First time with you. Always been a fan of shortbread. If someone doesn't want to use butter they don't understand shortbread. Shortbread is one of the best vehicles for butter. Thanks.
@@LetsCelebrateTV No sir. Thank you. I feel like baking again and in time for the holiday season. It's tough this season to do things for others while trying to be safe and baking is rewarding on many levels. As short and simple to prepare as it is combined with how good it seems it could be perfect with my coffee every morning. If the first turns out as I expect I'll be making a number of them. There isn't anything like fresh baked goodies.
Hello from bonny Scotland, you can't beat shortbread, my mother's was amazing and I have wonderful memories of her making it at least once a week and watching her prick it with a fork, that's an important step, the wonderful smell that came from the kitchen I couldn't wait to have a piece straight from the oven, and at Christmas she would make it for friends and neighbours, my mum used half flour half rice flour and caster sugar, always sprinkling the sugar over the hot shortbread as soon as it came out if the oven. I've just made a batch today and more to make for my family tomorrow they love it. I enjoyed your video. Merry Xmas 🍸🎅🎄
Thank you Shirley! Those memories of our mothers making Shortbread are very precious indeed, and as different as recipes might be, the tradition is always the same! Have a Merry Christmas!
Thank you for sharing your family recipe and memories. I first had shortbread cookies in school in Hawaii in the 50's (I wonder if it was a legacy from the missionaries). I used a recipe similar to yours to make shortbread for my daughter in the 70s. I believe it came from an old home ec textbook. Your video has inspired me to teach my great-granddaughter how to make shortbread for Valentine's Day.
This video is our most popular to date with over 105,000+ views. It was done in our main kitchen before we build the studio kitchen in the basement. It is simple to follow and we have had many of our viewers make them and leave us pictures in the Facebook group 🍸🥂
As I was watching your video, I suddenly smiled when you were introduced to shortbread. I first (and last) tasted it when my fiance' had his dad bring gifts for me last Christmas 2019. His dad was here because he got married to a Filipina. I could still remember the smile that was brought by that "milky"/ "creamy" biscuit as how I described it before. And now I am looking for a recipe that would allow me to relive that moment when I first tasted it. Baking is fun and it is more fun if you make a lot of tasty things for yourself and for your loved ones. I'd surely try this one. Thank you very much. 😊😊😊
Thank you for sharing that amazing story. Please let us know when you make it how it turned out and if it brought back more memories. Welcome to LCTV 🍸🍸
I just found the “shortbread pan” like your mother’s at a thrift store. I’ve heard of shortbread but never made it. I came across your recipe while searching CZcams. After watching several recipes, I think yours looks and sounds the best. I will make it and let you know how it turns out. I’m sure it will be delicious.
When you pulled out the Martini, I immediately subscribed to your channel! This episode popped up because I looked up shortbread recipes today. It's Summer, so I added the zest of a lemon in it. Wow, it tastes good. I bought my shortbread pan a couple years ago and it's square, with nine individual shortbreads instead of eight triangular wedges. My pan is decorated with floral patterns, so is great for "year-round" baking. I am looking forward to seeing more of your videos. Cheers
Bless you and your late mumma. I'm sure she was a great teacher. Your recipe is traditional. Love your presentation. I wish you well and look forward to seeing you make some more Christmas treats this year for 2022
I don’t know if you are aware of the ‘First Footing’ tradition in Scotland. It is that the first person to cross your threshold after the bells (the stroke of midnight from Hogmanay into New Years Day) would bring a lump of coal, something to drink (usually whisky) and something to eat (usually shortbread) as a wish of health and prosperity for the coming year to the household. So as a Scot, this and my my Mum making it are always my first thoughts when shortbread is mentioned and in the U.K. in general I think that shortbread very much screams Hogmanay.
Thank you! Yes, I know of the tradition, though I didn't know thats what it was called. My grandfather was from Scotland and he spoke it. I think its a wonderful thing!
My mother was a workhorse in the kitchen. Baked and baked for weeks during the holiday season and stored them in the freezer. I could never replicate her recipes to the tee. I miss her so much.
Thanks so much for posting your mother's shortbread recipe. I've made it several times and it's been a hit with all my family and friends. I just sent a link of your video to my cousins who really enjoyed it too.

I have found that other than people adding "flavorings" that the only main difference is "sugar". Some use regular (caster) sugar and some use confectioners (powered) sugar. I prefer the consistency you get from confectioners sugar. 🍸🍸

Thank you very much for the measurements that I could understand. I got measurements before, but its in grams which I do not understand. Now I can try my short bread. THANK YOU.
Love this rcipe! Ii mmmake these for cookie echanges. I useea stad mixer, let's me continue with arthritis. Still awesome results. I have round molds to make petticoat shapes and also individual shape and design molds for all seasons and subjects. Lots of fun results.
I definitely shall make this as a wonderful dessert, I sometimes put a whole meal together for my family events and lots of other people that I work with get a whole meal too. almost like catering, so yes a "simple" to make/do recipe is always a win for me when I've got to preplan and cook several dishes.

@@LetsCelebrateTV My mothers recipe is similar and it worked so will give it a go. What could go wrong, lol....will do a couple just to test and if not will roll it out and use cookie cutter as do not have one of those beautiful shortbread ceramic with stamps. Thanks for getting back. Love your channel. Merry Christmas.
I appreciate that you have converted to the measurements of the ingredients into grams. We Europeans have no idea what a "cup" or a "stick" actually weighs. Thank you 😊 The shortbread looking delicious 😋 Can ask you why you didn't use Castor Sugar?
Thank you! Yes we have a big UK audience, so a couple years ago we started including the metric measurements as well. I find the confectioners sugar makes a more tender shortbread. And, because it has cornstarch in it, I don't have to use rice flour, which many recipes include. Thank you for watching!
@@LetsCelebrateTV Interesting. Is the confectionery sugar used to make icing for cake decorating? Sorry, I'm just trying to understand what "confectionery sugar" is, as we don't have this here. Thank you
Yes, as I understand it, it's about the same as icing sugar in the UK. Castor sugar for you is similar to our granulated sugar. I could use regular, granulated sugar, but I find the confections sugar, or icing sugar, incorporates easier into the the dough, which gives a more tender result than castor or regular sugar.
I've just made this following your recipe, and, as a self promoted Amazing English Cook.. I've added this to my "Great Food" playlist! Thank you. It's even better than Delia's recipe ( and in England.. Nobody beats Delia Smith.. haha) xx
I can't thank you enough, spread the word so we can get more viewers from UK. and for what is it worth, my husband was born and raised in Hove/Brighton. 🍸🍸
I love shortbread and have made it myself several times but used granulated sugar. This is my first time using powdered sugar. I haven't pulled it out of the oven yet. It has 3 minutes to go on the 30 minutes and I'm just now able to smell it. My grandkids will be with me over the weekend and I know this won't make it past lunch time on Saturday LOL. A few times in the past when I made shortbread I've drizzled chocolate on top and its a lot like those little elves cookies, fudge strip. I just know this is going to be my go-to recipe from now on. Thanks for sharing the recipe as well as the bit about your dear mother. I just found your channel and have subscribed.
Technically powered sugar is not in the traditional recipe, but I was introduced to it that way from my mother. Having done it both ways, I prefer the texture with powdered sugar.
I know this is the 3rd time you have done shortbread, but this is the best version ever. Your video quality is great and I love the nod to your Mother with the Martini.
Thank you, we are constantly learning, getting better at filming and significantly better at editing. Its a learning process, but we are committed to keep going..... and at the end of the day it is still fun.

Well I made my first shortbreas using the recipe from this video and enjoy it very much. May make shortbread more offen. However I did add a teaspoon of vanilla and if was still enjoyable. Wonder why some prick holes in their shortbread while this recipe did not need it. Anyway looking forward to buying shortbread pans. Thanks for sharing!
I have been looking for this recipe. I used to make it years ago for my kids. The only ones I could find on line had things like rice flour and other things I didn't want. The only difference is the sugar. I used to use faster sugar which is fine than normal sugar but coarser than jcing( confectioners) sugar. I will be making it your way as my daughter is visiting from Scotland!!! ( I live near Gatwick airport uk😀 I know where I've been going rong. It's that martini !!!!
I wish you had variations such as chocolate, fine ground almonds/ almond extract, ginger/molasses. I would like to make all three and slice them and present all three varing the slices in the same box. I have the same creamic mould!
Although some people do make variations, My preference is the original with nothing but the 4 ingredients. Make some and let us know how they came out. Post some pictures in our Facebook group. facebook/letscelebratetv
Thank you Peter, for the recipe shared. i'll surely try it out. i noticed you didnt add cornstarch like other shortbread videos i watched. kindly tell me if it's really necessary to add cornstarch and the reason some people use it
Some recipes call for cornstarch, as it has no gluten, to help keep the shortbread softer and use less flour. I achieve this same thing by using confectioners sugar which does a better job and makes for a better texture. 🍸🍸
Confectioners sugar or icing sugar, contains cornstarch or cornflour as we call it outside the US. As stated it keeps the dough "short" ie: not chewy. Many old recipes contain rice flour for the same reason
Lovely! Now... you've promised to show your shortbread recipe and method EACH year, so have you not put up this year's video for 2020? We do need some inspiration these days! Thanks you!
We have done 3 of them so far, but this one we created in 2019 is special since I featured the story and picture of my mother. Since that video was created, it has been the #1 on our channel and continues to grow. So for now, I am not messing with my mother 😜😜
You’ve inspired me to use a ceramic pan that I’ve had for years and never used! If I wanted to make black sesame shortbread, do I just add some ground black sesame seeds or would I substitute some of the flour with the ground seeds?
I have never heard of black sesame seeds in shortbread, but a quick scan of Google shows lots of recipes. It looks like they just add them into the dough. 🍸🍸
Its 1:16 am for me and mine is baking as I type. 10 more minutes and I check the color. I can hardly wait. I sure wouldn't want to have to wait 3 more months to make a batch. October seems like a good enough month as any LOL. My grandkids will be with me tomorrow evening and spend the weekend so I know it won't last long at all.
I've seen recipes that call for adding corstarch. But the confectioners sugar we have here in the US has cornstarch in it, so I find I don't need to add it.
Would it be against the rules to personalize this with diced Craisens, dried apricot, dried nectarine, or mini chocolate chips? I do use these very successfully in scones but this would be easier to make in volume.
@@LetsCelebrateTV I've melted chocolate and drizzled it on top of a shortbread making it similar to those little elves cookies from Keebler, I believe their called fudge stripped cookies. My grandkids just love them. 1 batch will maybe last till bedtime 🤣
New sub👍🏼 What a lovely recipe! I am making this tomorrow, trial run for Christmas. I hope I can do your mom’s recipe justice☺️ I have one of those ceramic pans you showed. I will make it by hand too rather than a mixer. I prefer that. I’ll let you know how I get on😊 One question, we use centigrade temp here in Uk. I have a fan oven. What temp should I preheat my oven to? Thank you!
We created this video years ago before we gained an international audience. In the show description we added all the metric conversions. Here they are: 1 cup (2 sticks) softened butter (225 g) 2 cups flour (270 g) 3/4 cup confectioners sugar (115 g) 1/8 tsp salt (or less if using salted butter) (pinch) Preheat oven to 325°F. (165°C)

I definitely shall make this as a wonderful dessert, I sometimes put a whole meal together for my family events and lots of other people that I work with get a whole meal too. almost like catering, so yes a "simple" to make/do recipe is always a win for me when I've got to preplan and cook several dishes.
Thank you! Yes, please make it and post pictures on our Facebook page
Thank you so much ❤
You're welcome 😊
I'll be trying these. ----maybe with a vod. martini.
Post a picture on our Facebook page!
My son bought me one like you had in the box. I've been going to make me some shortbread but just haven't done it. I love shortbread.
Make it and send us pictures and let us know how it turs out. Thanks for watching!

What a great recipe. I am going to try and use a cookie press ...i think it might work.
I have never had much luck with that as the dough is very thick and heavy. Let us know if it works out 🍸
@@LetsCelebrateTV My mothers recipe is similar and it worked so will give it a go.
Thank you 😊
The shortbread looking delicious 😋
Can ask you why you didn't use Castor Sugar?
Thank you! Yes we have a big UK audience, so a couple years ago we started including the metric measurements as well. I find the confectioners sugar makes a more tender shortbread. And, because it has cornstarch in it, I don't have to use rice flour, which many recipes include. Thank you for watching!
@@LetsCelebrateTV
Interesting.
Looks delicious thank you! 👏👍😊
Thank you so much 🍸🍸
Your nod to your Mom was great, my Mom also used to make shortbread, but hers was more of a cake like than a cookie like.
@Bill Baxter - isn't that where we learn most of our kitchen skills 🍸🍸
Hi! Thank you for sharing I will try these cookies in the morning. My first time seeing you Peter. Take care 😃
Thank you, hope to see you in more videos .
🥰Thank you 👍Great recipe ❤Aug . 19 , 2024

Thanks for watching 🍸🥂
Wow yummy
Thanks, welcome to LCTV 🍸🍸
I know this is the 3rd time you have done shortbread, but this is the best version ever. Your video quality is great and I love the nod to your Mother with the Martini.
Thank you, we are constantly learning, getting better at filming and significantly better at editing. Its a learning process, but we are committed to keep going..... and at the end of the day it is still fun.
I love your video, you made it simple and fun😂👌🏽
Me and your mom would be great friends 😂. Thanks for sharing this recipe

I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
Okay thank you for your response and will let you know how it turns out I will also be doing your original version. 🍻 merry 🎄 christmas
Can't wait!🍸
@@LetsCelebrateTV okay then thks merry Christmas 🌲 🌳 🍻 👏
I have been looking for this recipe. I used to make it years ago for my kids. The only ones I could find on line had things like rice flour and other things I didn't want. The only difference is the sugar. I used to use faster sugar which is fine than normal sugar but coarser than jcing( confectioners) sugar. I will be making it your way as my daughter is visiting from Scotland!!! ( I live near Gatwick airport uk😀 I know where I've been going rong. It's that martini !!!!
Thank you for watching. Let me know how it comes out. Cheers!
Ty I will
Let us know how it came out. 🍸🍸
I have the second style of pan you showed. Would like to see you demo using the Sassafras pan. I want to make this shortbread.
Let us know how it turns out 🍸🍸
I wish you had variations such as chocolate, fine ground almonds/ almond extract, ginger/molasses.
Could you roll this dough out and make individual cookies? Thx! Can’t wait to try this!
You can, though you may need to add a little more flour and I would chill it a bit first. Thanks!
@@LetsCelebrateTV Thanks! I am just now discovering how much I love shortbread!! Gonna make some today! Loved your video!
@@maryhill6710 Let us know how it came out. 🍸🍸
@@LetsCelebrateTV
Oh my!! I’m hooked!! Love these so much!! Gonna have to run and extra mile to work em off!!
Thanks for getting back to us how it turned out. Think of it as reward food. Walk 2 miles, then eat a piece when you get back. 🍸🍸
@@LetsCelebrateTV ok thank you. I'll give your recipe a try.
Confectioners sugar or icing sugar, contains cornstarch or cornflour as we call it outside the US. As stated it keeps the dough "short" ie: not chewy. Many old recipes contain rice flour for the same reason
Can't wait to try this recipe but what kind of flour? Asking from UK as we only have plain & self raising here.
Thanks - it's really easy, just use all purpose flour.
Hi, I used to work in a coffee shop and always used plain flour in shortbread.
@@christinejmcl6727 Thankyou. ❤️
Lovely! Now... you've promised to show your shortbread recipe and method EACH year, so have you not put up this year's video for 2020? We do need some inspiration these days! Thanks you!
We have done 3 of them so far, but this one we created in 2019 is special since I featured the story and picture of my mother. Since that video was created, it has been the #1 on our channel and continues to grow. So for now, I am not messing with my mother 😜😜
@@LetsCelebrateTV yes indeed, let’s not mess with mother! 😆
Absolutely fantastic. Why wait for Christmas?
Thank you!
The Queen's chefs add cornstarch.
Unlike a cake, things inside of the shortbread probably would not work too well. I have seen people take the pieces and dip it in chocolate. 🍸🍸
@@LetsCelebrateTV I've melted chocolate and drizzled it on top of a shortbread making it similar to those little elves cookies from Keebler, I believe their called fudge stripped cookies. My grandkids just love them. 1 batch will maybe last till bedtime 🤣
Traditional Scottish shortbread does not use icing sugar. My grandmother was Scottish and we use her recipe and it’s just white sugar.
I did mention in the video that my *preference* was confectioners sugar for the texture. Caster / regular is fine. 🍸
His apron nicely matches the Grinch.
With the menagerie of stuffed animals in my kitchen, there is always something to match. 🍸🍸
❤️❤️❤️
Thanks 🍸🍸
New sub👍🏼 What a lovely recipe! I am making this tomorrow, trial run for Christmas. I hope I can do your mom’s recipe justice☺️ I have one of those ceramic pans you showed. I will make it by hand too rather than a mixer. I prefer that. I’ll let you know how I get on😊 One question, we use centigrade temp here in Uk. I have a fan oven. What temp should I preheat my oven to? Thank you!
We created this video years ago before we gained an international audience. In the show description we added all the metric conversions. Here they are:
1 cup (2 sticks) softened butter (225 g)
2 cups flour (270 g)
3/4 cup confectioners sugar (115 g)
1/8 tsp salt (or less if using salted butter) (pinch)
Preheat oven to 325°F. (165°C)
@@LetsCelebrateTV Many thanks!😊
