Well, I finally got around to doing it. Followed your video to the "T" and the shudder is completely gone. Runs like it did when I bought it and the shuddering was absolutely horrible. Thank you very much for the video...In case any other readers are curious, I have a 2016 Chevy Silverado LTZ (5.3L, V8)..
The transmission filter and amount of transmission fluid to put back inside the transmission is the EXACT amount as shown in this video...
Thanks for the info im gonna be doing my 2017 Silverado soon. This is the best video I've seen so far.
@@fantaztikbeatz
Yeah, definitely good stuff...I did mine 6 months ago and still no shuddering..
It's still running like a champ. Let us all know how it goes...
thanks for this video, i saw last night and the first thing i did this morning was follow step by step and now MY TRUCK BACK TO LIFE!! no SHUDDER!!
Having studder on mines and I’m a lot confused about this whole situation
Good video and thorough explanation of everything. My dealer was going to charge me for this service so I had my local mechanic who I trust perform the service. Tried to get away on the cheap so just did the fluid drain and swap but the shudder didn’t go away. Had him swap out the trans filter the 2nd time it was done and this time it worked. 2016 Yukon XL Denali with the same transmission.
Had this done @ the dealer under warranty and helped the hard shifts. I never did get shutters thought. Starting to act up 45k later so will be doing this again myself. Thanks for the info.
Not bad ! Shudders went back after a few miles on some owners.
Going through it with a 21 Texas Edition, dealer changed fluid to Mobil 1 at 20k, coming up on 45k now, the stumble is back, and have felt the shutters.
Great video. I was having the exact same issue on my 2019 Suburban after I had service guy do a service flush. I took it back a week later when the shudder began and they were stumped. After I saw this video I gave them all this info. And now my ride is GTG. Thank you so much for you video.
Did my 2015 GMC 8L90 with the blue label Mobil1 LV ATF. and so far so good. Shudder free.
Thank you! Just started having this problem. Dealership was $149 for diagnostic and wants $950 to swap fluid and I’m not even at first maintenance interval for another 9K miles… pushing back on warranty. Glad I saw this.
Highway robbery it's 😔
Yeah, stand your ground. They need to fix it at no cost....
Yeah you need to tell that dealer ship what's up by the comments in video this isn't a new issue and a vehicle that new wow I'd definitely fight the dealer and let them do it because down the line if you got a lemon you will need the back logs if it comes down to replacing the vehicle I've received letters in the mail about suing GM about the lemon law definitely need to do more digging look through comments here some have the exact information about what you need to tell the dealer and where they will find the info provided to fix your vehicle
@@caseG80 This is a warranty fix. Mine was done under warranty.
I changed my fluid. The 1st 1000 miles was good and now the shudder is back. It starts around 37 mph. I have to say thanks for the spray bottle hack. That works really well. I have to get me an extractor though. Those cheap hand pumps work but a PIA to use. Now I have to see what GM is going to do about this. Great channel thanks.
I just bought a 2018 sierra 49,000 miles it's starting to do this will gm fix or I have to pay out of pocket ?
Great video. I have a 2017 LTZ with 8 speed trans with approx 92,000 miles. Shudder started at about 89,000 and continually got worse. Your video saved the day. The only 😊problem I had was finding the Mobile 1 Blue Label Fluid. Couldn’t find it anywhere. Amazon shows it available but I gave up on them after 10 days. So,I went to my local Napa Auto store and purchased Valvoline Full Synthetic ATF Dexron VI and Mercon LV. Viola! The results were better than when the truck was new😅. No more shudder and no more load up hard shift between 1st and 2nd. After reading some of the repeat shuddering with some of you, I am hoping this will last.
I have about 25,000 miles since I changed my fluid and it is still good.
Have the same truck 6.2 and am at the same amount of miles and just starting to lighting feel this happening. Planning on doing this immediately.
Question any reason you didn't take it to dealer from paper work I've found from purchasing warranty is up to 100k and by comments in video they need to not just flush but drop the pan because of a heat sensor recall.
@@caseG80 The powertrain warranty is 5 years or 60,000 miles whichever comes first. The transmission temp sensor is a service bulletin, not a recall so I would have had to pay for that myself also. The temp sensor can be a problem but until that problem arises, I am not going to worry about it. It is a simple install anyway.
Excellent video! Thanks for sharing this. My 2017 High Country with 6.2L and 8L90 transmission is exhibiting some of the exact symptoms that you describe. I will be using this video to change mine
Nice job on the video. Many GMC and Chevrolet dealers back in 2016 to 2017, were buying back Trucks and Cars with the 8L90 via the lemon laws. Every state has different lemon laws but GM was buying them back due to the multiple repeat repairs without resolution. This was all because of the Torque Converter Shudder. I remember the dealership I was at originally used the Mobil 1 Black Bottle Fluid, only to have trucks and cars return in like 3000 miles or less with the same complaint. As I recall the Mobil 1 Blue Bottle Fluid came out in 2017 or so and resolved the Torque Converter Shudder immediately and no return complaints. Somewhat surprised you were still able to buy Black Bottle Fluid, as I remember the GM dealers in my area were instructed by the zone office to discard any Black Bottle Fluid due to some dealers still using it and creating repeat customer complaints.
I would like to find out if the black label can be used in cars that require dextron or any other fluid. I have 12 quarts I have no idea what to do with it.
I did this on my high country and it worked perfectly. This is a great video and great Information
I have about 45,000 miles on mine since I did this and it is still going good.
FYI - GM stopped asking dealers to emulate a shudder with pico gauge around mid 2019. Ask your dealer to ref latest version of TSB 18-NA-355 and all you have to do is present your vehicle within the remaining powertrain warranty, tell them you think you have a shudder, and they will triple flush your transmission under warranty. In a Corvette, that's worth 24 quarts of new blue-label Mobil1 LV ATF HP. This is a GTL group 3+ base stock with a special additive pack from Infineum, which is a joint venture between ExxonMobil and Royal Dutch Shell Chemicals.
Hey Ryan - I am going in for this shudder issue in a few days; I have an appointment at my local dealer. You state that they will do that and you seem pretty confident of it, which is awesome. I'm just wondering if it will truly be that easy for me? Do you work for a dealer or did you just do this yourself and they gave you no pushback at all? Ok - thanks!
@@reidabercrombie9219 how’d it go at dealer?
@@caseG80 I was really worried, but it could not have gone better. Drove it, was obviously able to replicate the problem. Service bulletin called for doing the triple flush thing, and that’s what they did. Zero cost to me. Completely fixed the problem. It all worked out perfectly. Couldn’t be happier.
@@reidabercrombie9219 good to hear thanks
Appreciate you posting this. Just a quick heads-up... trans temp is supposed to be between 95-113 for fluid check per GM service manual. Also, if you still have the thermal bypass (thermostat) they recommend to bring it up past 190 initially to cycle the fluid through the cooler lines and then let it cool down to check per the above temps. Obviously if you've deleted the thermostat you can simply check when it's at the above range. Great video!
Does temperature that you mention it’s only on the 6l80-90 tfansmission, the 8l90 To check the fluid level need to be 131-149
@@juanprenteria5077 that's only for the CTS-V/LT1 Camaro if you're at a track session. Under normal conditions, check temp is required to be at 95-113F for the 8l90
@@WingsAA oh ok thank for the correction
Thx good tip
I just did one in the shop, dropped the pan and so much converter clutch material. so i put a new converter in it and did all 4 electronic shocks. Like a new truck.
2018 Silverado. Had my local trans shop flush the system and replace it with Amsoil. Best decision I ever made. Shifts like a dream.
let me know how it does long term. All these trucks will shift perfect at first with any fluid change but the problem is the original fluid was hydroscopic and would induce moisture and cause the problem. The new blue label is anti-hydroscopic, so it is supposed to fix the moisture problem. I am not sure about amsoil.
About to do this soon too. Got 8 qts and want a local shop to flush it for me. I’ll try to come back update you how it goes. No problems at all, just the fact my truck reached its serviceable time limit.
I just came across this video. Sir, I just bought a 2017 silverado with 122k With a bad transmission. The truck would not move. I changed the filter and oil. Now it runs fine but it has that shutter. I'm going to do exactly what have done to your truck.

Wow. Glad I came across this. Just bought a used 2016 Silverado LTZ 4x4 it started doing this after about a month. I got 68,000 miles on it. Shudder is light but only when accelerating uphill. It does shift hard between 1st and second.

Great video!!! Only thing I recommend. You have all these expensive tools but no cheap gloves. Automotive oils can be bad for your hands and fingers.
Gloves are too hard to work with plus studies have shown that used oil can be bad if left on your skin for extended periods but as long as you wipe it off it is fine.
@@737mechanic ok, that actually makes send. My gloves in Florida sweat so much it drip and it’s tough to twist bolts.
Great video. A word of caution replacing the pan. There is a solenoid that can get caught and break the electrical connection. GM had a national hold on that solenoid. It will cost you a valve body to fix it. Ask me how I know.
Happened to me and couldn’t find a solenoid anywhere, found a used valve body on eBay for $400 and was able to take the solenoid off that

What can you do to prevent it happening? Cheers
What kind of electrical issues? My truck has shudder but also tpms warning light and brake trailer light warnings and I think it's an electrical issue.
Thank you for this video. This was very helpful. I just completed this on my truck, hoping the shutter goes away. Next time I’m extracting the fluid, and using a pump sprayer to inject the new fluid, what a mess without!
Did this tonight. I had it flushed several years ago by the dealer before they started using the blue label fluid and the problem came back. Basically parked it for a while or just 'drove around it' by getting to know how to work the throttle.
The dealership put the drain bolt in so tight I bet it has 80+ ft lbs on it and it stripped. I could NOT get it off. So now I'm sitting here with a stripped bolt on the bottom of the pan and the trans filled until it came back out the filler hole. Think I'm going to drive it a couple miles to an oil change shop and have them get it out. Probably going to need a new plug though. Arrrgh.
Some mechanics need to learn how tight things need to be.
I did a double flush on my 2016. Changed it drove it week then flushed it again 10k miles seems to be good my opinion is do it early don't drive around a year with transmission eating itself. Great video 737
Update 20k after the fluid flush still good. Anyone made it to 150k plus on these transmissions
I actually like the easy of doing simplicity of doing a flush on my 8l90. After I shut the truck off and while hot, I opened the level check bolt. 2 quarts came out. Then, I went around and broke loose all the pan bolts. It was more start forward than the 4l60e. 4 quarts in the pan. No issues with the exhaust like I thought. Just yaw to the passenger side. Changed the filter and cleaned everything. Not too messy. The fill... I pump until fluid came out. Started the truck and kept pumping until it was just bright red fluid coming out. Check the temperature and let it dripple and closed it up.
Thanks bud I’ll be using your video on my ‘17 high country same exact issue
Thank you for this excellent video!....I got same truck, only a 2018, with 61,000 and it just started that shutter vibration thing...I have neglected to change the transmission fluid ever because there is no typical dip stick for my local shop to evac the fluid from, so they couldn't do it....Dealer says I should have changed it at 45,000...Taking it to my local GMC Dealer tomorrow to have them do it all with the correct up graded fluid GM now recommends...Hope I have the same great results you did. Thanks again for your help with this video!....
You will see a huge improvement.
I had the shudder come on last summer....2018 Silverado, 6.2 litre, 8 sped transmission....took the truck back to my dealer...they flushed and filled with the Mobil 1 synthetic fluid you’re showing...(blue bottle) ....shudder has not returned.....
Has it came back yet? After 2 years

Thats good to hear. Thank you for the comment.
Yea buddy of mine did this on his 2016 silverado with the 8 speed tranny. It's working so far he said when the mechanics flushed the tyranny there was a bunch of sludge in it, no metal savings though.
You should compare Mobil to Amsol fluid. High reviews for Amsol. I have a 2018 Silverado 6 speed. Transmission thermostat causes oil to heat up extremely high before it will circulate through cooler. Newer models have been fixed. I swopped out thermostat with Surecool bypass and what a difference it made. Temperatures now run the same as 2020 models.
Just did this in a pinch and wished I did the lines but I’m doing it again in a month. I couldn’t believe the new transmission was as bad as the old one. 20,000 miles and looks like 300,000
I appreciate your hard work on this vid but I'm pretty sure your fluid is low. Considering you drained the cooler and lines, they never filled unless you had previously installed a bypass for the trans thermostat. That thermostat does not open and allow fluid into the lines and cooler until the trans reaches 190 on older models, or 158 on newer cooler lines. I'm glad your shutter is gone and wondering if you have any updates considering this vid appears to be about 2 years old at my viewing.
@737mechanic
Great how to video
What is your SWA E #?
I am also a SWA mechanic Dallas base.

At the 35:00 when u removed that screw, that oil coming out is excess oil? I didn't understand that part, you should do that after a fluid change so it levels it up to the perfect level? Please If u can explain, thank you.
That screw has a stand pipe so when you fill the transmission with fluid and warm it to the proper temperature you remove that screw to let any excess drain out, once the excess is drained it will be at the perfect level. If you take that out and nothing drains out you need to keep adding fluid until it starts draining.
I also installed the STL010 in my 8L90 along with doing a filter (while changing temp sensor) and adding blue label. Keeps the 8L90 from opening up the thermal bypass at 194 and gives you an instant fill of the cooler. Keeps my temp around 155 at all times even in the heat of July.
Is the stl010 the bolt in the trans thermostat? I did the thermostat bypass. When i do the fluid change do i do it the same way he did it ?or do i i have to do something different since i did the thermostat bypass?

I had this done and it was a lot better for about a month BUT the same problem came back. Have not done it again. I have the same problems that was described here except no shuttering.
This will almost 100 percent cure the shudder problem. As far as the harsh shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 1st mine is about 90 percent better on that issue. I still have the occasional harsh shift mainly from 1st to 2nd but it is so few and far between I live with it. I do plan on doing it again before long to see if it helps any more but until then I am fine with it.
My 2019 GMC Sierra slt transmission went out at 12,000 miles . Yes I hate this problem got 16,000 now but still jerks a lil
if i only drop the pan, change that fluid a couple times, will that get most of the old fluid out of the system as well? thanks
Yes.
Sometimes the shudder can be the torque converter failing or the driveshaft.
I had the dealer do this under warranty on my 2015 Silverado 6.2L 8-speed (8L90) at right about the mileage you have in the video. They used the blue label ATF. Since then I passed 100k miles. The shudder hasn't returned that I can tell (I have aggressive tires, so it's not quite as easy to tell), but I am getting some hard shifts in low gears, especially when cold. I plan to do this procedure soon. Great video.
The dealer did the fluid swap and then did a shift relearn/reprogram for the transmission on mine. The hard shifting and shutter are gone. If you are still under warranty should see if the dealer will do the relearn.
@@DallasNutsch I did have that done. They did the relearn with the flush a year ago, and indeed it did solve the issue. I'm over 100k now though, and the hard shifts are back. There was an unrelated warranty repair on the temp sensor harness about a month later, which requires removing the pan. Maybe they used the black label stuff by mistake? I don't know. I'm just going to do this anyway. I'm not working four bays at once on flat rate, so I can at least have peace of mind that it's really done right.
Also get a Trans tune, turn the TCC off in 1st through 5th. I use HP tuners well worth the money.
Whats that
Have you tried to use this pump to extract your oil. I tried in mine and it seems like it doesn’t go all the way down the dipstick tube. I’m not sure if there is something at the bottom of the dipstick tube that catches the dipstick or prevents something other than a dipstick to go down the tube.

Im about to do a second fluid/filter change to try and get more of the old fluid remnants out.
Also going to do a third one at the next oil change interval...

One question...
Prior to this transmission service, had you already done a service on it at a lower mileage ?
I just bought a 2016 Denali XL with this 8L90. I have service records for it, but they don't specifically say xxxxx mile transmission service.

Just a thought if truck should be on level ground but had the front tires on 2” peace of wood !!
It should be level whatever it takes to get it there. Obviously slightly unlevel isn't going to be a huge deal.
So I did exactly this a year ago and it fixed my shutter. However after putting about 20,000km the shutter is starting to come back. I'm going to be doing a flush again and hopefully it takes away the shutter again. What I am assuming is there is still old fluid in it from the previous flush that just causes the shuttering to some back. Hopefully with another flush it will dilute the old fluid more and eliminate the problem for good.
It should dilute it enough so it is virtually pure.
I have the same issue but hopefully its still covered under the powertrain warranty as im only at 30,000 miles.
Warranty is 3 year or 36000 miles so you might get lucky.
Ima dog my Silverado out b4 my warranty goes bad

Are you still driving that truck? If you are, any updates on how it’s holding up? About to do this project to my wife’s Yukon.
I am still driving it. I have about 30,000 miles on it since I changed the fluid. It is doing great with no shudder at all.
My father in laws 2019 sierra started doing this. Wondering if there is a way to use transmission pump to pump fluid out of the cooler lines while filling with fresh fluid so as to flush the torque converter?
I am not sure if that would work or not.
You still don’t get the fluid out of torque converter this way,,,
No.
I have a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 4.3L and I don’t have the shudder while driving but when coming to a stop it feels like something pulls me and sometimes it feels like it comes from the engine and sometimes from my rear end, could you please tell me what you think it might be?
The 8 speed in my 2018 6.2 Sierra was very smooth shifting and never experienced the shudder. At 30,000 miles I took it in to my local GM dealer for the new updated fluid exchange and transmission filter change as preventative maintenance. First thing I did not like is that he did the fluid exchange with the flow tech machine before dropping the pan and cleaning it and changing the filter. Now I have a slightly more firm shift from 1-2 and down shift from 2-1. Also, it seems the down shift from 2-1 is a bit lazy. Maybe he knocked a solenoid loose?
Hard to say, did they actually remove the pan or did they simply perform a flush using the new fluid?
@@737mechanic they flushed it first with the flow tech machine, then he dropped the pan and changed the filter and topped it off. I watched him do the whole thing.

Anyone complaining about hard/firm shifts 1-2 2-3 3-4. I solved it in my 2016 Denali with the 8L90. First the dealer exchanged the fluid to this new fluid and that solved my shudder problem. Luckily I caught it before I burned the torque converter clutches.
To solve the hard/firm shifts I had the transmission tuned by a local performance turner that disabled torque converter lockup in the first 4 gears and now its silky smooth. Never had an issue again with shudder or harsh shifts. It's been 40,000 or so miles.
That's good info to know. I still get a harsh shift or two but it is not very often.
Would this Mobil 1 blue label fluid work for a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 5.3 6 speed transmission?
yes..let us know I have same truck..2014 5.3 6 speed...
No use dexron VI on 6L80&90
UPDATE: It has been three weeks since I have done the flush, flushed the transmission twice and no luck. The whole truck vibrates, shakes, and still continues to shudder.
Did you ever get it fixed ? If so what did you do?
@@russellgoss6671 The trucks transmission and transfer case ended up failing. I no longer have the truck because it was becoming a money pit and it just did not run right.
best video award
thanks for the vid. Lots of good info. But cant recommend climbing underneath a running vehicle that's not on jack stands. Especially when dealing with transmission. Vehicles have been known to pop out of park.
Yea everyone has their comfort zone. I have never seen a car jump out of park but I am sure it has happened at some point.
Setting the parking brake and chocking the wheels helps. I just undid the bolts on the pan and drained most of it without pulling the fluid from the lines in my 6l80.
One question I want to find out though is how much fluid is left in converter after you drain your fluid that will get mixed with new fluid
Hey I have a 2014 GMC Sierra 4.3L V6 with I think the 6L80E, could I potentially get this problem too, if so can I still use this Mobil1 Transmission Fluid?
I don't think the 6 speed suffers from this problem. I would stick to dexron VI if I were you and just keep it changed.
@@737mechanic thank you so much sir, I appreciate your reply!😃
great video...i have a cadillac ct6 with the 8l90. my car recently stopped shifting after a drive home from work. parked it in the garage, got up to go to work the next day and for some reason its like the trans isnt responding. gears change on dash but i feel no movement in trans like its till in park every gear. havent had it looked at yet. im tryna figure out where to start any suggetions?
Was that a 3/8" ID clear tubing you used to pull the fluid out of the lines, or did you go from a the 3/8" ID to a 1/2" ID?
Either that or 5/16. I have both so I can connect them together.
@@737mechanic Copy that...Appreciate it..
I have a 2015 gmc sierra 5.3 with this exact same issue bought in Canada, could this solve my issue as well? Thanks so much for the upload 👍🏻
More than likely yes. This is the #1 problem with these trucks. You need to make sure you get the blue label Mobil 1 LV fluid and not the black label.
Thanks again!! I will update when I’m complete 👍🏻
Wow everything u say the truck mine was doing the same thanks a lot very good video will get on this thanks again
Thank you very much for the informative video. May I ask what adapter you used to hook the clear hose to the cooling pipe? There seems to be something in middle connecting both of them. Thank you Sir.
I have different size clear hoses that I bought at home depot and I just push them inside each other to get whatever size I need.
I had this performed on my 2015 sierra denali 6.2 under warranty. There was class action lawsuit for this problem. The GM service bulletin says to flush with fluid and fill something like 28 quarts of fluid. That's why they want to change you rather than warranty it.
what about all the fluid in the torque converter? system has to be flushed while running to remove all old fluid
Yes to remove that fluid you would need to flush it.
Works for 2015 Chevy suburban? I have the same problem I don’t know if it’s ok to do it in that truck some help thanks!
Yes, they have the same issues.
Does anyone know what GM is doing now? If you get a 2022 are they still playing games with this trans fluid or are they coming with the good stuff in them to begin with?
I know GM started using the blue label in the later model trucks and corvettes and I believe that took care of the problem. I haven't heard of any transmission horror stories in the new trucks.
You’re the real MVP 🥲 😂
I used the Amsoil blue label, stopped shudder immediately!!!!
Is that the signature series? I got 2 gallons and hope this fixes it
@@jwill9877 Yes that’s what I used!!!
@@LJK69187 thanks. I hope it fixes my issue as well. Mine started on Friday morning. I parked it and it hasn't moved since. I have a 170k on mine though. I've taken very good care of it and this is the first issue.
Your car is running on 8 or 6 speed? And please provide the oil part number
@@ibramaher 8 speed . Product Code: ATLPK-EA Amsoil signature series fuel efficient ATF Blue label!!!
I have a 2015 gmc sierra denali 1500 4x4 5.3
my trucks problem is that when I accelerate between 0-20mph the transmission kicks/shakes it feels forced. I have to release the gas petal and step on it again slowly. is that transmission fluid recommended for my truck? Thank you for your help!
If it is an 8 speed it is for sure if it is the 6 speed I am not sure.
On bulletin says it’s compatible with dexron 6, I seen some guys use lv hp and dilute with dexron 6.
@@Unko_Josh672 Why would they dilute it with Dextron 6.
Is it still good, i have the exact same problem in my 2015 sierra just started. Thank You in advance kind Sir.
Yes, it is still shudder-free.
Does this technique of fluid extraction pull the old fluid out of the torque converter?
No, the only way to get all the fluid is to do a fluid flush.
Ok. Thank you
@@737mechanic ok thanks
@@737mechanic ok thank you
@@737mechanic can I take the thermostat out, put the cap back in place to do the flush, then put the thermostat back in afterwards? That would dodge having to bring it to operating temp (hot) for the fluid to fully circulate
