Good suggestion from Edward Perry. All manufacturers have a bed in (break in) procedure for new brake linings. It makes all the difference if you want the new pads to stay quiet and stop your bike in the shortest possible distance.

We own an ebike shop and that sounds like they got something on the pads. It happens to our customers when they ride through a puddle with grease in the water or leak fluid onto them. A money saving suggestion is to use nail polish remover to clean everything instead of buying cleaner. That can work for minor problems. But once something oily gets on the pads it’s usually replacement time.

    • @CitizenCycle925
      @CitizenCycle925  Před 3 lety

Thanks for the tip I never thought of using nail polish remover. There was definitely some oil on the caliper so I think that's what happened. I'm going to have to keep checking to make sure those brakes aren't leaking somewhere.

our Volt Canadian FAKE 750's True 500 Watt bikes, did the same thing.
Went on a users group and found there was a "soft" recall of defective pads.
They sent me out new pads and this fixed the horrendous squealing.
Just one more thing how Canada Volt SUX! Defective pads probably is or was the problem.

Bryan, I ruined my discs first ride on my first bike. Went down a very steep hill and held the brakes on until it turned the discs black. They had got too hot, but I see that new discs are cheap. Had same prob with my disc brakes on ebike I bought online
The guy that assembled it said it would just take some riding - it didn't.
Next I asked a guy who rehabs and sells bikes he did the sandpaper thing - didn't do it.
Last I saw one of my neighbors who altho not a cyclist is the go-to guy for anything.
He put some put some oil some where before the pads - he said it bind up and make noise - wa la no more noise
He showed me where he did it but I'm not handy at all, and looked
at the assembly and can't remember.
He is on holiday so I can't ask him.
All I know is two people that should have known didn't.

A friend of mine warned me about hydraulic brakes. He said if they leak, you either get screaming, loud brakes or no brakes. I kept my mechanical brakes but upgraded to the Tektro E10.11(ceramic metallic) when I changed mine on my Rover 5.

I had the same issue recently. My ceramic pads never gave me a problem but when I tried semi-metalic the sound was unbearable after a couple rides. I cleaned them and they were filthy, which didn't make sense as the ceramics never got so dirty. My guess is that the semi metallic either magnetized and drew/held dust or the rotors just aren't right for semi-metalic. Back to ceramic pads and problem resolved.

  • @domitron

I had a horrible grinding in my new Himiway Step-through's rear brake and both front and back squealed a little, so I opened the rear up to find that the spring had some bent and was touching the rotor I guess. I bent back the spring the best I could with a pair of pliers, and they sound fine now. I still hear some small amount of squeal, but all the grinding is gone. I have no idea how the spring got bent like that on a brand new bike. Maybe I did it when I was adjusting them somehow, but bending them back mostly fixed the grinding problem. Still, if you want to get rid of the squeal entirely, I think you need to get new pads because I think the ones that come with the Himiway squeal right from the factory.

@@mujtabamujeeb786 It has been awhile, but I recall it folded over on itself. I just bent it back using a pair of pliars. I do not know exactly how yours was bent, though, so it might not work (or you might end up breaking it). Sorry I cannot be of more help.

06:05 I have little experience on bicycle brakes and no experience with hydraulic brakes on bicycles, but if that uneven pad wear were shown on any of my motorcycles, I'd replace the pads and rotor. On motorcycles, uneven pad wear is typically a sign of a warped rotor. I'm a new ebike owner (Himiway Cruiser)
