      I use the SMSL SA300 for over a year now for my desktop setup and really like it. Do you plan making a separate review on that comparing to budget full size amps and recomanding suitable speakers?
      You mentioned the internal DAC to be the weak point. Would something cheap like the Topping E30 make a noticeable difference?

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  Před 3 lety +4

      I don't think I will make a review on it since there are already a few good one. Already with the AUNE X8, I hear an improvement and Mr. Vintage loves it with the SMSL M400. Of course, it is ridiculous to add a DAC like that to his SA300. I would say, don't spend money on upgrading the SA300, if you you want to move up, just get something else completely instead for a true upgrade.

      Really a bargain at $140. How does it compare to Sprout100, a $700 class D with roughly the same output of 50W into 8Ω? I knew you reviewed Sprout100 some time ago.

      @ThomasAndStereo  Před 3 lety +2

      @@qqsrx I remember the Sprout 100 was 'smoother' and had more punch especially when I engage the bass boost. It also had phono and a better USB dac.The SMSL SA 300is more neutral. I need to AB test to be sure but that is based on memory.

    Nice comparison!I have a pair of The Fives and am quite happy with them. Like you, I am less worried about accuracy than I am engagement. I am using them about 50/50 music and TV audio. I am using them with a subwoofer and I think that made a significant difference for me. I really feel like this made it more tune-able. I also think it improved the midrange noticeably. . I already owned the sub so it did not increase the cost. I was primarily looking to simplify my life by having a system that my wife could operate. Now I have that plus I like the way it sounds.

    • @ThomasAndStereo
      @ThomasAndStereo  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, from my understanding, once you plug in a sub, it will send less low frequency to the woofers in the speaker so it allows the midrange to improve.

    Great review Thomas as usual! The Fives are so much fun. I'm not a true audiophile, (but I am a musician) and I absolutely LOVE them. Best money I ever spent. I connect a subwoofer when listening to music but keep it off on TV. I think they are an outstanding value for money and the sound quality and they really save space, since not only are they small - you don't need a receiver. PS - I also can't thank you enough for recommending (in another review) the Uberlight 4200 TL LED lamp! My favorite thing to softly light my turntable or see whatever I'm doing in my workshop clearly.

    I run these via a tv/nvidia shield setup. The dynamic range of films means that the bass can’t get a little out of hand at times and take away from the clarity of the mids and highs they can produce which makes dialogue a little light for my taste.
    A simple solution is to insert a rca into the sub out which puts in a 80hz hpf and then place them a little closer to wall to compensate. For music, just take out the rca and they are great. Not a very neutral speaker but fun to listen to.
    The bottom end is pretty impressive for a 4.5inch.

    I recently lived several days with these Fives vs the Kanto Tuks. Important point: I like my speakers bright. For example, my Sony headphones are set to "bright." I liked everything about the Fives (including their $200 discount) EXCEPT the highs on the Tuks just blew them away. So I returned the Fives. They sure were beautiful, though. If treble isn't what floats your boat, these are very desirable active speakers.

I saw many peoples ask in the forums why hdmi input is so rare in DACs. It is much better inferface than I2S. (And I can confirm this using my NAD DAC. )The answer is often ... Ahhh ... You have to pay for license if you want to use HDMI. But even 1000+USD dac doesn t contain hdmi input ... Very strange ... So thanks to Klipsh 👍🙂

    So nice to hear a reviewer who doesn’t adhere to the neutral is God in music. Every speaker has a flavor of it’s own, and for many, neutral is B-O-R-I-N-G. Listening to live music rarely sounds neutral, yet so many are ecstatic with hearing it in its fullness in a live setting including me. Regarding the review itself, the Fives might provide “fun” bass in a small room, but the pair I had were woefully inadequate in a medium sized room. The solution though is sooo freeking simple. Get an 8-10” subwoofer and these speakers really come alive! The midrange/woofer can concentrate on the mids without having to pull from the mids to try to get to 50hz or so. So u get great lows, nice mids, and highs without asking a 5+” speaker to do everything and shine yur shoes too. The Fives are neat gizmos with all their wireless connectivity and dsp, but get real. These are NOT speakers for audiophiles. Serious music performance requires serious movement of air, and all the dsp tricks (handy I’ll admit, especially at low volume) in the world can’t make a 5” speaker sound like an 8” speaker of similar build. There’s a reason the Fives with all of their electronics only cost $799.

    I have both the The Fives and the rp600m and as usual Thomas nails it. Be careful turning them up because the woofer will run out of excursion. It moves a lot. The big sound out of the tiny Fives is actually shocking but of course not audiophile by any means. I had them in my bedroom for a while, but the low end is a bit much for low volume listening. Right now I have them as desktop speakers. If you keep the volume in check they are not too forward. They actually create a nice desktop soundstage.

    One thing to keep in mind is that the Klipsch Fives have something called "Dynamic Bass" enabled by default (bass boost). This can be disabled by holding the sub-woofer button on the remote for 3 seconds. So if you are complaining about "too much bass" you should give this a try. Personally, I like it with it on, but I typically listen at a low to medium volume.
