I know that hard landings can lead to a bounce or two - but if it's a long runway , would you not rather just be back on the ground ? When did this start becoming the norm (80's - 90's 🤔) and is it more for heavier commerical aircraft who need a longer runway (I mean, would you do that sort of go-around in a Cessna) ?

      The plane landed way too close to the threshold, that is not considered normal nor a good practice, with transport category aircraft. Not an efficient landing, smooth yes, safe no.

    • @jimgw
      @jimgw Před 28 dny +3

      Yes it’s not normal, but it is trained and perfectly safe if correctly planned, briefed and executed. Only runways with 3D /Precision approaches have touchdown markers anyway.
      Landing on the piano keys or numbers is fine and sometimes necessary for landing performance. All runways have a clearway before the threshold. Very embarrassing to land on the touchdown marks 300m into the runway and then go off the end!
      Also if you look carefully at the edge lights he is not actually that close to the end of the runway, it’s the foreshortening of the zoom lens giving that illusion.

      He landed on the overrun which can be softer than the operational runway, to help stop a plane coming from the other direction, if needed. Also, you notice he didn't use his reverse thrusters until he rolled onto the landing zone, typically 1000 ft from the end, as that could break up the overrun.

    I like the clips but sometimes titles are a bit click-baity. The first plane was very close to the end of the runway but did not "land too short". Also, I saw no duct tape. The stuff is good but asking it to hold on at the air speed and temperature of a flight seems ... well ... optimistic. I think we are seeing bare metal.

    There is nothing wrong with the 787! It is normal to loosen the "scales" on wings made of carbon fiber. It is not unsafe and is provided for in the aircraft manual. Stop alarmism!
