In this video I go through step by step what to do to calculate the length of a hip, then a common rafter, and then the area of the roof. You can use this area information to work out how many tiles you need to order, and get the right amount of battens and felt.
The difficulty with a hipped roof is that the hips slope in two different directions at the same time. So even if you have a CAD drawing, there is no way to measure it. Here I show you a method using simple maths (Pythagoras), to keep things simple and do the calculation easily.

Hip member length could also be found by extending pythagoras in three directions sqrt(4^2+4^2+3^2). Without the intermediate result of 5.66 m, this yields 6.4031, meaning an almost 3 mm shorter member. If you are standing by the saw it would be nice to know about those millimetres.

Great video. You spot the 3,4,5 triangle so just need to pick out the 4, and 5, all easy after that. So does 345 give the most pleasing hip roof? I'm going to start looking at Georgian hips now 😁. Thanks again.

How would you calculate hip length if one end of roof is splayed, i.e the triangle is not symmetrical?
    Thank you.

Just found out this channel! I wonder if you could do a video talking about A-frames (triangular cabins), and how their structure works. I've seen frames where the loft is just supported by a collar tie (is that the right name), and wonder if that's correct, or if it would cause the rafters to sag due to the loft weight...

Nice video. I'm a retired QS and one that also taught 'measurement' at degree level. Hipped roofing calcs were always enjoyable to lecture due to the inherent quirks of hipped roofing. You have a nice video there and the only comments I could offer is that although not impossible it would be rare to find a hipped roof with different pitch angles at the hip ends and so, very generally, when viewed from above (plan view) the hip angle on plan is ALWAYS 45 degrees - which can be useful to know. Also, when considering the TOTAL roof area it may seem that a series of complicated and separate calcs would have to be made - ie 8 triangles plus 2 rectangles - but this is not true. The hips can, actually, be totally ignored and the whole roof reconsidered as a simple, standard, 'gable-ended' roof, enabling the simple calc of one of the pitch rectangles x2 (for both pitches) using the length of the roof x slope length x 2.........the area is exactly the same as a hipped alternative. Also, dependant upon one's own individual feeling about maths, the use of Secants (instead of trig) can simplify roof calcs significantly if you are happy to go down that route. Personally I never did as I was always a trig and pythag fan due to what else you could make them do for you 🙂👍

Hi, can a boundary gutter be added to a pitch roof like this?

    Hi Robin,
Been a great fan of your channel for a while now. Im a builder and am currently looking into what qualifications i would have to be looking at to do calculations myself for timber frame construction. Any advice in which direction to head would be Awsome thankyou and keep up the videos 👍

Hi Robert. That's a great question! I'm afraid there should be an easy answer but there isn't. College and university suck at giving you practical design skills. Send me an email ✉️

Not how a carpenter does it, he has to calculate the roof components, he does it all with common rafter

I am retired so not too much. Hundreds rather than thousands. All I need to do are plans, sections, elevations and roof detail.
