    It also explains how to install a new Pinion Seal.
    This video also shows how to set the correct Backlash on the Ring and Pinion using a Dial Indicator and how to Pre-load the Differential Carrier Bearings.

    Pinion Bearing failure is a common problem on Dodge 1500 Pick-up Trucks, specially if the Gear Oil is not changed at the recommended intervals set by the Manufacturer. You have to realize that there is no filter in the differential, and any metal particles will circulate in the gear oil affecting all the moving parts.
    Another way to extend the life of the Differential components on these trucks is to Change the Differential oil after the initial break-in period for new trucks, which is between 3,000 and 5,000 miles.

    This 3 part series allowed me to rebuild my ruined carrier assembly. The adjusting tool..genius. $6 for fittings & i found a 40" length of threaded 1/2" pipe at work. My 1st rebuild. This Dodge differential lasted from Dealer to June 2016. 183K miles.

    Very well done series on how to repair the problem. I was impressed with the step by step process and found it easy to follow. Did mine the same way following the steps, even made the special tool to set the bearing load. Nice job. Only thing missing was how to manage the pinion while setting the 20inch-pound. I used a 3ft piece of angle and drilled a hole in it to wedge the knuckle while cranking on the lock nut.
    Great job

    Glad I found this. I just purchased a 2010 Ram and a AUL "Bumper to Bumper Warranty". I had this exact same noise. The dealer is now telling me that AUL is denying the claim as this is not covered. Sure looks like part of the drive train to me?? The dealer is trying to charge me nearly $1,300. Can any of you comment on what this should cost? I am taking my truck away from the dealer. Hall Dodge in Virginia Beach VA

    This is a great video .I'm curious about indexing the yoke with the pinion and the drive shaft with the yoke. How tough is it to get the spider gears back into their original locations? After you remove the four bolts and the caps from the u joint bearings you can get tape across the top half of the bearings that are now exposed. Just wrap the black tape around the entire driveshaft making sure you catch the top half of the two bearing tops. Then they won't fall off during removal. Found this works well and keeps them in place while you are working on the differential.. Thank you for sharing this info with us Dodge owners.

  • @carsearch2001
    @carsearch2001 Před 9 lety

    IMO you should have a video on just the dial indicator. Also, what model of indicator will work and where to purchase? Great Video and would save hundreds or even thousands on the repair. The hard part is the Dial Indicator and getting the precise adjustment of the backlash and seating.

  • @frankpaya690
    @frankpaya690 Před 4 lety +1

    It's the preload, in inch pounds, that you want to give attention and priority too. not any "torque" spec, as far as tightening the pinion nut goes. as you said, If You torque the pinion nut to a certain spec, it could be too much load on the bearing, and you wouldn't even be able to turn the pinion. Monitor the inch-pound preload as you're tightening, don't be concentrating on torque spec.

On this particular model in addition to setting the backlash adjustment of the ring gear as it meshes against the pinion gear and setting your bearing preload my question is.........did you have to set the pinion gear depth.......and did you have to use gear paste to check the mesh pattern of the gears?

    My fathers 2002 1500 4x4 had a gear to gear creak noise when turning changed pinion bearings axle bearing and races due to excesive bearing play....now creaking is straight and turning found out lack of friction modifier additive wore limited slip clutch packs on both axle gears so when driven and they heat up they stick together until they cool it gets stuck into a posi state.

    On the pinion nut, suppose I get the right amount of inch pounds and can't tighten it any further, and suppose I'm nowhere near the required foot pounds. What do I do then? If I tighten the nut any further, I will be too tight on the pinion bearings, right?
