Hey Cruisers, Yay! It's day one of our fantastic 10 night Alaska cruise, and we are finally getting onboard the beautiful Grand Princess. Our Alaska cruise vlog picks up where our pre-cruise vlog left off, and we make the second half of our road trip to San Francisco. You're going to get a good look at the pier, and see some of the drop-off traffic congestion. Alaska cruise tip number 1; make sure to give yourself extra time to drop off your luggage. We are also going to give you an idea of available parking, and what we think is the best option. The check-in process went extremely smooth, and we were on the ship in no time. With the embarkation process behind us, we are ready to head to the room and scope out our spacious inside cabin. I'll give you a personal tour around the cabin, but we'll also have a full cabin tour in another video. After our inside cabin tour there is only the muster drill standing between us and the awesome sail away party. We always love sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge, and we get a spectacular view on this sailing. It was so much fun. We close out this cruise vlog with some pre-dinner drinks and relaxation in our favorite new place The One5, and a little summary wrap up of all the good things that happened on this lovely embarkation day. My first cruise to Alaska (way back in 1990 - I think) we had inside cabins and also had a back door (I don't even remember what ship we were on), so we could get up every morning - in the darkness of the inside cabins & then went right outside to a small back deck with some chairs & chaises - it was definitely a nice way to enjoy an inside cabin - being so close to the outside!! That was way before I even knew about balcony cabins!!
Great video Sheri! BTW - I survived Irma! One week with no electricity, no a/c, had to throw out everything in my fridge & freezer - sent the dogs to the doggy sitter (they had a/c) & when the power came back I found out that my fan motor for the central a/c blew out! I'm finally back to nearly normal - have my internet back (it was out for 4 days) - the house is cool, the fridge restocked!! I'm back & so glad to see this video!!

OMG! Those compression bags look amazing!! The one downside to the Grand Princess was the size of the closet. Thankfully, they've made the closets bigger after that ship! Lol

Love, love, love this vlog entry. I began by making a mental note that I will never sail out of San Francisco because of the hassle getting there, but, my goodness, the views and sights more than make up for it.
My wife and I will be doing our first cruise in 26 days, embarking on the Freedom of the Seas from Ft. Lauderdale for the western Caribbean and could not more excited. Love your work. Thanks for sharing.

Beautiful sweater!! I love it. San Francisco is one of my favorite cities but it does take forever to get anywhere.
We couldn't do our Ruby Princess cruise in these aft cabins (Had R732), so we re-booked on a 14nt Star Princess cabin A716 with my mom & dad who are in A740 to Alaska! It was SO much cheaper to book an inside. At least $3000 per cabin!

So glad I discovered your vlog. Our first cruise in 2013 was on Grand Princess out of FtLauderdale, were from the uk. Since then we have done 4 more and have 2 booked for next year. Not Princess though . We were only talking today about Alaska and would love to do the Grand again, we loved that ship.
Living vicariously through these vlogs!! Alaska is on my list, but hubby isn't sold yet. We'll see how persuasive I can be.
Jennifer Stith it is BY FAR the best cruise there is. We have done them all except for Bermuda, and so far, it was my favorite. Tell your husband that he won't regret it.

Ahh, Gilroy it's been a while for me could almost smell the garlic. On the way home you can have dinner at the Stinking Rose, a garlic restaurant in San Francisco, not too far up the hill from the wharf, neat place. Just got home from Aruba and finished watching Scott Singer's Alaska series and am looking forward to this one as well. I'm starting to get the Alaska itch between these videos and a HAL presentation we just went to a few weeks ago.

16 a day parking is cheap it's 300 for a 7 day cruise is NYC and 450 for a 10 day cruise
How was the noise from the deck above you? I've looked at these cabins, but didn't want to hear chairs scraping across the floor above us.
Why does the bathroom smell like vinegar? Is that what they use to clean with? The way you said, it made it sound like you expected it!

Looks great! LOVE your sweater, btw!! I live an hour away from SF and yes, when the marine layer isn't there, it is a beautiful sight! I have been told by friends that have done that cruise that the trip up the coast from SF is a very rough ride. What is your opinion on that?

We live in the center of the U.S. so when we do take a future Alaska cruise (and we will!), we will fly to the port. How do you repack all the bulky outerwear at the end of the cruise without the pump? BTW, I totally love your sweater and purple is a beautiful color on you. Looking forward to more vlogs!

I won't laugh, lol!! But that makes sense... what comes out of a suitcase HAS to go back in somehow. I've never used compression bags and in my mind, I imagined a great big pump.

We are booked for Oct. 7th on 8 day Eastern Carribean with the Vista. Worried because all of our islands have been destroyed that we were suppose to go to. And hurricane Maria is still out there right now, any advice?

My best advice, and we'll talk more about this ok Saturday's vlog, is to go with the flow on this one - once you find out your ports let me know! With carnival vista at the ship is kind of the destination so no matter where you go you're going to have a blast. Keep me posted on those ports!
Sounds like you got lucky with embarkation. My mother and I were cruising out of Vancouver on the 23rd with 2 other ships. We were some of the lucky ones I got on the ship in just under 2 hours and mum was about 10-15 minutes behind me. It was so crazy that as we were setting sail the captain in his welcome announcement apologised for the delays. It was also close to 90% humidity and around 68 degrees.
When did you cruise to Alaska? What is the best month to cruise there?
This cruise was late August, but we prefer mid to late May!

Our family booked an interior to Hawaii and a representative told us (along with past guests) the bed can be in "king" position with one pull down to use for our 3rd guest. Did you ask your steward for a different bed arrangement?
Yes, we've asked on our last three cruises with an inside, and they don't allow it.

When exactly did you cruise? We are planning ahead for a 2019 Alaskan cruise. We had some family members who sailed the first week of September and they experienced extremely WET weather the entire trip. We are thinking about maybe going in May. What month would you suggest?
