Malyna Skafidas the case was a fruit art. the kids chose purple first because she didn't know what to do and we could choose what area and that would be that colour. nobody explained and she never said what colour we use first.

I was in fifth grade and I loved anime style eyes. I thought I was good at drawing anime too. then one day we were drawing owls. and I asked the art teacher if we had to do a specific kind of eye. she said no we could do what's kind of eyes we wanted. so I did anime eyes on the owl. when I showed it to her. she said my eyes were stupid. and I was like OK whatever, she doesn't like them. OK. but then the next week on art period, she gave me my owl back with the eyes cut out, and her own drawing of eyes taped into the empty spaces.....tell me that's not messed up!
It is messed up. A good art teacher should embrace a student's creativity, however weird, even if she doesn't like your style.

I remember back in grade 6 the art teacher assigned everyone a task to draw anime. I instantly knew this was my moment to shine, all my hard work will finally be acknowledged. She teaches everyone how to draw anime however I was already far too confident so I decided to begin drawing. So she’s complimenting people’s drawings and their versions of anime and at one point she stands next to me and looks directly at my drawing and her first words were... “aren’t the eyes meant to be bigger?” I felt so betrayed because my ego was getting larger when everyone was complimenting it and as soon as she criticised it I felt like she sucked out my soul. So I did exactly what she said and made them larger and let me tell you, it looked absolutely horrifying. I cri

My art teachers always told me that if I’m not happy with my art I have to change it until I’m happy or otherwise it’s not even worth creating. I actually got in trouble one time because they could literally see the unhappiness and discontent in my art
Thats good, because only the art teachers or people involved in art will know how we feel when we have to use an artstyle people say we should. But its art. For me, i associate art with freedom. So your art teachers are actully TEACHERS. Those are rare.
So familiar! I've also experienced narrow minded art teachers who discourage your own style and want you to conform with everyone else's. That's not teaching. You're very lucky you had Miss BAMF.
The weird thing is, you find so many of these conformist teachers in the one subject that's always been about non-conformity.

That is very true. I mean I understand teachers want to teach us techniques but sometimes it's better to just do something and learn from experience. Mine was even worse because he was forgetful and if he assigned us something he would tell us "don't worry about the due date" and then the next day ask us to hand it over -_- That or he would forget we did stuff and we would work really hard on it and he would be like "ok that assignment won't be graded".

It's definitely important to experiment with other art styles, but it sounds like that teacher wasn't encouraging at all, which is terrible! The way to push a student beyond their comfort zone is to offer constructive criticism, not totally diss their drawing.

+Korin The thing is, you're mostly right. She WAS doing her job, and Domics even acknowledged that she did have a point. However, the point is that everyone has their own style, and since it was a personal sketchbook, the artist can show who they are through it. But Mrs. Holly was disrespecting the way Domics drew his art style and made him more discouraged about taking art in the first place. In a way, she is attacking him as a person because their preferences do not match up.
Since it's a personal sketchbook, he's meant to experiment with style anyway. As you learn more art, your style changes with it, just like how Domics did. You don't have to learn the basics AND the style separately.
Basically, you can teach people art, but you can also be nicer and respectful about it, too. Keep yo' class.
+Korin I have to disagree when you say you "have" to. It helps, but a artist can learn all those things through other styles. Especially those who practice an anime style, that if someone puts time into it, can learn proper lighting, perspectives, ect, ect.
Though once again I will say that learning basics of realism MAY help ( it depends on the individual), but ultimately shouldn't be required.
Korin We'll have to agree to disagree, it purely depends on the individual. You don't have to be "special", you just need to take the time to learn, understand, and practice those things. The style you use doesn't matter, you're putting just as much work into understand the fundamentals as you would through realism. And saying which is better would be subjective because they're different styles and harder to compare.
I'm not a talented or "special" artist, and never will. My art is mediocre at best, but I still understand these fundamentals and can put them into action.

Once again, it depends on the individual, it clicks for some, but not for some too. It also works the other way around! Where other styles it doesn't click. Its just how people work.
My middle school art teacher was possibly the worst art teacher I ever had. I was still figuring out my style and I wasn't very flexible and acrylic paint was not a friend of mine. So clearly, the whole year, it must have seemed I wasn't very artistic or by her standards "good" but I was okay with that. What I wasn't okay with though was when we were painting with water color and i laid down my pencil sketch, she came over and she said, "who drew this for you?"
No one. No one drew it for me. I drew it myself.
The whole year I seemed incapable of art and really, I was okay with it because I wasn't trying to prove my skills to anyone, I was there for myself.

My art teacher in middle school, whom I'll call him Mr. Chill, told us to free draw on the first day. I drew magical animal hybrid girls similar to Tokyo Mew Mew (which I look back at the art and face-palm at it) and showed it to him. He was like, "I've had a kid once who loved drawing cartoon characters, but he didn't focus well on the concepts in the lessons. It's great to draw stuff like cartoon animals or anime characters, but don't let that consume you in art."

For me, I was good at drawing, painting, etc. but for some reason just couldn't get the hang of pastels as easily. It was so frustrating at the time. I would be like "WHY am I not good at this???!" lol
I’m starting art class as my first period tomorrow. Because of the pandemic, all my classes are online. It’s a new school and I don’t know pretty much anyone. It’s 8th grade btw. It goes ( kinder-5) grade school, 6-7 (middle school), 8-9 (mid high), then high school. Also I don’t know anyone because I’m military, and moved here in the 7th grade. Wish me luck!

I had a teacher in middle school tell me me drawing anime was copying and nothing i drew in anime style was original in any way. I had that nagging voice of her over me all the time and i was always trying to change it up to impress her. Me and her would argue like crazy at school. She refused to let me draw anything with a hint of anime in it. SO one day i made my holy grail of a picture....the lady took it and looked at it for 2 seconds and ripped it up. I freaked and got sent to the office for "disrupting class". Once I got to my Jr year of high school she got hired and I HATED the shit out of her. But we were in a Charter school which had different ways of thinking and her personality got her fired. However my art teacher I gained was this hippie guy who loved anime and really liked breaking down Gibli films for animation classes and his kids went to anime conventions. He even asked me for anime suggestions. Like what!? He gave me much confidence and lots of strength. I really owe him one.

Paula Gonzalez my old art teacher used to do that with everyone's drawings at my school, so most people used to just rub out what she did then re draw what they had done. Thankfully that teacher is gone although we did get a really creepy temporary art teacher while they were trying to find a new one

the art teacher i currently have is really laid back. she doesn’t care what your art is like as long as you put effort in, and she always makes sure to assign projects with different materials so if jimmy is good at painting but bad at drawing he doesn’t have to worry because she will assign drawing and painting and then average the scores out :D
my first art teacher was a bitch. I had several characters I put a lot of time into, and I drew them a lot, and almost every time I drew one of them she would say something to the effect of "Those characters of yours look mentally disabled." or "Why do you keep drawing those creepy monsters?" and I was so glad when she moved to a different state and let me draw my characters. I still have them today and every now and then I send her a sketch just to say "FU my characters are the sh*t"

When I first started drawing I would draw nothing but cats, most likely due to the influence of reading the entire Warrior cats series, but anime changed that habit. When I got into anime I started to see humans in a new light since I usually despised humans and turned to cats, so I began to just constantly doodle characters in the anime style. And though i'm still not great at it, my skills at humans improved drastically thanks to the motivation given to me by anime.

I actually think the first teacher seemed pretty nice. Despite not caring for your style she asked you to design the school yearbook. I assume she didn't ask the other students in the art class.
Constructive criticism is something you need to be able to handle in art, and it is her job to teach you that.
Agree much. Criticism, especially the constructive ones, should be taken as something that is inevitable when you are an artist, painter, or any of the like.
The thing is, Based on the chosen word choice, I get the impression the teacher wasn't providing constructive criticism. Rather, she was just criticizing the art based on its Style because she didn't like. Of course not everyone is going to like all styles, but that doesn't mean its bad. Constructive criticism is good. Nonconstructive criticism is bad.

The issue I'm having with this is that the story is a bit vague.
I understand why though.
He animates theses and, as a beginning animator, I understand how time consuming these can be.

My parents don't let me make subscriptions (the ones that cost money) because we are struggling to make money since some exonomic thing crashed in 2008. They were the part in between for the loans people took from the bank. Symmetry is so boring.
It sounds like you don't do well with criticism. But don't worry it's natural..I think we've all been there. If all they're doing is pointing out things they think could use work in the drawing they're not trying to tell you shouldn't draw. They're trying to be constructive to help you get better. The unmotivation comes from yourself not them. Drawing is fun, but when we start to see it as work it can start to become unfun. If you want to get better at drawing tho you have to have some discipline to work on skills that could be improved on. You can make it a fun journey too. It's super rewarding to see your efforts pay off. Don't get discouraged.
If that doesn't vibe with you then just keep doing what you want. Art is subjective and all that really matters at the end of the day is how you see it. Is it good enough for you? If it is then keep doing it.

One time there was a partner project at my junior high for art and so the one person left was Ethan. I'm like aw shoot. Earlier that year he asked Me to do the sketch up project in Tech for him and I'm like (he does realize that is a third of his tech class work, right?) but he said we could be partners and I'm like alright. The biggest mistake he asked for me to fix was deleting his entire project. Anyway, in art he was the last person so I said why don't we make a sketch for each of us and we decide who's is better to finish? We were supposed to make posters with a positive message and so I finish up mine and it turns out he finished early! You know those things that kindergarteners draw where there are like rectangles for everything and the hands are circles with 5 sticks? That's. What. He. Drew. He was smiling and I'm like (oh shit he's actually serious! This is his best.) and I never work with Ethan anymore after we decided to finish mine.

I myself am trying to find my drawing style and when I moved to a new city I hoped my art teacher would help me improve on how I draw.
But nope.
I really don't think she knows ANYTHING about art, because at the start of the lessons she just goes "Yeah, draw something from Picasso".
And I'm just sitting there wondering how that woman could be an actual teacher.
Most of the time she isn't in the classroom anyway, sits silently on a chair or checks Facebook while we have class. ._.
One time two of my classmates (who aren't really good at drawing, no hate.) sat next to each other and one was like "Hey, you're drawing's not that bad, can I copy it?". And he takes the drawing and copies it. My art teacher was wandering around telling kids whether their drawings were good or bad and not trying to tell them what's good or what's bad. Anyway, she saw the dude who was copying and said "Gimme that". She takes the drawing of the other person and rips it. The one who was the "owner" of the drawing was so devastated that he started crying and my teacher didn't give a fuck.

I remember about maybe 2 years ago now, I showed my art teacher what I did in class. She really liked it. A year later, with another teacher, I showed her my style. Now, like Domics, I use the anime style. I showed her, and she told me 'this is great, I'd love to see this more when you do class work.' Later, with that same teacher, she gave us some work to do, and she turned to me and said in front of the whole class (there was about 30 of us) 'this is like the anime style, so you'll like it.' I don't know why, but, I was so embarrassed. But, looking back on it, I realised that I didn't really have a reason to be embarrassed it was probably because some of the people in that class bullied me. Now, I take my sketch book with me to school and show my art teacher. She really likes it and told me to keep it up!
Aha, I know that feel. When someone just announces something you like in front of everyone, even when you know it shouldn't get to you that much- I always thought it was the tone they say it in...
The only difference is that I don't draw anime, even though some people actually mistake it for that- just because it's a style with big eyes doesn't mean it's animu~ :)

I'm an art teacher! i was a school teacher for years then got sick so had to stop teaching. I do art professionally now and i run my own classes for small groups of young folks after school on the side cos i miss teaching mainly lol. I have always enjoyed DBZ and studio ghibli especially, but didnt know much about Anime outside of the stereotypes and intersectional history with western animation. But when i had a student who was obsessed with anime i went online and watched some docos and tutorials about the techniques and history of the style so i could critique their personal work better. honestly, when it comes to art i tell my kids there will always be someone worse than you at it, someone better than you at it, but never someone who is you. your experience, vision, passions etc are all intertwined in your art and how you choose to express it, im here to help you do that THE BEST way you can do it, who cares if it's a different style- its not about the final art produced- as a teacher its about the influence and teaching that you do with the student, so they are equipped to continue making their best art throughout their lives. People will move on from styles and trends and eventually find their own style, but one should never suppress a students artistic voice just cos they dont appreciate the tone. I'm glad you overcame the negativity!
