It still blows my mind how technologically advanced this car was... It had air suspension, board computer, radar guided cruise control, fully electric, heated, ventilated, memory, orthopedic seats with massage function, soft close doors, electric trunk, parking sensors and an optional infotainment system. That's right, the W140 had a full color navigation system with voice commands, TV, radio, CD and tape player. You had voice commands, color TV and a full color navigation system in the 90s... in your car!
Most cars in the 90s regarded automatic transmissions and climate control as luxury. Heck, even most cars in 2018 don't have most of the stuff a 90s S-class had!
The W140 even gives today's luxury cars a run for their money.
Amazing car. I love the W140 dearly and will buy an S600 SEL as a weekend car eventually. I want to have this amazing piece of automotive history in my garage.
Didn't have Air ride that came on the next body style
They didn't have pneumatic suspension, but they had the predecessor to the modern ABC suspension.
It is called ADS and includes hydraulic struts with electronically adjustable stiffness. It also changes automatically while driving.
W140 had radar cruise control? I thought that came about on the W220
World first satelite navigation system was in mazda/eunos, with world first touchscreen interface also
Lincoln and Cadillac had those in late 50's.
My dad had this older S Class. I remember when I was a kid, I would love to sit in it and adjust the seat, and even though I didn't remember a lot, I remember how that car looked, and what it meant to me. A memory I will never forget. This car is a legend, and will always have a place in my heart.

My dad also had this car when I was a kid. I remember the first time I saw it, the car looked enormous. He kept it for many years and eventually I was able to drive it as well when I got my drivers license and boy was it a good car to drive. Probably the best car I've ever driven. I miss it so much. Some day I'll buy a second hand one with low mileage and drive around in it for the nostalgia.

its better to see today's tech in old cars than new ones
I love this series of Benz's. I like the fact the body style stayed the same for a long period of time unlike other car makers. I own a 1993 300SE and I love it, the headliner is the best of any car. . I which I had the folding seat this one has. Did not know they existed until now
These cars were ahead of its time and adjustable headrests? Most cars don't even have that. Most of these things are electronic and not manual which makes things easier, true mercedes beauty
I agree, my friend keeps going on and on about his BMW x5, I was like how do you adjust the head rest when I was riding in it because I was so use to my 87 300d and 95 s320. He said by hand. I said "bro and you think BMW is more luxurious than a Benz"

My 1994 Lexus LS400 has electrically height adjustable head rests and seat belts as well - something that I thought is cool :)

This is real luxury, not automatic closing and opening doors, nor a fully electronic dashboard. Just a big comfy safe mercedes. Thats luxury.

I’d always wanted to travel back in time with the newest car, just to see people’s reactions. I mean at the time, this was the best of the best and no one could ever think of ways of improving it. But imagine if you went back to this time in the newest S Class. People’s jaws would drop.

Yup, just imagine how it would be like if you drove in there with some of the beauties we got today like an S-class or maybe with some sportier cars like the R8 or an AMG GT R. No one would get over what it is happening right now and how beautiful and extremely aggressive these cars look, not to mention how loud they are compared to back then, and how fast they drive; just imagine bringing a Porsche 911 GT 2 RS in there or for acceleration maybe a Tesla Roadster 2.

This car will always have a very special place in my heart. Grew up with mom having one, uncle having two, then buying one my self two years ago. The best mercedes of all time. Today's new S class still can't touch the quality and craftsmanship that was put in this car. A true piece of art. My hat off to Mr. Bruno Sacco always.

Mercedes has always been ahead of it time. Some of their standard in their older models 90's and early 2000s are new in today's modern vehicles. Been a Mercedes-Benz guy since age 6. So far, I have owned the following Mercedes-Benzs:
1. 1986 E-320,
2. 2000 E-320,
3. 2004 E-320,
4. 2000 SLK-430 V8
5. 2000 S-430 W-140 V8 4.3L (2022)

That's nothing... Did you know these beauties had an optional infotainment system... You could get your S-class with a full color navigation system with voice commands, TV, CD changer, tape player, radio and telephone.
You could also get optional orthopedic, heated, ventilated, memory seats with massage functions.
The 98' model even came with radar guided cruise control. Spaceship technologies in the 90s! A time where climate control and an automatic gearbox were considered big luxury. The W140 is an absolutely amazing car. She could even give today's luxury cars a run for their money.

@@Megadriver I love your insight, but ventilated seats weren't offered till the W220. The W140 however had something almost no other car did or has; a power operated interior rear view mirror! It was before auto dimming mirrors so they incorporated a motor to lower it automatically and let the driver adjust it with the switch. It was phased out by 96 I believe. The multimedia system (the very first Mercedes COMMAND system) was Japan exclusive I believe.
One of the best presentation I've seen so far of the W140. German quality or walk away. The Best or Nothing... Full stop. Exceeds many 2020's so called cars...

Loved the biodegradable wiring harness these models had!
Fortunately they apparently corrected this issue in later models post 1995
All Mercs from early 90s have that issue (W124, R129, W202).
That harness type was designed on purpose in order to ease the recycle process in ~10 years time. Mercedes came back to normal cheaper harnesses material in 96 because of lowering build costs.

I’m blessed enough to now be driving the W222 S Class AMG Line 350d. The technology in the video hasn’t changed all too much now surprisingly. Even to this day the rear reclining seats amazes most friends and family. I never new the soft closing feature existed back then. That also amazes people. Mercedes really we’re far, far ahead for their time.
I’m looking for what next to go for but I find myself struggling.

Great deal ! 500s (SWB) in original configuration in Europa become very rare !...because lot of people want create "AMG" replica since SWB base .... no problem for a 350D/280 (because these 2 motorisation are powerless and never become true collectors)but its a secrilege on 420/500/600...even a 320..
Rather buy a new one.

У современных автомобилей более бюджетных категорий немного другие основные задачи, нежели обеспечить исключительный комфорт пассажирам заднего ряда. Для этого есть большое количество современных автомобилей премиум и люкс сегмента, в которых все эти технологии внедрены (и даже чуть больше). Конечно же, во многом благодаря Mercedes W140, установившем в своё время столь высокую планку.
