my favorite back then..in Hawaii, they were known as the HAWAIIAN WARRIORS 😍❣🤙👍
..with Buddy Atkinson and Little Richard❣💌🤙👍
Awesome ! Good times! Good memories! Every Saturday was Derby Day!!
The three greatest skaters ever: (in alphabetical order) Judy Arnold, Anne Calvello and Judy Sowinsky. Period.
Skinny Mini Miller too! :)
Uh....excuse me....Joanie Weston is in that group!
Im a former roller derby skater and THIS IS A REAL LONG 5 STRIDE TRACK!!! I would love to find one of these OLD long tracks with MASONITE safety covering. Your thighs will BURN skating on this track! I miss the old days. Thank goodness for these old films & dvds!
Judy Arnold ruled. I was in ❤ with teammate Buddy Atkinson.
Judy Arnold is the greatest of all time. 40's thru2000;s.
I'll take Weston over Arnold but it's close.
Weston is just bigger, Judy has superior skills, no doubt.
@@loudenkliehr3633 Saw Weston as a Bomber and T-Bird skate Arnold and she was out skated and clobbered by Judy Arnold a few times. Judy was a great skater but she could also through a mean right/left boxing combo as well as some great hay makers. Hardman, Weston, Calvelo, Sowinski, Lynch, Syverson, Vallow, Dunn, Lazlo, Hernandez, Earlene Brown, BJ Peterson, Kazmerski, Kadermas, Betty Brown, Carol Philips, Ruberta Mitchell, Candi Mitchell, Elaine Everson all got clocked by Arnold.
Sorry but Judy Arnold never could be comparable to Joan Weston or Jan Vallow
This is so cool! My aunt was in the roller derby in the late 60's-70.
Ive been looking all over the internet for some pictures or videos.
who was your aunt?
@@dougmphilly My Aunts name was Madeline Donlin
Judy Arnold was the Best!!!
this is a blast and brings back memories, thanks for posting !!
Roller derby was a lot different than roller games roller derby was a more true sport with classy interviews roller games was more of a theater imitation wrestling format trash talking interviews yes Arnold Sowinski syverson BJ Peterson we’re all great skaters but the derby had Joan Weston Sandy Dunn Ann Calvello. And one that’s never talked about too much and I think is the most strongest and hardest hitting was Jan vallow
@@markegley8343 they were equally great genres of the same sport; Roller Games was the best til they got too carried away with the theatrics and it became a clown show
great memories.........
Being a former roller derby skater myself, I know the difference. This 1967 Hawaiian Warriors track was A REAL "5" STRIDE TRACK!!! (notice how long it is). If you're a a former skater, then you know what I'm talking about. In the mid-70s, the tracks were cut down to shorter straight-a-ways (awful). You could go out on a jam and almost run around the track in a circle (just ask little Richard Brown or Larry Lewis)(LOL). I don't know why they shortened the tracks, but I wish they STILL had a long "5" stride straight-a-way and make you work for it. Your thighs would literally burn!!! Trust me, even as I get older, I still have these strong killer hamstring thighs. (LOL) Boy, do I miss the old days of derby. To all the BOB MAYO gang from the Baltimore/Washington area, I love and miss you all. To the ones we lost, R.I.P.
FINALLY Elmer Anderson is on the mike.
This is my great aunt, so basically a pro-wrestler on wheels.
Ann Calvello was my inspiration,
Such a Great Lady
Yes she was.
Judith arnold is the best
By this time, roller derby was deteriorating from a sport into pro-wrestling on wheels.
this must be the games, not derby.
@@dougmphilly The game they showed was Games. The Shamrocks were Games' attempt to put a permanent team in San Fransisco but it didn't work out.
Hi! Does anyone know if these videos are in the public domain or if anyone holds the rights to them. I would like to use this clip in a project I'm producing. Thanks!
THE CHERRY HILL ARENA IN HADDONFIELD N.J. WHERE WE SAW ALL OUR ROLLER GAMES MATCHUPS INCLUDING THAT MATCH RACE BETWEEN JUDY ARNOLD AND PHYCHO RONNIE RAINS.
who are you kidding? roller derby goes further back than the 1970's or 60's. none of them compare to terri lynch or gerry murray or midge brasuhn or annis jensen or jeanie porter etc. they were all good with judy sowinski the most underrated of all.
whoM===it's whom are you kidding? gotta have that letter M when objective of subject....
Sowinski was the greatest after Judy Arnold, but i think she, like Weston, was physically stronger than Arnold.
@@jamalwindgate5516 yes, also Severson was stronger but Arnold could outskate them all.
No Daniel Zwick I can't find any of aunt Maddy😖
My top skaters, Female: Judy Arnold [#1], Judy Sowinski [#2], Candi Mitchell[#3], B.J. Petersen [#4], The Rest: Weston, Cavello, Lefty Lena McBride, Tony cada... {?}, / most Hated: Sally [too corny] Vega. Best Male Skaters: #1 Little Richard Brown[has no equal], #2 Larry Lewis, #3 The great Danny Riley[ most exciting and entertaining of all skaters ].
@@jamalwindgate5516 I totally agree; I had to check to see if I wrote this👍
The bad girl herself.....she was somebody to watch....esp w the hair✌️🖖😺😽😍
Wrestling on skates.
Judy Arnold was the greatest of the female skaters, Sowinski and Weston were stronger but Judy was the best skater. My other favorites: Candi Mitchell, B J Petersen. Little Richard Brown was hands down the greatest/ best skater of all time, Larry lewis next, Danny Riley [The Great] was The most entertaining and one of my favorites also. Also, Judy Sowinski went on to live in Philadelphia with her husband and later died there. She was right up there with Judy Arnold.
My favorites were mike gammon and diane severson.
@@richardmadison6312 yes, Gammon was awesome, forgot about him , he was the fastest skater in derby, his speed matched Richard and Larry Lewis. Yes Severson was awesome and fun to watch too.
Her name was Madeline Donlin😄
cavello pre-dates tan mom. actually very loveable though.
Yup😇Big time!
Ann Calvello NEVER won a fight with Joanie Weston. Weston was a better skater as well.
Between you and me--shhh, most of the fights, particularly with the Roller Games, weren't "on-the-level" if you get me. I won't say nothin' if you don't. ;}
LMAO! I talked to Joanie several times when she had a Arts and Crafts booth at our local Fair Grounds and when i asked about Calvello she laughed so hard saying it was ALL put on just like the WWE. Anything for ticket sales.
we knew in Philly, but it was so much fun. judy Arnold was the best.
@@Etnalleb O don’t think anyone could’ve really won a fight with Weston but Judy Arnold was the all around best of the female skaters in both leagues.
You can plainly see that when Ann Calvello and her teammates attacked an opponent (like Yolanda Trevino and Judy Arnold), they did it with love and kid gloves. Say what you will about Roller Games being as fake as a $3 bill, it was much more amusing and spectacular than Roller Derby, especially in the last days.
