Toby Fox has just released the "Deltarune Spring Newsletter", and inside he's confirmed that the "Cowboy section" has been CANCELLED. This is sad news for everyone who was excited for cowboy shootout section in Deltarune Chapter 3, HOWEVER some fans believe there's a deeper conspiracy here, and that Toby Fox is leaving us secret messages as to who the secret boss of Chapter 3 will be. The craziest theory I can possibly make, WOODY THEORY, is the result of trying to uncover what Toby is telling us.

Imagine a scenario. Deltarune chapters 3 through 5 drop, your face lights up, and you hastily pay whatever absolutely over-generous price the funny dog man set for his game. You avoid youtube when you can't play as to not be spoiled, you search and hunt and devour every bit of lore and hidden details in chapter three before even thinking of moving on to the next, not even allowing yourself to see the final ending cutscene of the chapter. After a wonderful, but slightly tedious few days of scouring the game, you've found it. It was hidden well this time, but not well enough. The boss you've been itching to test your skills against all this time. You enter the shadowed room, the music swelling, as a familiar leitmotif hums solemnly in the background, reminding you of just what you've truly discovered, what horrors you have unleashed by entering this place, by unlocking this beast's cage. Calling to you from the darkness, a lone sound, bitcrushed and strained, as if the game itself can barely handle the noise it's producing through your speakers...

That cancellation thing gave very big, “Cancelled due to leaks,” vibes. Especially with it being centered around television and shows get cancelled. Maybe the secret boss is a forgotten cancelled show.

The pull string is actually genius cause it also fits into how both Jevil and Spamton are based on toys that require outside interaction to function - Jevil is a Jack-in-the-box that has a crank which needs to be turned, and Spamton is a marionette that moves by pulling strings.

@@aliciaflores8772 I think incorporates is a better word than based, since Spamton is a representation of spam emails but his fight form clearly incorporates marionette imagery with the string, same with Jevil being a representation of the joker card but him incorporating jack-in-the-box imagery (his springy neck when attacked comes to mind, and his tail looks like a crank).

I can already imagine a scene in my head where you *have a choice* to convince the "Woody like character" would tear out the "Mike" from their body, (paralleling what Kris has been doing) but it eventually kills them both in the process, cause they both need each other to live or something like that.
I'm not 100% sure about this idea, but I still think it's neat to think about.

It wasn't too dark. It was rewritten because Woody was an unlikable protagonist at the time, so they made it so his jealousy was more funny and petty rather than angry
Woody as a villain would probably be similar to the villain of Toy Story 3.
Assuming the Woody Theory is true, what exactly got cancelled might've not even been an entire TV series, but rather a segment on some sort of variety show. So Toby's exact word choice in the Newsletter would still fit. Having a TV-themed chapter that uses a variety show as a set piece also makes a lot of sense, it'd allow for a variety of locations and enemies and whatnot.

Adding to the Mike “friend inside me” idea, how do you get to the Spamton dialogue about Mike? By picking the “Friends” option. Adding to THAT, the basement face is labeled “friend” in the files if I recall correctly.
@chop Ah ok, perhaps like some sort of thing associated with Gaster surveying the basement? The only thing that makes me skeptical of it being Gaster himself is the eye colours, we know those came from Swatch so it seems unlikely Gaster would have those eyes too
@@kingkreal4409 Honestly I do think that face is something Spamton's using to surveil the castle. I know for certain he can at least hear what's going on in there because he uses 'Clown around town' to reference Jevil and that is a phrase Lancer says at one point while Susie's carrying him.

the broader your idea, the more likely you're going to be correct. Also, for the train, that does sound plausible, if only on account of "every rpg needs a train fighting sequence". However, that also discounts it on account of possibly being a normal section & NOT a secret section.
Agreed; here is my stupid idea for a cowboy boss.
Mike still is the main big bad, and says he canceled tons of shows but one never backs down since it is ‘his genre’s cliche’
You go out and find them and have a Scamton style encounter with them but with them quietly shooting with a six shooter ala Undyne chase in Undertale.
You find their old studio and they are truly a cliche of the western genre that embraced their strings and lost themselves, sure they are stronger for it but… they lost themselves in their strings, a puppet more than Spamton that only shows themselves when you spare or kill them

The sprite of Mike’s creepy face you see briefly in Queen’s basement is called “IMAGE_FRIEND” internally, and “IMAGE” is the prefix usually used with sprites that exist ‘outside’ of the game world, like those in the menu. This is making way too much sense now…
I was thinking the same thing because it all lines up with the phrasing he used, with Mike being the literal "FRIEND inside me"!

I like to think that if a Woody-like character was the secret boss, his story would be that Mike controlled him WITH the voice box, but with the mysterious man’s help(Gaster), he got it ripped out. Unfortunately, he slowly became a walking corpse, like how Kris is without they’re soul, and everyone slowly forgot him. Him missing an arm would also be a sort of reference to Toy Story 2.

random theory: everyone thinks chapter 3 will be based off tv shows i agree too but i also think the shows will be based off the rooms of the house like a cooking show, a soap opera for the bathroom, kris room being a game show or an award show(because of the trophies) at first i thought the hallway may be the wild west cowboy part because of the cactus and the hallway isn’t really the biggest part of the house which fits with it being an extremely brief cowboy scene

Can't believe I'm saying this but I now think there's a decent chance of Chapter 3's secret boss being based on Woody from Toy Story. Good work. Just something I'd like to add to the whole Toby Fox being a trickster discussion, I agree that Toby doesn't outright lie. I think if he specifically goes out of his way to say that something is not connected to Deltarune, it should be taken at face value. For example at the end of the Spamton Sweepstakes, Toby made sure to let us know that the final live stream should not be considered canon. It should be noted however that he is capable of leaving out the full truth. On the day Chapter 2's release date was announced, Toby made it seem like they were just playing through Chapter 1 to celebrate Undertale's 6th anniversary. He didn't say anything about any news on the game but at the very end of the live stream he just dropped the announcement that Chapter 2 would be releasing in 3 days. He didn't outright lie, but he still went out of his way to surprise us. So now back to the main topic at hand, with the way Toby worded it in the email, I think it could be possible that Toby means the cowboy segment gets cancelled In-Universe. The use of the word "segment" also makes me think he could be talking about a TV segment rather than a segment of the game. This way he's not lying but he's not giving us the full truth either. This also goes with the secret boss themes of being abandoned and discarded and blah blah blah this video already went over all that. So yeah, another banger vid...

I specifically remember the announcement of the ch. 1 playthrough stream "for no reason" being incredibly suspicious, and I thought it was a tease for the rest of the game coming out (I only thought there were 3 chapters at the time)

As I once heard about worldbuilding, you can't simply have "our medieval Britain but people do magic" because why would it have become our medieval Britain in such world.

@@perhapsmoose Exactly the vibe that i was getting from this video (and also the vibe that i got from someone in the steam forums making a huge and pretty cool summary of the upcoming chapters… that guy recommended this youtuber, spookydood, in his post, which is how i got here)
These people make plausible assumptions regarding upcoming content, and oftentimes put a lot more thought into their work that the “normal” fanbase would do; however they genuinely believe they’re “the messiah” and that their theory is the best theory ever made and there’s no denying it. I have the exact same feeling that you have regarding these people, i really enjoy their theories and opinions but i hate watching their content because they just act SO obnoxiously its actually difficult to watch.
(Also i doubt this is interesting but Steam forums guy had this to tell about his theories: “I feel that they're a bit too elaborate to waste on a relatively obscure place like this, but at the same time, I don't really like getting attention anyway. So I think I'll drop them here, just so that I can later point to this post if I turn out to have gotten something right.” That just kinda proves my point lol, great theories but annoying behavior.)

I genuinely like the idea of this boss, it would make sense thematically and I mean, we are in a tv so parodies of movie characters are to be expected.
Still, regardless of whether it's related to the secret boss or not, I am definitely not convinced of the "it means nothing" argument.
I think it's very weird for toby to tell us that it MAY be canceled.
The wording makes it seem like it's outside of his control and if that's the case I think he would wait for it to be certain that it's getting cancelled before telling us that. If it's in his control, then what's the hold up? Why the "may"? Why didn't he just say "we decided to cancel it"?
Toby strikes me as the kind of person that hates disappointing and wants to be upfront. That's why when deltarune ch 1 came out he clearly said "if you are expecting to feel the same way you felt with undertale, I am sorry but I don't think I can do that."
Given that, why tell us "hey, maybe you will be disappointed. or maybe not. Cowboys amirite?"
I really think if this wasn't building up to something he would have just told us, "sorry, it's canceled". The "may" really makes me think there's something here.

I guess in the TV it talks about Super Smashin' Fighters and the Green Lizard Asriel let drop off a cliff being a reference to Super Mario World, and also the Omelette made from Green eggs, and maybe he'd want revenge for that, but wtf
@@JJSSBU I don't remember which video it was exactly but yeah it was a theory that since all the secret bosses are stuff that has been discarded, Yoshi being dropped off the cliff was like being discarded. I think there was also something about him being Asriel's main in Super Smashing Fighters, which would make him feel abandoned when he left for college. It wasn't taking itself too seriously but I thought it was interesting to draw attention to the possible darkners that might pop out if Super Smashing Fighters is part of the dark world.
And on top of all of this, going with the idea that each secret boss will use the human souls in reverse order that they appeared in undertale (since yellow was the last and all bosses after that used red), the next would be purple. A soul colour in which most projectiles and the soul itself move left and right on set tracks would make sense with that horse race carnival game that was mentioned in the video. Sounds like a long shot but does make sense
I'd like to note that "is in danger of being cancelled" doesn't equal to "is definitely cancelled". It means that it just might be cancelled.
especally since its late in development anyways. It could be also possible that remnants of the cowboy secion could remain just for the secret boss (assuming its an enitre section of the home darkworld like cyber city and not a section devoted to the boss like card castle basement).
If it does get cancelled i bet there will still be a nod to it somewhere in the game. A cowboy hat or six shooter in a garbage can or something.

One thing to note is that the first woody meme Toby made was in July 2017, where he claimed that “I have no idea why I made this”, which is before chapter 1 released, but Deltarune was conceptualized in 2012. We don’t know how much was conceptualized, or how much has changed (although it seems a lot has), but we know at least Jevil was conceptualized in 2012, even if he did get greatly revised. So it’s possible the chapter 3 secret boss predates the woody memes, which makes it less likely the boss is a Woody expy.
Another thing is that it may be a bit redundant. Woody is a sort of doll, and having two secret bosses in a row that are dolls seems odd, even if it’s Mike who is really pulling the strings. Also, the Yellow soul is associated with cowboys and guns in Undertale with the Seventh human, but yellow mode was already used by Spamton. I doubt the same soul mode will be used twice, especially not right after each other.
I do think Mike is definitely a Microphone or something similar, since not only would it fit the TV theme, but it also is common for characters names to be puns or plays on words (Jevil= Joker+Devil, Spamton= Spam mail+Mettaton, Tenna=Antenna, December Holiday, etc)
To be fair, the green soul wouldn't be THAT out of place. What if the projectiles must be blocked by the shadow mantle? That's why Seam says you can't win without it. You'll just get shot and die lol
But how about the Chapter 3 boss uses a new soul AND the yellow soul?
Maybe each boss uses a new soul each Chapter and we end up with a final fight with the Seven soul colors
@@JJSSBU That seems interesting, but would also be a complete mess, and difficult to balance. Like, going from a yellow soul to green to blue would be disorienting. I can see a super hard extra boss using all the soul modes, but the third secret boss seems a bit early to do even more weird stuff.
yeah there are a lot of similar themes, maybe the green soul is utilized to deflect against gun like projectiles? that’s the only way i can see it without reusing the yellow mechanic
@@wristoph Eh, I still see it that each secret boss with use a weapon that represents the soul color of their boss (Jevil: Jevilsknife (red, real knife), Spamton: Arm cannon (Yellow, empty gun). So the next boss would use the green soul and use some sort of frying pan. I could be wrong, since there is a small sample size for the bosses, but I doubt there would be two secret bosses who use a gun in a row.
I’m still holding out hope for a boss based on the rotting flowers in the garbage but holy damn this actually sounds so plausible and cool. imagine if they did the race horse thing and it was like a jousting match with the green soul mechanic
I doubt that would be the case. I think the chapter's gonna be just TV related. Maybe there will be some Kris' House stuff like Chariel, and maybe even the flowers as you said, but I think they will be used sparingly. My fan theory is that Chariel will act similar to the coffee table from Mother 3. Flowers do play the theme of being discarded, and I hope to see some form of Flowey again, but I think it's most likely that we are going to see a cancelled show instead, since it fits the theme more. However, I do think Flowey may still return because of Asgore's shop. Or maybe a golden flower will appear elsewhere. But a fun idea I have is that the 7 flowers that Asgore has will act as the big bad to a chapter, representing Pawns, just like Queen and King represent chess pieces.
@HBegaming YT How does that prove your point? You literally only made my theory more likely. Since when was a chair, flowers, and crayons part of the entertainment industry, besides being props? Also nobody "forgot" because the chapter didn't even come out. There's no "forgetting", since it's pure speculation.
But, my speculation is that because we only saw the shadow men and the forecast guys, and possibly cut cowboy sprites, we're gonna get a world that centralizes on TV tropes, and that's already a lot for one chapter.
Adding stuff like kitchen appliances and items found in Kris' room or the hallway will sorta muddy the theme a bit. No saying that Toby can't wrap up everything neatly, but it just seems unlikely. I just think Chariel could be a cute gag that Toby might want to include, specially since it is right next to the TV. Like a horse, something similar to what Mother 3 did with the coffee table.
I dont think green soul Is what we are gonna get, Jevil used special Red jevilsknife attacks similary to asgores trident, spamton used the mettaton soul, by going counter clockwise the next One would be muffets purple Attack, which actually fits super well if the Battle Will take Place on the race horse thing as those things can Only go in a straight line similary to how the purple mechanic works

Gotta be honest, a cowboy themed secret boss could have a lot possibilities. If we were to take the newsletter literally, maybe the story of the boss would be that his location in the next Dark World is threatened to be cancelled, and he's desperately trying to gain attention to his western location, even roping (haha pun) in the Delta Warriors in various activities to have even a sliver of customers. However, since he would be a secret boss, we can deny him attention, and his western location would be taken away completely. If we do humor him and play along with whatever he offers, the climactic battle could be one where we'd need to stop him from doing something very bad, akin to Spamton wanting to take Kris's soul to become a god. The secret boss may have even tricked us into completing most of the requirements for that really bad thing. After all, Spamton did say "Don't believe everything you see on [TV]" and The man's a criminal I tell ya! A criminal!" On any case, cool video and I can't wait to see more!!!

I love how you had a debunking part of the video and an off the wall theory. It's great to think about things from different perspectives. I do also agree that we should give Toby more benefit of the doubt and stop saying everything is connected to Deltarune if he says something isn't.

This video is pretty old at this point but i want to throw in one more important detail into the ring... Spamton has a line of dialog in his NEO fight where he uses the word "Schmoes" a word spoken by buzz lightyear in toystory, something very specific to reference in game

I don't think that the teaser is necessarily for a secret boss, but I could see it being a bit of foreshadowing for themes or gameplay mechanics. Like what if for example you have the choice to promote or pick up one of two shows as Kris, resulting in the other one being cancelled. The following gameplay section would then be based on your Choice- explaining why Toby doesn't know whether the western segment will get cancelled or not: he can't predict what choice each player will take
Or cancellation is just a looming threat to the darkners of that fountain and it was just a pun

The all caps, and the word device suggest a link to The Doctor, and of course, the fact it's called Friend... Might just tie up with A FRIEND INSIDE ME
I’d like to add two things to this theory:
1. I think Mike is the Woody character and Tenna is the voice box, because Spamton talks about Mike being screwed over
2. I think the Mike Road connection could work since one of the creators of the Wing Dings font is named Kris Holmes

this is the only theory involving things outside of the game itself that ive ever liked. simply because itd be so stupid and insane that i hope it's true.

Remember, if the whole foundation of Spamton and his character partly stems from a random commercial in 1997 about a brand of soda that probably NOBODY knew about until they started digging, this could be entirely possible.

If Mike is actually "Mic", it would make a lot of sense that Spamton would try to tell you not to trust a thing he "says"... what do microphones do, after all? They record. Imagine a scenario in which Spamton is trying to interract with this character and theyre just repeating what he says back to him, like a 'try me!' toy at a superstore.
Honestly, this is a possibility, but I think that there's at least one thing that's very likely at this point, it's that the secret boss will be western-themed.
As you said, the way Toby says that the cowboy section *might* get cancelled and that it's the way cowboy shows go is weird.
And the cowboy show getting cancelled suits the theme both Jevil and Spamton had of getting discarded before meeting *someone* and then turning crazy.
So at this point, I think that this is what is most likely to happen. And who knows maybe it will also be a Woody parody, but we'll just have to wait and see for that.

This reminds me of the early days when newcomers thought Gaster literally had nothing to do with Deltarune and took Toby at his (vague) word that Undertale and Deltarune are "different worlds", only to find out that all secret bosses are being influenced by Gaster, every single one of your choices are being recorded in the files, Kris and Susie's names are anagrams of "Risk" and "Issue", Gaster's motif is everywhere, Papyrus is acting sus, foreshadowing of sans being a Darkner and skeleton origins, the sounds outside the Bunker being Entry 17 slowed down, the cell-phone making Entry 17 noises, characters sharing likenesses with Gaster, etc. etc.
Feels now like Deltarune has EVERYTHING to do with Gaster, yet people still find it "too much of a reach". Glad theorists like you are finally noticing Toby's insanely clever writing style, we have some bonkers stuff ahead.

toby fox has a history of discretely alluding to developments in his projects in update posts as far back as the undertale kickstarter updates (including "the very nature is shrouded in darkness" or calling what i assume was the true lab "A nice place with a shower, air conditioning, and a bunch of fun movies to watch"), so i don't think including some obfuscated foreshadowing is necessarily a "cawthon-esque" mischaracterization discussed in the first half of the video (although i heavily agree with the point that part of the video is making in general - in particular, acting as if independent projects must be tied to his main project in some way seems like it'd be really frustrating for a creator to be on the receiving end on). at the same time, during the development of undertale he promised a robot dating section and later unambiguously announced that was taken out and indeed there is no mettaton date in undertale, so i don't think he's like, randomly lying about cutting content
tbh had been considering the possibility of secret boss woody before watching this video but i never really thought the tumblr posts were intended to hint toward it directly, just that they give the impression of "the game's lead developer thinks woody is funny and/or has woody on his mind and would therefore make a woody-themed character if he felt like it". and also I really really do hope it is woody
This is just a coincidence and couldn't mean anything, but I wanted to point out Woody's Roundup is shown filmed with string marionettes, and the last secret boss we got (Spamton NEO) is a also a string marionette.

I'll be coming back to rewatch this in the next few months and/or years when this turns out to be true, lol. On the surface, it seems like a total crack theory, but it has a surprising amount of evidence in comparison to other secret boss theories and is 200% more interesting than all the other concepts I've seen to boot.

Something I don't think people have thought about, but he wrote this in Feburary. He even says so at the beginning of the letter. So when he says "It's almost done" that means it was almost done 2 months ago and by now it's most likely finished and full focus is now on the other 2 chapters.
Also, the jukebox guy that woody uses as a microphone in toy story 1 is litterally called mike
it could also be possible that the western segment of chapter 3 is scrapped but what remains of it is being reused just for the secret boss as a potential middle road option. Considering he put so much work into it is not unreasonable to scrap together what's done and repurpose it for the one secret boss.

End of story prediction: everything has been going well you seal each fountain that appears, and you have a plan to stop kris, but the night before the the Festival when goat boy comes home, kris creates a fountain is the center if town, causing the rumbling
Chapter one probably had jevil be told that his world was nothing but a collection of card and boardgames, which broke him and chapter two probably had spamton be given financial advice on future events which led him to ruin when he stopped getting advice. I think that the third boss will be a cowboy who's told that he is part of a show which may act as an end of the world scenario where the player will either give him a final duel to go out guns blazing or convince him to do some good in the world.

Hey, this theory has sense, and its likely its very related to the "shadowmen" teaser where they use guns and stuff and might be cowboys in another setting.

I’ve been hypothesizing for the longest time that Chapter 3’s secret boss is the star of a long cancelled television show. A definite theme of the secret bosses is being forgotten and a worn-out cowboy doll would fit right at home along side a Jack in the box and a puppet
It's understandable where the fandom is coming from, there's multiple instances where toby referenced previous works he took part in in Undertale and Deltarune (like Homestuck or Cucumber Quest).
He teased releases in other occasions too, like when he didn't know when chapter 2 would be done and he estimated we'd see it in 99 years.
I used to think it was going to be like VHS tapes or something but now I definitely think it's a cowboy.
