      TIPS:
      1. Watch videos online of the ones you are interested in.
      2. Don't buy whatever you just came across with, if you have the chance to watch a video or try it on a friend's table... go ahead!!! Ask as many questions you have. Remember mechanic and dynamic don't meet your expectations sometimes.
      3. Visit Game Board Shops with a friend, then... alone... You and your friend might have different taste. This is a way to find the perfect type for you, evaluating board games with friends and alone.
      4. Not all groups work the same. You can have party game friends, euro game friends, ameritrash game friends... so evaluate if purchasing a game can work for you, not your friends cause at the end of the day this new board game will remain at your home.
      5. Don't believe what BGG says... it could be rated as the worst board game; however, it could be the number one for you!
      6. Lean on the mechanic you feel more comfortable with, but not forget to try other options.
      7. Download the rulebooks of the games you are behind. They are free and they can help you to understand your doubts and if the game is made for you.
      8. Try at least once a solo game board. Playing with yourself is something can make you feel fearful. On the other hand, it can make you understand what you need.

A most welcome video! I have found that many modern games expect players to spend a considerable amount of time learning and revisiting the rules. This can be an off-putting hurdle for many people who thought that they could join the hobby by choosing an interesting looking game with the expectation of playing as soon as they open the box. Some game designers are now actively working to create an easier onboarding experience with innovative tutorials (such as Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion). I recommend choosing such a game if this has been a pain point for you or the people that you would like to play with. Once you play a few well constructed games, the mechanisms and rule types start to become more familiar.

it's common to play video games solo (before online social gaming exploded)...surprisingly BG solo is viewed as weird 😅

Great info but I wish you’d name the games we got a peek of during the video. That plant game in particular looked interesting!

Yes. I'm sorry. It was an oversight. The plant game is called Planted by Phil Walker Harding. I will remember to put labels in the future. Let me know if there were any other games you wanted to know more info about.

Thank you for making this video. This could be helpful for anyone in my circle or family who might be interested in this hobby.
I've been in this hobby for just 2 years. It feels like discovering a brand new world. At first I'd just buy some cheap boardgames, play BGA, or printing out PnP games to try a boardgame. But thankfully, the hobby community in my country is generous enough to give some games for free or offer games to be traded.

Thanks for explaining BBG! I'm not a beginner but found the site to be overwhelming! I know what I'll be doing tonight 😅

Catan looks plain, but it was so engaging and easy to learn at the game group. It has many mechanisms that are present in other games.

I check ratings with comments, status "own" vs "previously own". I'm wary of 8-9 rating for upcoming games -- anticipation does not translate to good game play 😅

What is the game @ 5:58? I'm getting into board games (as one might be able to guess since I'm watching this video) and that looks like the perfect thing for my girlfriend and I (She's a gardener) to try.

Its a gorgeous gateway game called 'Planted' by Phil Walker Harding. You can get it from Target if you live in the US or you can get it on Amazon. :)
