A quick and low-tech video I've made to show you how to section your own dreads. I hope this is sufficient. I might remake it if I wind up making dreads for anyone else and have an opportunity!!
Re-doing my dreads tonight, holy shit I should have watched this before I started doing them. I saw almost all your videos on dreadlocks, but for some reason never watched this one. Thank you so much, you're an angel.
Aww shucks! I am so glad this helps you! Enjoy making your dreads again- and if you're really patient with your sectioning it really does pay off pretty well in the end. :)
Best self-sectioning video on youtube :) I used it as a guide when I was sectioning/dreading the back of my head last night ^_^ Thank you! I don't think I could have pulled it off if it wasn't for this video... Sectioning fine hair is really intimidating when you have to tackle it alone, I really can't thank you enough! ❤❤❤
I followed your video to section my dreads, and I counted them and I have 35. Now that I'm watching everyones videos, I notice everyone has 90+. wha!? Do I just have a little head? lol
Well just wanted.to say you gave me the push i need to stat my dreads but i think i will go natural way so i feel like i earned them in.some way lol thank you
What is your take on rubber bands? Do you think its better to leave the rubber bands you use to part the dreads in for a few months or take them out right away?
This was extremely helpful! I've watched most of your dreadlock videos and I'm glad I watched this one before starting! I don't want to end up with dreadlocks sticking out because they're overlapping each other! I also wanted to ask if you used rubber bands to secure your locks when you first got them? I've seen some people applying a rubber band at the root and end to help secure the dreadlock. I'm planning on adding extensions, can I apply them right away or should I wait some time?
Rubber bands = no!!! Locks loop and tighten and mature with friction. They can't move like they need if you rubber band them and restrict their movement. If you need rubber bands to hold your locks together, your setup isn't tight enough. Here's my video about them- Dreadlocks and Rubber Bands (or Elastics, if you like) If your ends keep unraveling and troubling you, you can blunt the tips to prevent the unraveling. Rubber bands are a noooooo. :) As far as extensions, you need to wait 3-6 months before installing them. If you want to make your own, watch this entire video: Permanent Dread Extensions - how to make & install with synthetic hair (if you only want to learn how to install, skip to 15:30) I hope this helps!!
Oddly specific question. I’ve made dreads that I plan to permanently install onto my non dreaded hair. I plan to section my hair according to the thickness of the pre-back combed sections of synthetic hair I used. Is this correct?
Hey Astrid, super helpful video. Just wondering in your travels, what are your thoughts on fan sectioning vs how you go about it? I hear that fan sectioning gives really good coverage, but at the same time those individual sections are really weird shaped with the fan sectioning. Idk I'm just trying to hear what the "pros" have to say about it lol. Thanks! Great video btw:)
This is a late response, but I think fan sectioning is appropriate only for synth installs. If you want perfect coverage, go for honeycomb or diamond sectioning. It's a real pain in the ass to do, and damn near impossible to do on yourself, but it's worth it! :)
I'm trying to section the back of my head this way and I still don't understand how you managed to do it. I can't form form the lines and divide the sections using only one hand.
hmmmm.... well it took me a long time. ....I wish I had a better way of explaining it! Maybe you should have a friend help you out for the back. You just have to use the little rattail comb end and push it along your scalp in a straight line. Hold it in place, and put your finger along the comb, lifting all the hair above the comb up, and putting it into a ponytail (or two or three if your hair is a bit too short). It might take like... 10 or 15 tries, but a couple extra hours spent on sectioning will save you AGES of time over the course of you having locks. If you still can't do it by trying over and over again, really! get a friend to help you. Preferably a very very patient friend who will allow you to make them do the parts over and over until it is perfect. :) Have them part your hair, put the unwanted hair up, and check to see if you like their work. If you have limited time with them, braid the hair into its sections rather than making locks right then and there. :) I hope this helps!
***** unfortunately, I don't have any friends willing to help me which is why I'm trying to do it on my own. Your explanation still doesn't make sense. I can't push the comb in a straight line sideways because it just gets stuck in my hair. Adding my finger doesn't help me catch the above hair either. I also can't push any hair up with my finger. My hair is about 8 inches long so length certainly isn't the issue.
Well, I ... I dunno what to tell you. I am a female who has had longer hair for most of my life, so I am used to all these styling things and they are basically second nature for me. You don't use the teeth of the comb to part the hair. Use the end of a rattail comb. I mean... maybe just practice a lot before you get started? I wish I could just pop over to where you are and do it for you! I am sorry my descriptions are missing the mark for you. :(
***** Okay, I managed to figure out my own method for creating the lines. I can't do it one-handed like you since there is just too much hair for me too grab like that. My only problem now is creating the squares. I am having trouble grabbing an equal amount of hair for each section. How did you make the parts since didn't really explain it in this video?
Well, I did explain it in the video. I used the end of a rattail comb to get it perfectly straight. If you want to do something easy, just part the bottom row straight down the middle, then take one side, and go down the middle of that side, so you get 2 squares, then repeat with the other side. You should have 4 squares then. Ta daa.
hey there i have some dreads that are almost 2 inches squared theyre four months old now and i dont want to have to redo the big ones, but im a little worried because i only have three dreads on each side of my head in each section, if that makes sense, so im scared my ears are gonna show and my scalp and such and have just a row of very thick ones compaired to others, should i cut the squares in half and make triangles?
Hannah H They are 1 inch by 1 inch. 2x2 is WAY TOO HUGE seriously!!! You can easily redo the big ones. Just brush them out and re-make them in to 2-3 triangular sections. It is a pain, but if you do one per day, it will be a little effort spread out and it won't make you so weary!! but three on each side of your head? I mean... that's pretty big. Hmm... can you send me photos?

Considering redoing my dreads now! Didn't really plan them out! I started with one and it was so fun that I couldn't stop! I'm going to miss a few!

I know how to make the actual dread, but I wasn't so sure on how to place them. My friend wants me to dread her hair so this helped alot, thanks! :D

Ahhrrrgggghhh!😩 I'm in the midst of doing this now...its so frustrating lo
You make it look easy and awesome thoughl
just wanted to say that I lub your vids.

This is SO, SO helpful!!!
wow this was super helpful. thank you!
Excellent tips, thanks!
Thank you, this is SO helpful!
Thanks! I am planning on making my own extensions, I guess I'll just have to wait awhile to install them :p
