    You do not need to take out all items just put alcohol and the match into the hole in the side of the frame next to the on and off black knob the cup will burn and preheat the upper vaporizer tube and burn the mantle. The blue and white bottle is for the alcohol to fill the cup part 35XL Hope this helps. do not use lamp oils today they have wax paraffin in them and will cause problems.

    Leaving that string hanging on the mantle will ruin the mantle if it moves, you should always trim that off before lighting it the first time.

    A very good in depth review for the beginner. I have a lamp I bought almost 30yrs ago, and at that days wages they were expensive then. They are very much worth it....as long as you follow a few rules. As any multifuel stove or lantern the dirtier the fuel the closer the I tervals to cleaning is required. I have used white/unleaded, regular unleaded gas, Kerosine K1, Diesel, Fuel oil. White gas and K1 is the best and cleanest without sooting and gumming up the needle. I prefer to have a gallon of white gas or 91% alcohol for my fire pan. That way it doesn't soot, foul up my mantles and the top cap. Now that isn't NECCESSARY and by all means RUNNING K1 in the preheat won't hurt or destroy the mantels in anyway....its just what I do. A very versatile unit.if you store it, do so full of fuel so the mantels don't dry. and zero out your presure. Don't be scared to clean them it's easier than it looks...just don't loose anything. I bought a spare bag of parts a d rubbed the seals down with silicone and still have them. Never replaced any parts yet on mine. Let warm awhile and start at low and warm some more. Be easy starting...then crank her up. Mines nichol with a deflector shield...she's a bright white with K1 or white gas, more yellow but still whiter than most lamps on diesel. I use a small hand held bike pump it's easier for my clumsy hands...but by no means NECCESSARY. Funny people GRIPE about pumping it....in a bad scenario that would be the least of their problems. When she's thumping and pulsing lightning up the presure and open the feed a bit. Like all pressures she's noisy and eats fuel...not like an Aladin they're super quiet, conservative in fuel in comparison, and a tad bit finicky, but not a multifuel. This unit is a tank for a lifetime and your kids lifetime too....dont even compare build quality to a Co,mean. Not even in the same League never mind the same ball park. Buy one and use the heck out of her don't be scared....she won't break. That way you learn it good for when you need it. DON'T USE NO WAX BASED OILS IN IT PERIOD. Good Luck and enjoy.

      Hi, some people say it can only be used with Paraffin or Kerosene as known in some countries. Is there something to do with the lamp to use white gas? Is this the same as the petromax lamps or those really are just for paraffin?

    Thanks for this. I didn't know that my Butterfly would burn anything but kerosene. Plus I've never used that pan at the bottom but always the jet pressurized by the Schrader valve and a bicycle pump. Good to know this stuff.

    • @user-ro7zd7hg1f
      @user-ro7zd7hg1f Před 2 lety +1

      Don't burn anything but kerosene or diesel in any Petromax or Petromax clone type lantern (Butterfly, Sea Anchor, Britelyte, etc) ever. While it may be fine for a while, these types of lanterns don't have positive shut off valves like Coleman's do. That means if the pump check valve fails it can very easily leak fuel out which then ignites from the flame of the mantle and results in fire or possibly an explosion. Also, if the vaporizer foot valve fails you can't shut the lanterns off without bleeding pressure out from the filler cap. Again, that could ignite the released gasoline vapours. Tons of info to read up on the internet about this. Kerosene isn't volatile like gasoline/white gas which makes it "safe" in the event that this happens.

    You don’t need to take it all apart to put the preheating liquid in the cup. Also, you shouldn’t use lighter fluid. Use denatured alcohol or methylated spirits. Those burn hotter and with not so huge flames. Also, just note, most of the type lanterns are actually made for kerosene/paraffin. You can use olive oil (not recommended) or even I believe citronella oil. Never use white gas or gasoline. The amish use a mixture of about 80%kero/20%white gas to help them light better. Another thing, put the burner/mantle back in the lantern before burning the mantle for the first time. It looked like you were going to get the mantle to far burnt before getting it into the lantern, so be careful about that.

      @@juancarlossilvagutierrez9569 yes of course. If you ever get another Coleman, look for one of the large single mantle kerosene lanterns. Would be the 639C lantern if you want a brand new one. If you want an old one that’s built a little better but might require some maintenance when you get it, look for a 635 or a 237. You have to preheat them with denatured alcohol or methelated spirits or something but they will burn almost anything you put in them. you just need to remember the fuel amount will require a lot more pressure to allow the fuel to move about if little is in it so its best to keep the fuel first filled to what is required and then add the pumps pressure as it will take less pumping to get the fuel going. And when it comes to fuel types just think the more combustible the better the illumination will be. So if your using lamp oil that really does not matter as keresone tends to burn about the same as common lamp oil. I will be coming out soon with an ebook in the next week that will show you all the fuel types you can down load from maccabbeebushcraft.com and I will up link the page to this video when it finished so you can down load it for free. But enjoy the lamp as it kicks butt. If you have any further questions please by all means ask me here and I will help with what I can.

Also, I agree with you about the mantle, it should be prepared in place to avoid damaging it. I've burned Coleman pressure lamps with damaged mantels, the light is uneven and not as bright. If the hole or tear is large, the lamp may not light at all, or spray the gasses around causing a dangerous condition - fire that will follow up by the bail and burn your hand. If you can use diesel, can you use a light vegetable oil like canola or sunflower oil alone?

It turns the upper part of the lamp red hot, but the mantle isn't in the path of the flame. After a minute or more of preheat, I open the valve and all I get is a whistling noise.. no flame at all. The chrome cap is discolored from the high hear. The fuel supply appears to be working... If I expose the needle and open the fuel valve, I get a fine stream of fuel.
