This show has one of the best religious commentary I've seen in any story ever. Usually religion is portrayed in a very simplified way in movies, books and TV shows. It either serves as a way to mock characters or just make a scene more emotional by adding symbolisms. This show portrays religion as something more complex than just blind faith, it shows how beautiful and interesting it can be if you look deeper. I'm personally non-religious myself, and the fact that I'm praising this aspect of a show is a testament of how great writing is here. I was actually happy to see Matt regain his faith.

@@Nobody-fb7ni that them opens the question of what is art? If some person of skill makes a thing, and doesn't pour their heart into it, then are they not just acting mechanically, and should be replaced by a machine? If then that person allows their humanity to leak into their work, does it not start to become a reflection of their own self? I offer you the work of the Shakers as example... Skilled woodworkers who have made some of the most beautiful and durable pieces of functional furniture, intended to be used every day. Their beliefs leaked in... They believed that using laminate was a lie. They believed in durable function, not vanity. They built solid wood drawer bottoms where anyone else would have used laminated sheets. They used less attractive cuts of more durable species in the runners. The art of their pieces shows their true beliefs. Or perhaps we need to look at the larger definition of propoganda, and not the specific ugly meaning it usually carries.

The reason I feel the generosity part should not be added, is because even at this stage, the "my mother abandoned me for the sake of religion and what-not" fact was still raw.
The way I see it, Matt was still reaching new heights of maturity, in this scene, and in this season... in a way.

I think what’s so good about how they tackled religion in this season is how it’s not portrayed as just good or evil. We’re human and because of that it’s complex. Someone like Matt who was religious for two whole seasons begins to struggle with religion and his beliefs and even at the end he knows that religion isn’t perfect.

Does she ever find out that he overheard she's his mum? At the end of this scene he could of said "you're also my mother". Unless it's in another ep

3:37 I suppose that's the closest that these two will come at this point to acknowledge each other as mother and son. Maggie is willing to be a counselor for Matt, but I don't think that's her way of saying she is ready to acknowledge that she is his mother emotionally. And as for Matt, I think he recognizes this and doesn't want to push and yet needs this connection. Wants to build a gradually and get over the resentment and anger that he may still feel towards both Maggie and Father Lantom for keeping this from him. They both did, after all, save his life after the building collapsed on him, and helped him recover. The emotional trauma, however, will take a lot longer than that. But I think this is a promising start.

She was struggling with her guilt and thought he would be better off not knowing her as the woman who abandoned him. She put herself above his needs, and felt a twinge of regret for it, but after a while she felt it was too late and kept up the charade.
