I just told my wife earlier today that when I get tired of bikes I might switch to riding lawnmowers. No titles and a relatively cheap and riskless venture. Get a whole shitload of them 😂
I actually sold a 90s John Deere with the water cooled Kawasaki to a guy about 2 months ago, and that's all he does is older JD riding mowers. Sounds like the dude makes a solid living on them!
I too love vintage Harleys. Especially rigids. However I recently switched to rigid triumphs. They run great compared to a shovel and are really easy to work on. Did you ever have or consider one? If not they are worth a try. Mine is so much fun and really reliable it’s a 66 TR6 rigid. Also I love your philosophy about saving and parting out. And your right. It’s a great way to hone your craft
I'm always paying for my education when it comes to motorcycles, which is fine. I picked up my first non runner a couple months ago thinking I'd get it running and then double my money. I got it running pretty quick (it just needed the carbs and gas tank cleaned) but I ended up putting way more into it than I thought I would. It's been a learning experience.
This is my problem. If I fix a bike up, I can't do the minimum just to make it run and ride. I'm always doing it in a manner that will make the bike no less than a bike I would gladly ride myself, and after that there's too much money and time into it to make any profit.
You hit on the first decision point…did you buy the bike for profit or pleasure? I did a mechanical restoration of a Honda CB750 in 2020 and 2021 and could maybe break even if I sold it. The problem is I’ve ridden it cross country and fell in love with it. Kudos to those who keep the fuel flowing and the pipes hot. It’s about soul.
I got a 1993 883 Sportster with a Title back in June. It was a Hacked Up Bobber Project. I ran across and got a 1990 Sportster 883 for part's to put the 93 back together. Fender's Exc.. The 90 bike has no trans or primary cover, Inward. So Basically Motor Front end Wheel's. I got what I wanted off of it but I would like to put it back on the road. Trans replacement is headed toward's TO MUCH!!!!! My 93 run's. 4 Speed for the 90 is looking to be MORE then I wanna put in it. Plus clutch and every thing under the Primary Cover. I have a part's bike.
Just found your channel Im in SC also, Camden. I agree, in SC, i wont buy a bike without a title unless i i need most of the parts. Ill be in Charlotte in a couple weeks, hope to see you there.
It`s too bad I`m not in a position to buy another bike, because I like that Ironhead with the sportbob tank & full back fender. I chastised a guy the other day for chopping a 75 Ironhead, because it was a complete original bike. It had been sitting & showed some age, but he went through it & it was a fine running bike with original paint & decals. The only thing he used was the engine. I know right now Sportster choppers are popular, but please don`t destroy a good bike to make one. Find a roach instead! Hopefully he sold the frame with title to someone. People are hurting for money right now. So good deals can be had, but selling is slow. So don`t over extend yourself by "stocking too much inventory" unless you just have money to burn & room to squirrel away future gold. They aren`t making any new Ironheads!
You are on the right track. Make your money when you buy. I’m surprised the iron head hasn’t sold. I always try to make a deal with the first one or two people that show up. Smitty
The problem is, nobody actually shows up these days. They all want to send low ball offers online, or say they're coming and then flake out. I talked to an older gentleman on the phone tonight, first person out of probably 50 responses who was actually willing to talk on the phone instead of text, and sounds like he'll be here in the morning. I bet we'll make a deal!

Put it in his lap. 😎 He might show up with his ramp and tiedowns. Here is a fun piece of advice. ….. When you fire the bike up. Watch the buyers hands. The noobs will immediately put their hand on their wallet. Sold!

With a little bit of work that Sportster running you could get a decent price for it as a whole bike .
The blue one is up for sale currently as a whole running bike. Hopefully it finds a new home soon!
