I confess I'm a talentless middle aged dude who's owned guitars since the age of 17 yet the theory has remained a mystery. Never got past cowboy chords and eventually some barre chords, but then put down the guitar for 20 years. I picked it up again, bought myself a new Ibanez electric, and have been learning this song from the excellent tutorial at Shutup&Play. Slogging through nearly 4 months of nearly daily practice, I am SO CLOSE. I can play it down to the last solo which I'm now learning. That final speed picking bit is hard, but rest assured by slowing it down, it is learnable. Trust me folks, if I can learn it, so can you. For me, it took a true love of this song to stick with learning it all this time, and it has absolutely been worth it.
My story is very similar to yours. Ibanez guitar and learning this song of playing it 3 times a day for months... We are similar there but I am still young and have many years of playing ahead of me. I take inspiration from this

Just leaving a comment here to encourage anyone who's trying to learn this song! I've been cracking my knuckles for months trying to get the whole thing down, and today i can finally say that i can play this song completely! It's an indescribable feeling when i finally pulled off the rapid fire triplets at the end of the song! All i would like to say is Good Luck! It's difficult, but it's possible :)
Mastered this song about 6 months ago as well. Still the most intricate thing I know. Now we need to master the Alchemy Live version and my soul can rest.
inspiring comment! it took me 9 months to learn Santeria in its entirety (sans percussion) I've been incredibly fond of this song since I heard it on the radio within the first couple years of having picked up the guitar. The chords and lyrics I've basically learnt through osmosis but that lead requires study, and has been so intimidating, the guitar tab has just been sitting in my UG favorites gathering digital dust.
You are not "talentless". You have just hundreds of people who have an abiding love of music to pick up an instrument and follow their dreams. God Bless you.
I started learning guitar late at 58. I’m 61 now and have been learning this song all the while. My fingerpicking is just getting better the last few months. Thanks for this and helping me learn this song, It will still be a while until I can play through but better late than not. 👍👍👍👍
I have been playing for over 30 years (I am 61 also). This is not an easy song. I learned this song (and most others) by learning the scales in the song key signature (D Minor for Sultans of Swing). I tried to the the rythym parts first, then I learn specific phrases. My approach is not to try to play each phrase note by note by learn each phrase and put them together until I get the song down! Good luck!
@@newhampshirelifestyle4233 Thanks for the help to look at it from that angle. I’ll look at the scale you mentioned. I’ll figure out if it’s a pentatonic scale or ? I can work my way through the Am pentatonic and now the others better all the time. Those scales vertically box by box and recently horizontally now. This guitar endeavour was a big ambition. I practice a lot every day and have had a few Skype lessons. There’s lots of technique and theory to learn…

It’s hard to improve a solo over this, and make it sound good. It’s just so fast and unforgiving. Cudos to Mark for succeeding in doing it beautifully. He’s a master after all
I've been playing this solo for a couple of years. It was difficult for me to learn as an old guy of 68 yrs. old. The last solo is the most difficult to master and I still have some problems with it. Fortunately, I have the whole song/solo memorized but my old fingers have a hard time with all of the fills and solos. A challenging solo but satisfying when I finally was able to play it.
Try using both your index and middle finger to play the fast repeating licks. Not everybody has a turbo charged thumb like Mark! For the fast lick at the end, start with your index finger on the e string and pull off, hit the b string with your thumb, then middle on e, index on e, repeat.
I love this backing track, ive spent countless hours playing over it and just messing with different ways to play this song that i love. Took a month to learn but even now years later i still cannot say i have mastered it. Hopefully soon ill be able to play and sing it perfectly

Agree with DerpySnake, this one sounds custom made, but the vocals are obviously original. The multitracks are available online for most of the songs which have been in guitar hero games, and this is one.
bit late but yeah this might be custom made but normally since the song is divided into tracks when recording in studio you can separate them and remove one
There Are Dozens Of Paid & Free Softwares, ProTools (Paid & Sucks) Has Had That Feature At Least A Decade Now. You Can Strip Any Instruments Or Vocals Now Days.

Respectfully disagree, first solo has an out of key chord. A chord progression with slow moving and in key chords is a better place to start i think, like comfortably numb for example. Have great day and keeo rocking ;) .

David, you can, but it requires purchase of high quality Multitracks in which you can play your lead and vocals along side the rest of the music. Means downloading and placing the multi's into your DAW or Digital Audio Workstation. Hopes this info helps you!

Uh but the horns they blowin' that sound
Way on down south
Way on down south
London town
You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords
Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing
They said an old guitar is all, he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't, make the scene
He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright
He can play the Honky Tonk like anything
Savin' it up, for Friday night
With the Sultans
We're the Sultans of Swing
Then a crowd a young boys they're a foolin' around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
They don't give a damn about any trumpet playin' band
It ain't what they call Rock and Roll
And the Sultans
Yeah, the Sultans, they play Creole
Creole
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
"Goodnight, now it's time to go home"
Then he makes it fast with one more thing
"We are the Sultans
