  • Well, here we go. The final (not actually final) stage. Hell it's not even the last one in Nobunaga's Path, but we'll get into that later.
The stage itself is nice, glad to see it's unique. We start just fighting off the Akechi coming at us, but before long, Iga ninjas appear and say they'll get revenge for the destruction of the Iga village.
As you should be aware, we know absolutely nothing about this. It's another thing that happened off-screen. This one we didn't have the luxury of the narrator even telling us what happened, and the Iga ninjas don't make it clear if Nobunaga or Mitsuhide did it. I had assumed Nobunaga did it initially, since Sandayu shows up with a massive hate boner for the guy all of a sudden, but nah, it was Mitsuhide that did that.
    Speaking of Sandayu...
    9:55
Yeah, he just...puts on some random armor and starts acting like a fucking looney. I literally started to laugh out loud seeing how ridiculous this anime power up was. They even made his eyes glow and have him wave his arms around like he's gone berserk or something. Of course, he still just fights exactly the same with the Kusarigama anyways, all this is is a cosmetic change that does nothing. And this armor? Never explained. None of Sandayu's powers are explained, he's like some OC fanfic character that just keeps having bullshit powers come up out of nowhere so he can look cool and like he always has a one-up to whoever he's fighting. We'll see this more in Mitsuhide's Path, but he spends all of his later scenes just acting like he's masterminding everything even though every single one of his plans ends in failure. He's just like "Ha, it failed, just as planned."
Now, as for WHY he suddenly wants to kill Nobunaga... Well, first of all, I've had people tell me Hideyoshi at one points mentions Sandayu's family was murdered by "warriors" and he's held a grudge on them ever since. I've absolutely no goddamn idea where this was said, despite checking my own videos to try to find it, but in either case, it did NOT have enough attention drawn to it as it needed. It's apparently easily missable and not even said by the character in question.
    Now let's check 11:52
Sandayu says he despises the warrior-class and the world that's centered around them, initially supporting Nobunaga because he thought he was going to break that system. But now he believes Nobunaga is trying to make a new world of warriors...for some reason. And yes, I double checked the translation, it's pretty much accurate.
But I've no idea why Sandayu suddenly decided this about Nobunaga, and apparently did so WAY early on considering he was manipulating Mitsuki as far back as Odani, if not earlier. So he really didn't give Nobunaga much of a chance here. And if he hates warriors THAT much, we really should have seen like a flashback showing what happened in his past that caused that so we can at least properly understand where he's coming from. And before all that, if ANYONE was going to destroy the current social structure of Japan, it'd be Nobunaga. Sandayu is trying to kill literally the one person that would be MOST in line with his thinking. I don't... Like... Just... Why!?
And after all that? He just fucking leaves. He gets beat and goes "WELL FINE, YOU GUYS JUST KILL EACH OTHER THEN!" like he's just fucking pouting he couldn't do anything. The whole thing amounted to NOTHING because he just leaves. All he did was set Honnoji on fire, which, by the way, takes away from Mitsuhide's character because that initially served to show his resolve in fighting Nobunaga, but now it's just "man, setting fire to the temple, Sandayu's a dick". As if Mitsuhide WOULDN'T do that.
Okay, anyways, the stage itself. The fire actually adds an extra layer of difficult to the stage, which is nice for the finale. Your health is constantly draining from both your characters so you have to periodically pick up health items to keep from dying. We fight Toshimitsu and Mitsuhide twice here before Mitsuhide finally respawns inside Honnoji. How...how the fuck did he get there..?
Anyways, once we reach the top we have a duel with Mitsuhide...that we don't get to finish. It's the first enemy with 3 health bars so you think "Oh, they're ramping it up because it's the final boss." But nope. Once you get Mitsuhide down to his last health bar, the stage just ends. You don't actually get to finish the fight which is INCREDIBLY anti-climactic for a finale. I dunno why on Earth you would ever do that for your ending. Like, imagine you're fighting Armstrong in Metal Gear Rising, you see the 200% HP and go like "oh shit" but then the fight just screeches to a halt once he hits 100% and you win anyways. How is that in any way satisfying!?
Holy shit, I'm actually running out of space here. This stage has been such a clusterfuck I've ranted for longer than I have in a long time. And I still had more to say! But I guess that'll be saved for another video.

Considering how close Mitsuhide and Nobunaga were, and how guarded Nobunaga was as a ruler. You can't convince me that Nobunaga didn't plan everything out, including his assassination. He conquered the major terrorities of Japan and then he painted himself to be a tyrannical dictator that rules with an iron fist just to direct the citizens hate and enmity at him, and then he instructed his closest friend and confidante to strike down the last warlord in Japan. Proof: why was Nobunaga alone at Honnoji Temple? A Daimyo is supposed to have an entourage and bodyguards protecting him.

The last Honnouji battle with Mitsuhide fighting Nobunaga due to incompatiable views was SW2(yeah Magoichi kills Nobunaga in that one too but at least he had decent motivation)
Subsequent games started to add outside influences : SW3 - It's Motochika goading Mitsuhide into it
SW4 - Hisahide goaded him into it
and now he is just a pawn of BOTH Sandayu and Nobunaga lmao

honestly agree with what you said about sandayu. he's such a poorly written character. it's a shame cuz the kusarigama moveset is quite fun. I hate sandayu with a passion for ruining what would've otherwise been my favorite honnoji incident they've ever done. mitsuhide's determination was so badass (it gets a lot cooler from his pov), but I guess he wasn't badass enough to set fire to nobunaga's temple and, you know, showing that he's gotten over his trauma... sandayu seriously feels like a self insert OC that has nothing to do with anything.
as a big fan of kotaro, I hate to say that I think sandayu should've just been a rival to hanzo. hanzo was great and it could've added to his backstory.

I just finished nobunaga's story in samurai warriors 2. the 5th stage was in honnoji like this stage on the video but there were many differences like there are no ranmaru and no on the video. but in samurai warriors 2 honnoji was not really a last stage, there was 6th stage were nobunaga faces iesayu or whatever tha name of the man with bazoka.

    Are these jokes ?
In real history Oda Nobunaga does at Honoji Senpukku and dies.
Akechi Mitsuhide together with the Hosokawa Clan surround Oda Nobunaga and try to kill him.
Mori (Mouri) Ranmaru fights till deaths, so Oda Nobunaga has time for is senpukku.
That’s what really happen. I never understanded why Koei made Akechi Mitsuhide, Oda Nobunagas best friend.
In history’s Oda Nobunaga treated him like garbage. He let Akechis Mother die at the Incident with another Clan.
Akechi Mitsuhide followed traditional way and doesn‘t Oda Nobunagas new vision. Oda Nobunaga doesn’t liked that about him. He preferred Hashiba (Toyotomi) Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu more, since they have the ambition to conquere all of Japan on their own if it is needed.
(sorry for bad English, I still learning it).

Old comments but i'm gonna say because it's a game, a fictional work that inspired by real history, you could treat this like a "What If" situation about the reason of Honnoji incident. the same with Samurai Warriors 2 where instead of friends. Mitsuhide saved by Nobunaga and admire him until he knew Nobunaga was too cruel.

...Aaah yes. The man who burnt down a fucking Buddhist temple, betrayed and murdered his allies in cold blood. And ruthlessly decimated the Takeda Cavalry with rifles, a new type of weapon that doesn't take a lot of training to use. The man that Nagamasa Azai said "threw away his honor and deserves to burn in hell." Yes he's totally gonna be the one who wants to protect the warrior class.

From the entire series this game is the weirdest. From the historians perspective it is said that Ranmaru Mori was loyal to Nobunaga and yet Nobunaga once said to jim during the Honnouji Incident "Ranmaru, Don't Let Them Get Close to Me" thus Ranmaru Helps Nobunaga Commit Seppuku later he follow him. But why did Yasuke had his back now? It is said that Yasuke was his bodyguards while Ranmaru was his loyal retainer and yet he didn't appeared on this game
Screw Koei for destroying the real history.

to be honest, upon first seeing sandayu's super anime freakout moment, i had no idea how to really feel, playing through nobunaga's path in a 3 day spree starting on release hour i honestly wasn't super feeling the story which was just fine since i was loving the gameplay and the visuals, but stepping back and reconsidering it afterwards plus reading your thoughts on it, it's safe to say im just left a little disappointed by it, the entire time i was super excited to see how this game's rendition of honnoji and the discord between nobunaga and mitsuhide were done but in the end i just find it really weird and unfitting that they shoehorned this whole "ninja antagonist mastermind" thing in between my favorite moment of the story in these games, having played every ps2 warriors game barring orochi 2 and dynasty 6 special i've become quite used to these games being endlessly cheesy and at times cringeworthy but that's never deterred me, here however, they do it in a way that's not even enjoyable in an ironic sense, it commits the massive crime of taking an inherently absurd game far too serious, which sucks because it does other genuinely serious moments well enough in my eyes but completely blows it at the end with this edgy out of nowhere "it's all according to my master plan" dude to massively take away from what is supposed to be the game's highest climax, the moment you anticipate from the beginning, and the end of nobunaga's path as a whole, when before including him you had what could have been an honestly good rendition of a classic moment in the series, i really liked the stage itself with the fact you and your partner are sealed off and constantly losing health standing in most areas, it's enough tension to sell how important this moment really is to the story, but they try to prefire far too hard on the excitement and end up screwing it all up trying to make it seem more grand, god i wish they did better on this game's story, it could've been my favorite warriors game period if not for that and a select few other moments, and it's sad to see it falter so hard in the story department which is something most of the games already don't put a lot of their focus on
