yeah! due to limitations with the NES the PPU could only scroll H or V. The Super Mario Bros. cartridge doesn't have any mapper IC, so this is impossible!
@@joveaaron-real There's a video showing how Super Mario Brothers actually has its mirroring hardwired since it only needs to scroll one direction, and if you wire it the other way, you get Fancy Mario Brothers, where you can interact with blocks before you can see them.

@@derpyVfoxoX6 No. The first one to support this kind of thing is Super Mario Bros. 2 or Super Mario USA on Japan. Due to NES limitations without expansion chips inside the cartridge (which the original Super Mario Bros. didn't have), the screen could only scroll one way or another and the only way to change this is if you soldered two contacts together or not inside the cartridge. The thing the video shows is blatantly false. If you load up an emulator and try it yourself, you will see it doesn't work.
To prove you wrong on the Vertical Scrolling you mentioned, on world 1-2, you can get all the way on top of the ceiling if you find the way. If you do this, you will get behind the text at the top of the screen and see that, no matter how much you jump there, the screen won't scroll vertically.

For the record, I got this to work on the original version for NES system back in the 90s. Finally nice to see someone else found this. Gotta hit the 041. **This DID NOT WORK in SNES All Stars!** I had read an early edition of Nintendo Power but it did not make the published version because the developers did not intend this to happen and didn't want to advertise an "error" in the game!

I'm calling BS on this because I don't think the NES was capable of this sort of thing because of the limitations on the hardware
The NES can handle 2 screens long for scrolling purpose that can either be only horizontal (SMB) or only vertical (some part of Metroid). The thing the NES struggle with is when you go diagonal : trickeries has to be used that end up with glitches on the sides of the screen (go check SMB3).

But Super Mario Bros. Doesn't even support vertical scrolling, only horizontal scrolling so i doubt that this is real,
I would've believed it if only the "falling off the screen" wouldn't trigger in specific circumstances.
Apparently Super Mario Bros only has vertical and horizontal scrolling, and not diagonal scrolling (in Sonic the Hedgehog when the screen scrolls when you jump, that's diagonol scrolling.)

This is not real.
Super Mario Bros. NEVER scrolls vertically. If it did, then the HUD should block the top of the screen. (but not any foreground sprites) because it is part of the tilemap with the actual level. It stays in place while the level is moving because the game places sprite #0 (likely a single pixel) on the bottom right of the HUD "window". When the video display hits a pixel on sprite #0 that isn't transparent, you can set the X or Y scroll again after already setting it at the top of the screen.

as someone who tried to rewrite super mario using original assets, all I can say is "that's just a bug or just rendering loop". The lowest part of the ground that you are walking has no tiles anymore. The camera and the edge of the map has collision that's why you can't see anything below that and there is nothing but clear screen outside the map

Pretty sure this could not work because of the way famicom handles scrolling and layers. You can only scroll in one direction at a time (that's why in dragon quest when you go up or down, the tiles get a bit glitchy) and the score and coins are rendered in the background layer, just like the blocks. You can't have 2 background layers, so they can't overlap like in the video (the way the games achieves that only part of the background is scrolling just doesn't allow that).
Maybe I'm slightly inaccurate on some of the Technicalities, but I'm convinced that the famicoms limited hardware doesn't allow that and the footage has been tampered with.
