    Any info on tool and cutter grinding is appreciated. The effort you have put in to the gear cutting shows a passion for engineering worth sharing

      Thanks for the feedback! I've next weeks video under construction on cutting the helical gear, then I might do a video on my setup for sharpening endmills.

    Thank you very much for taking the time to share this. I also have an Elliot 10M and this really inspires me to broaden its use.

    This series of videos on gear cutting on a shaper is fantastic and very informative, great job Robert, the only thing that I don't understand yet is the spreadsheet of calculations. I have a 16 inch European shaper and a universal dividing head that mainly get used for keyway/ spline cutting so this will be something else to look at doing.

    • @ThePottingShedWorkshop
      @ThePottingShedWorkshop  Před měsícem

      Thank you. I'm glad you found it useful, thats why I finally got round to making a video on it! If you have a 16" shaper that will be able to accomodate a fixture like this with ease. The spreadsheet isn't that complicated, it just saves lots of manual calculations. The most complicated part of it is finding the right gear combination to synthesise the gear ratio needed, but there are online calculators which can help with that. If you do decide to try to build a fixture like this and need help with the calculations, please ask!

      @@ThePottingShedWorkshop Thanks for the reply Robert, I had a look at my dividing head yesterday and found that it is a Semi Universal type and therefore not suitable for this application, I am now on the lookout for another one.

    @ThePottingShedWorkshop thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise in gear cutting and precise machining of parts. Your presentation is very detailed and easy to understand even though I must admit that it does not come to my imagination that a shaper can be used to cut Spur Gear more so a Helical Gear. It really amazed me. Your kindness is much appreciated. I am now one of your avid subscriber. From Philippines

      Thank you very much for your comments. The next video will give you visual proof that a shaper can cut a helical gear!

    Very nice work on this setup. I've done the same over the years. On one job I cut a large pinion on a shaper with a setup just like yours. I think it was a 3/4 stub with 14 teeth. I remember I cut the nose thread of the dividing head into the gear blank to save space. In another episode I set my universal Milling machine to hob a run of gears.

      Thanks! If there's one thing I'd like to change about my milling machine, it would be to have a universal. The trouble is, the videos don't show just how tightly packed the workshop is!

    You have built so many amazing things to complete this project....but I think I love the U joints the most...that's a fantastic idea I may need to remember that ...

      Thanks. Glad it's of use. I'd never made universal joints before this. They're just so ridiculously expensive to buy decent quality ones and this attachment does put quite a bit of torque through them!

    Hi Robert, as a 10 M owner myself I am really enjoying this series. I also have a Kennet T& C grinder so would find a series on tool grinding equally interesting. thanks for sharing.

    Very nice work! I really enjoyed the previous video but it's getting better and better. Cutting a helical gear with such a 'basic' cutting tool is the exact opposite of the complexity of the gear train.
    I'm waiting for the next video! Again well done

      Hi Matty, glad you like it. I've been following your channel for quite a while. Like you I always aim for that "nice" finish. In my case I can blame the 25 years spent woodturning before I took the plunge and bought a metal lathe.

    Absolutely marvellous. Do you think this setup might fit the Boxford 8” shaper.

    • @ThePottingShedWorkshop
      @ThePottingShedWorkshop  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Quite possibly. As long as you mount a big enough baseplate to the table to accomodate the smallest universal dividing head you can find, thats the limiting factor. I only used about 2 inches of stroke on the ram so an 8" one will be fine.

    Gday,, what kind of mill are you using? love the trick to remove keys! all those tools in that drawer were made by you??? love the uni joint. i imagine you are a machinist of some sort? waiting for the next bit,,, cheers.👍👍👍

      Thanks for watching!
      My mill is an Elliott model 00, probably older than I am! The drawer contains both stuff I've made and the gears and extra dividing plate that came with the dividing head.
      I'm not a machinist by trade, I was an electronic design engineer for 40 years, but have worked in my youth in a cycle repair shop and for a bicycle frame builder.

    Hi,Robert. This shaper gear cutting is all really interesting content. I think I've mentioned previously that i own an Alba 1A(the predecessor to your Elliot 10M) so all this content is very relevant to my own shaper.
    Is the tool & cutter grinder a Union brand machine? If so that will be of great interest to a close friend of mine as he is currently restoring one of those.

    • @ThePottingShedWorkshop
      @ThePottingShedWorkshop  Před 5 měsíci

      Glad you enjoyed it. I think the Alba is not much different to a 10M.
      Yes, my TC grinder is a Union, far from perfect but does what I need it to do. I'll do an overview of the machine when I get to the video.

    Just found your channel. Very nice work with the design and build of the attachments needed to complete gear cutting. I am in the process of building a hybrid mill (Harrison with a Beaver head) I have hade to recon far more parts than anticipated but the result should be good. I will need to get a spur gear replaced would you be interested in making one for me as you seem to be very knowledgeable in this subject?
    Regards Jon

      Hi Jon,
      Thanks for your comments. I don't consider myself very knowledgeable about gears, I've just done a fair bit of reading and made a few. It's a complicated subject .
      Yes, I would be prepared to look at what you need making. You can find an email address in the "more about this channel" section. Send me a mail with some details and we can start discussing it. I just don't want to promise something I can't deliver.
      Cheers, Robert
