@@xavi431 As far as I know, it only goes to 480i because the AV processor they use can only handle 480i at most, and they are limited to very few processors because they need to maintain 240p compatibility, which is not very common. So if you wanted +480p compatibility, you would need to redesign the device and include two different processors, then include a switch between them. But at that point it would no longer be a plug and play device exactly, as you would have to get up and toggle the switch to play the incompatible games.
@@shotgunmasterQL well, if the cable between the adapter box and the console is short enough, you can change that out while you're swapping discs, since you have to get up to swap discs anyways. Also, plug and play tends to refer to the ability to just hook it up to the device and not have to do any dicking around in a configuration program or perform any hardware modification to get it working correctly. If all that you need to do is maybe flip a switch once in a while, I'd say that's still pretty damn plug and play.
Bob, just so you know, there is a shortage of ps2 480i footage with the Rad2x on CZcams. Please show some of that! I can't buy until I see the footage from a pro.

People probably ask about a PS3 version for capture purposes. The PS3 has always on HDCP on its HDMI port, and unless you get the right tat to strip the HDCP out, using the proprietary AV port is just better.
The RAD2X on a PS3 creates an HDCP free HDMI feed. When this is used with a Corsair El Gato Camlink and the windows 10 Camera app on a low spec PC, it becomes one of the most cost effective ways to capture gameplay on a PS3.
You can remove the HDCP with a $20 HDMI Splitter. If you don't want to buy a splitter, you can just get some component cables for $15. With component cables you'll be stuck 720p, but at least you won't have to downscale to 480i. There's no reason to downscale your PS3 to 480i.

The serial port only outputs a 3.5v rail but the parallel port has a 7.5v rail you could buck down to 5v.. was also thinking the ps1 has a internal 5v rail so you could make this a internal mod if you wanted to cut up a ps1... i'm not a huge fan of cutting up a good clean one but a beat up one might be fine... Might look into it if i find some spare money... also love your channel too ^__^
@@FritzCopyCat the original PlayStation has a internal psu so the power coming in is mains voltage (110v or 240v depending on where you live and also ac not dc) please dont mess around with mains voltage :( The slim PSOne has a external psu and has 7.5v dc coming into the console and yes you could make a breakout board for that but that would only work with the slim ps1s...
@@MobCat_ Note where I said "AC cable"-I know it's mains voltage. What I was suggesting is a brick that accepts AC, passes AC through to the PlayStation, and has a USB port to supply the 5 V DC to the RAD2X.
For PS3 you might want to use if if your HDMI output does, this is a common issue on the launch models that use a BGA HDMI encoder. On my console I use HDR component cables because I no longer get an image from HDMI
Being that these are based on the same tech as the retrotink2x i doubt we'll be getting dedicated cables for consoles such as the ps2, xbox, gamecube, and wii. Unless you can stand 480i bob deinterlaced.
@@ians_parks I know there's an internal mod being worked on now by @Ryzee119 (on Twitter), which I might hold out on. If not I'll probably snag a RetroTink2x down the road to cover the majority of my needs, which will still be a million times better than the drop ship HDMI cables I mentioned earlier.

For wanting to use it on the PS3, and this is a question I've had myself concerning several of these types and cheaper cables, is trying to use the PS3 with a capture card. The hardware HDCP inside of it make's it troublesome, if not frustratingly difficult to find solutions for PS3 recording. Trying to find an HDMI splitter that strips the HDCP reliably for say, using an Elgato capture card, has been getting more and more confusing the last couple of years. At least that's why I think It would be a question that's brought up.
@RetroRGB, the reason people ask about PS3 support this is likely because of streaming? The PS3 has HDCP that cannot be disabled under any circumstances, unlike the PS4. This means that in order to capture or stream PS3 games, you will need to be using a component cable to do so, and some capture devices do not have support for it (especially the Elgato HD60S, which is what I have).
There's many cheap ways to beat HDCP in both 720p and 1080p. Using this for streaming will result in deinterlaced 480i, which is terrible on a PS3. Just do some creative googling and you'll find the splitter you need.
Great video Bob! That's good to know that these PS1-intended RAD2x's work on a PS2, but for the moment I"m happy with my PS2 (as well as PS1 and Super Famicom) connected to a switcher via HDRetrovision component cables and finally connected to a RetroTink2x, of which is connected to a Razer Ripsaw USB 3 capture card, and with this setup I can get capture (and stream) some really nice footage from the aforementioned three consoles. The only thing is though, since the RAD2x is basically a miniaturized RetroTink2x, the SNES version of this cable likely won't play nice with my main PCI-E capture card, that being the Intensity Pro 4k, as I've mentioned on previous videos' comments. The sync is SLIGHTLY off kilter, and it's annoying, thus why I use the Ripsaw for any of my console sources that are non HDMI. Also I agree on the PS3 front... I don't understand why someone would want to run a PS3 in 480i/p only mode when there's an HDMI out solution already baked onto its logic board.... Are there people out there with only 480i/p capable CRT or early LCD TVs/displays? Maybe, but for me I've had HDMI capable displays for years... I can finally toss away my Vita TV! Let me explain- I'm using it mostly to play Silent Hill, since the game is actually unplayable on PS3 due to a sound glitch that could appear randomly. I have a Framemeister and a PS2, but I've been looking for a convenient Silent Hill solution for years now!
A quick workaround to that sound glitch on PS3 is to go to the options menu in-game and change the audio from stereo to mono, then back to stereo. Hope this helps!
I used s-video to retrotink mini currently and many games are too dark to enjoy. Does the Rad2x have similar problems with dark games like silent hill being hard to see or is it bright enough
Excellent video. I will wait for Dan Kunz (citrus3000psi) ps1 and ps2 internal mod personally. This is a good method for those who want good video quality no matter what console they use, not just a single one.
I hope the rad2x for the ps2 in the future , it will maybe possible with the sync on green (RGsB), in this way we'll get 480p in rgb mode and it can handles ps1 games.(as opposed to component who cannot). But rad2x should support 480p input of course.
What about burn ins for OLEDs and other flatscreens? Here is what OSSC manual warns about BOB deinterlacing: "Beware of using the OSSCs Line2x (bob) or Line4x (bob) deinterlacing modes on sources that display static graphics or text for a long period of time." junkerhq.net/xrgb/index.php?title=OSSC ..and you have also several cases where ossc user experienced burn ins with oleds. (even only temporary).
Another great video Bob. I have a question I haven't seen answered in all the retro gaming videos I watched from all CZcamsrs. Does a powered HDMI switch add lag? My goal is to ultimately have all my consoles output HDMI. My AV receiver only has 6 HDMI inputs so a HDMI switch is necessary. I guess that adds another question. Do AV receivers like those from Yamaha add lag? Many of them also offer to upscale all inputs both HDMI and analog for output to the TV. I suppose that may cause additional issues versus connecting the console's HDMI output directly to the TV. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks and keep up the good work.

So, whilst I was looking around for cables, I noticed that this was a thing, and it looks like the sort of thing I could absolutely find useful. Now, I wouldn't mind grabbing one of these for my PS1/2, but there is one thing I need to find out. Basically, I need to know whether or not the resolution switching from 240p to 480i will freak an Elgato HD60 S out. I'm struggling with recording games being processed through my OSSC because of the res switching, and it's getting a wee bit annoying.

I just did set up the rad2x cable, but the problem is that everything is in black and white only ! I hooked it up to a PC HDMI Screen. Does anybody knows what's going on and how to fix it ? edit: since i live in germany i do have a PAL Region PS2 slim and my version is SCPH-70004

It just means the RAD2x won't convert the signal. So if your game is PAL, your TV needs to be compatible with PAL and if your game is NTSC, your TV needs to be compatible with NTSC.

@RetroRGB If I use an official PS1 RGB SCART cable to connect my PS1 to my LCD TV I can see horrible dithering and pixilation on games such as Gran Turismo 1 and Resident Evil Director's Cut for example. If I connect my PS1 to the OSSC with a PS1 RGB SCART PACKAPUNCH cable or RetroGamingCables component cable then will I still be able to see that dithering or does the proper scaling and conversion of the OSSC remove the dithering? Just wondering because you said the OSSC is better than the RetroTINK products. Also is the pixellation removed when using the OSSC or can that only be done when using the RetroTINK 2X Pro or Rad2X due to it's smoothing filter? The Mcable doesn't work with the OSSC so if you still get the pixellation when using an OSSC then is there any other HDMI smoothing device that can be used to connect to the output of the OSSC?
Been thinking for a long while to get a HD retrovision adapter/Retrotink2x for my ps1, however this seems like a better solution. Eepecially since it seems to be a actual solution to the 480p menu problem most upscalers have.
Correct, it's exactly the same. My suggestion is to choose the most cost-effective solution: For only one or two consoles, pick the RAD2x. For a whole bunch of consoles and support for composite, s-video and component, head over to Castlemania and grab a RetroTINK2x and whatever cable you need.

This may have already been covered in another video but on a LG OLED is it better quality wise to play PS1 games on Playstation 3 since it has HDMI out or playing on an original PS1 console with S-video to a retrotink? Or a Ps1 console with this RAD2x/Retrotink? I'm not too technical so I'm not sure how the PS3 handles the PS1 emulation and outputs. Thanks!
In my testing, I've found that RGB from an original PlayStation (or component video from a PS2) into a RetroTINK 5x looked far better than PS1 through PS3. If you mean RetroTINK 2x / RAD2x, it'll be a bit better though the PS3. So, if you already have a PS3, give it a try...if you like the results, consider it a win! :)
The OSSC can't do it either. It's a real shame indeed for the games that change resolution, but there aren't too many of them. For games like Silent Hill I use a ps3.
For PS2 usage, does it suffer from the same burn-in issues that the Retrotink 2x does? I didn't read the fine print on that last time (along with many others) and got "burned". If it does you should add a warning in the notes.
@@RetroRGB Bob, agreed it will not happen on all TVs however, this is right out of the RetroTINK 2x quick-start guide page 6 RE: interlaced video: "Beware of using the RetroTINK 2Xs deinterlacer on sources that display static graphics or text for a long period of time. The constant flickering can cause image retention/burn-in to occur faster than normal." - if I use PS2 which is mostly running 480i with Retrotink 2X I get serious image retention after just a few minutes. This is going to be a common issue for a lot of people and I just think they should be aware. 240p sources work great and have zero retention even after hours.
@@dantaipan To further clarify, burn-in, AFAIK is not a thing for LCDs. Image retention goes away after some time and not a permanent effect. Susceptibility depends on the quality of the LCD panel and not the video source generating the image.

I think why people ask about ps3 support because PS3 has HDCP and capture cards doesn't work because of that but if you use converter like in this video then you can use a capture card.

I recently dug out my old PS1 from the mancave. My daughter gave me a PS4 that her and her guy don't use anymore, but I got the burn to play the ATV game I used to be pretty good at (its the only one I could beat the kids at) I can't find the av cable. Might be moot. It wouldn't power up with the cord I found. I have a 12 year old flat screen that I think it will work with. I can watch vcr tapes on it. In a pawn shop the other day while gun shopping, I saw the last version of the PS1. They didn't have any cords for it either. I'm tempted to offer him 10 bucks to get it out of his life. His guns are over-priced like everywhere else nowdays. I'm wondering if you can play PS1 games on a PS2 console. I have some PS2 games stored away in one of my rent houses. Is there a delay between turning the system on and getting a picture/audio? I'd hate to miss the sweet, sweet sound of the ps1 boot screen. My Carby suffers from this, which is very disappointing.

No, that's exactly the same and an excellent solution. I WOULD recommend this over PS2 + HDRetrovisions plugged directly into a TV, as almost every TV I've ever tested will be VERY laggy over 480i. Then just go direct when using 480p, as shown in the video.

You buy them from retro gaming cables uk. Batches sell out rather quickly and demand is high. The corona virus affecting shipments isnt really helping the situation. You'll just have to try and keep up with when they restock. I'd recommend following them on twitter for updates.
If you already own a PS3, give that a try and see how it works for you. I found PS1 games to look pretty terrible through the PS3, but other people have better luck. Also, PSN versions sometimes look better than discs...not even sure how that's possible. But to answer your question, this is the best potential for video quality output from PS1 games using original hardware, with smoothing and deinterlacing options. It might not be worth the cost for some people, while other people think it's worth every penny.
There seems to be a sort of blinking or short flicker of the screen whenever you open the inventory in RE2 in the vid when using the Rad2x. I get that it's because of the resolution shift, but is there currently a way to avoid this? I'd love to use this cable for my ps1 for it's convenience and quality.
It might act differently on different TV's with different games. I noticed it too, but it didn't bother me, as it only happened going into the menu, not going back into the game.

PS3 plays PS1 games via emulation, so there's a handful of games that don't work or don't play correctly. This is a game that is known to not work on PS3.
The hdmi dynamic range looks off. It shouldn't look that dark. I don't have one of these but my pound cable was dark in Limited and once I changed it to Full it was perfect.
Would it be ok or insufficient if I supply the power to the RAD2X from my TV's USB port instead of a power supply since it doesn't require much? It's a LG B6 OLED.
Can anybody give me some advice ? Currently using one of these with a PAL PS1, however I can only seem to get a yellow light out of it (meaning composite signal). Why can I not seem to get a purple light (for RGB signal) ?

while this cable looks great, im not interrested in it because i already have an OSSC, but, im one of those weird people who has his PS3 hooked up to a ps2 component cable and downgrades the quality to 480p. why? to add scanlines with the OSSC on many of the arcade games. stuff like outrun or after burner climax look way cooler on 480p with scanlines from the ossc than the ultra clean hdmi look. But thats just a personal preference!!
Well, that makes perfect sense - And in my personal opinion, certain old movies with lots of film grain look AWESOME when played in 480p through an OSSC with light scanlines on.

Okay, I think the best option for you is an OSSC or RetroTINK 5x. The 5x is more expensive, but it has many features. The OSSC will ONLY work with RGB SCART (not S-Video or composite), but it's cheaper and should work with the Elgato in at least one of its output modes. Id assume it handles the ps2 just as well as the retrotink2x, in that it line doubles 480i to 480p via bob deinterlacing but doesnt accept 480p by default. This is faster than if you were to rely on simply using 480i pass through but the trade off is an image thats a little flickery.

For the ps3 people might want it cause the HDMI connection has HDCP that is always on. They might want to use HDMI for their setup without the headache of HDCP.
The ps3 is a good source to play your classics. but there are games that don't emulate well. That's why I look for the alternative like this. To skip the HDCP and capture your gameplay, an HDMI Switch is used

Love your videos and everything, but why cover products that are not available to buy? You can't even preorder it (extra slap in the face as there's a Black Friday sale we can't use).
The reason they did this is because Mike Chi only designed the Retrotink to support inputs of Y,Pb,Pr / S-Video and Composite - he did not give it RGB. So instead of designing a proper RGB to HDMI solution which would have been better - it was much cheaper to implement the current design into a cable. I also would have preferred a "High-End" converter with clean crisp video. But this was designed purely to take on the cheap solutions out there.
It's not that Mike "did not give it RGB". The chip at the heart of the RetroTINK 2x doesn't support RGB input, so even if Mike added RGB support to the TINK, it would still be an RGB to YPbPr conversion (just like the RAD2X is doing). I'm guessing proper RGB support would require an FPGA, and that point you might as well be building an OSSC.
I don't think RGB is in the hdmi specification for the lower resolutions such as 480i, 480p etc, only Chroma (YCbCr colorspace.). @@xavi431 As far as I know, it only goes to 480i because the AV processor they use can only handle 480i at most, and they are limited to very few processors because they need to maintain 240p compatibility, which is not very common.
So if you wanted +480p compatibility, you would need to redesign the device and include two different processors, then include a switch between them.
But at that point it would no longer be a plug and play device exactly, as you would have to get up and toggle the switch to play the incompatible games.
@@shotgunmasterQL well, if the cable between the adapter box and the console is short enough, you can change that out while you're swapping discs, since you have to get up to swap discs anyways. Also, plug and play tends to refer to the ability to just hook it up to the device and not have to do any dicking around in a configuration program or perform any hardware modification to get it working correctly. If all that you need to do is maybe flip a switch once in a while, I'd say that's still pretty damn plug and play.

I think it to capture old ps1/ps2 games because if I remember right HDMI and HDCP were a bitch on the ps3.
People probably ask about a PS3 version for capture purposes. The PS3 has always on HDCP on its HDMI port, and unless you get the right tat to strip the HDCP out, using the proprietary AV port is just better.
The RAD2X on a PS3 creates an HDCP free HDMI feed. When this is used with a Corsair El Gato Camlink and the windows 10 Camera app on a low spec PC, it becomes one of the most cost effective ways to capture gameplay on a PS3.
You can remove the HDCP with a $20 HDMI Splitter. If you don't want to buy a splitter, you can just get some component cables for $15. With component cables you'll be stuck 720p, but at least you won't have to downscale to 480i. There's no reason to downscale your PS3 to 480i.

The serial port only outputs a 3.5v rail but the parallel port has a 7.5v rail you could buck down to 5v..
was also thinking the ps1 has a internal 5v rail so you could make this a internal mod if you wanted to cut up a ps1... i'm not a huge fan of cutting up a good clean one but a beat up one might be fine... Might look into it if i find some spare money...

Somebody could design a USB power adaptor that plugs in-line with the PlayStation's AC cable, if they really wanted to.

The slim PSOne has a external psu and has 7.5v dc coming into the console and yes you could make a breakout board for that but that would only work with the slim ps1s...

I like the flicker. The whole reason to play on these consoles is the nostalgia.
For PS3 you might want to use if if your HDMI output does, this is a common issue on the launch models that use a BGA HDMI encoder. On my console I use HDR component cables because I no longer get an image from HDMI

Being that these are based on the same tech as the retrotink2x i doubt we'll be getting dedicated cables for consoles such as the ps2, xbox, gamecube, and wii. Unless you can stand 480i bob deinterlaced.

If not I'll probably snag a RetroTink2x down the road to cover the majority of my needs, which will still be a million times better than the drop ship HDMI cables I mentioned earlier.

For wanting to use it on the PS3, and this is a question I've had myself concerning several of these types and cheaper cables, is trying to use the PS3 with a capture card. The hardware HDCP inside of it make's it troublesome, if not frustratingly difficult to find solutions for PS3 recording.
Trying to find an HDMI splitter that strips the HDCP reliably for say, using an Elgato capture card, has been getting more and more confusing the last couple of years. At least that's why I think It would be a question that's brought up.

How well does the RAD2x deal with non-standard output from the PlayStation, such as when playing NTSC games on a PAL console?
@RetroRGB, the reason people ask about PS3 support this is likely because of streaming? The PS3 has HDCP that cannot be disabled under any circumstances, unlike the PS4. This means that in order to capture or stream PS3 games, you will need to be using a component cable to do so, and some capture devices do not have support for it (especially the Elgato HD60S, which is what I have).
There's many cheap ways to beat HDCP in both 720p and 1080p. Using this for streaming will result in deinterlaced 480i, which is terrible on a PS3. Just do some creative googling and you'll find the splitter you need.
GokaiSanyu Just use an HDMI splitter that bypasses the HDCP and you can record games with HDMI on PS3, I been doing this for years with no issues.
Great video Bob! That's good to know that these PS1-intended RAD2x's work on a PS2, but for the moment I"m happy with my PS2 (as well as PS1 and Super Famicom) connected to a switcher via HDRetrovision component cables and finally connected to a RetroTink2x, of which is connected to a Razer Ripsaw USB 3 capture card, and with this setup I can get capture (and stream) some really nice footage from the aforementioned three consoles. The only thing is though, since the RAD2x is basically a miniaturized RetroTink2x, the SNES version of this cable likely won't play nice with my main PCI-E capture card, that being the Intensity Pro 4k, as I've mentioned on previous videos' comments. The sync is SLIGHTLY off kilter, and it's annoying, thus why I use the Ripsaw for any of my console sources that are non HDMI. Also I agree on the PS3 front... I don't understand why someone would want to run a PS3 in 480i/p only mode when there's an HDMI out solution already baked onto its logic board.... Are there people out there with only 480i/p capable CRT or early LCD TVs/displays? Maybe, but for me I've had HDMI capable displays for years... Anyway, great video, and I look forward to your coverage on the other RAD2x cables that Mike Chi puts out!

I can finally toss away my Vita TV! Let me explain- I'm using it mostly to play Silent Hill, since the game is actually unplayable on PS3 due to a sound glitch that could appear randomly. I have a Framemeister and a PS2, but I've been looking for a convenient Silent Hill solution for years now!

A quick workaround to that sound glitch on PS3 is to go to the options menu in-game and change the audio from stereo to mono, then back to stereo. Hope this helps!

I used s-video to retrotink mini currently and many games are too dark to enjoy. Does the Rad2x have similar problems with dark games like silent hill being hard to see or is it bright enough
Excellent video. I will wait for Dan Kunz (citrus3000psi) ps1 and ps2 internal mod personally. This is a good method for those who want good video quality no matter what console they use, not just a single one.
I hope the rad2x for the ps2 in the future , it will maybe possible with the sync on green (RGsB), in this way we'll get 480p in rgb mode and it can handles ps1 games.(as opposed to component who cannot). But rad2x should support 480p input of course.

..and you have also several cases where ossc user experienced burn ins with oleds. (even only temporary).
Whatever scaler you use will have no bearing on burn-in. That's all on the panel itself.

Another great video Bob. I have a question I haven't seen answered in all the retro gaming videos I watched from all CZcamsrs. Does a powered HDMI switch add lag? My goal is to ultimately have all my consoles output HDMI. My AV receiver only has 6 HDMI inputs so a HDMI switch is necessary. I guess that adds another question. Do AV receivers like those from Yamaha add lag? Many of them also offer to upscale all inputs both HDMI and analog for output to the TV. I suppose that may cause additional issues versus connecting the console's HDMI output directly to the TV. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks and keep up the good work.

So, whilst I was looking around for cables, I noticed that this was a thing, and it looks like the sort of thing I could absolutely find useful.
Now, I wouldn't mind grabbing one of these for my PS1/2, but there is one thing I need to find out. Basically, I need to know whether or not the resolution switching from 240p to 480i will freak an Elgato HD60 S out. I'm struggling with recording games being processed through my OSSC because of the res switching, and it's getting a wee bit annoying.
Should bit a bit better than the OSSC like shown in the video, but I haven't personally tried the Elgato.

The manufacturer suggests setting PS2 to RGB compensates for the 480p limitation. Anyone had any luck with that?

Other than the few that are 240p, don't ALL PS2 games default to 480i? Yes, some have optional 480p or 1080i, but all should work at 480i.

It just means the RAD2x won't convert the signal. So if your game is PAL, your TV needs to be compatible with PAL and if your game is NTSC, your TV needs to be compatible with NTSC.

@RetroRGB If I use an official PS1 RGB SCART cable to connect my PS1 to my LCD TV I can see horrible dithering and pixilation on games such as Gran Turismo 1 and Resident Evil Director's Cut for example. If I connect my PS1 to the OSSC with a PS1 RGB SCART PACKAPUNCH cable or RetroGamingCables component cable then will I still be able to see that dithering or does the proper scaling and conversion of the OSSC remove the dithering? Just wondering because you said the OSSC is better than the RetroTINK products.
Also is the pixellation removed when using the OSSC or can that only be done when using the RetroTINK 2X Pro or Rad2X due to it's smoothing filter?
The Mcable doesn't work with the OSSC so if you still get the pixellation when using an OSSC then is there any other HDMI smoothing device that can be used to connect to the output of the OSSC?
Been thinking for a long while to get a HD retrovision adapter/Retrotink2x for my ps1, however this seems like a better solution. Eepecially since it seems to be a actual solution to the 480p menu problem most upscalers have.
Correct, it's exactly the same. My suggestion is to choose the most cost-effective solution: For only one or two consoles, pick the RAD2x. For a whole bunch of consoles and support for composite, s-video and component, head over to Castlemania and grab a RetroTINK2x and whatever cable you need.

This may have already been covered in another video but on a LG OLED is it better quality wise to play PS1 games on Playstation 3 since it has HDMI out or playing on an original PS1 console with S-video to a retrotink? Or a Ps1 console with this RAD2x/Retrotink? I'm not too technical so I'm not sure how the PS3 handles the PS1 emulation and outputs. Thanks!
In my testing, I've found that RGB from an original PlayStation (or component video from a PS2) into a RetroTINK 5x looked far better than PS1 through PS3.
If you mean RetroTINK 2x / RAD2x, it'll be a bit better though the PS3. So, if you already have a PS3, give it a try...if you like the results, consider it a win! :)

The OSSC can't do it either. It's a real shame indeed for the games that change resolution, but there aren't too many of them. For games like Silent Hill I use a ps3.

For PS2 usage, does it suffer from the same burn-in issues that the Retrotink 2x does? I didn't read the fine print on that last time (along with many others) and got "burned". If it does you should add a warning in the notes.
Burn-in only has to do with your TV, not the scaler. The RetroTINK2x doesn't cause burn-in. That's completely ridiculous.
@@RetroRGB Bob, agreed it will not happen on all TVs however, this is right out of the RetroTINK 2x quick-start guide page 6 RE: interlaced video: "Beware of using the RetroTINK 2Xs deinterlacer on sources that display static graphics or text for a long period of time. The constant flickering can cause image retention/burn-in to occur faster than normal." - if I use PS2 which is mostly running 480i with Retrotink 2X I get serious image retention after just a few minutes. This is going to be a common issue for a lot of people and I just think they should be aware. 240p sources work great and have zero retention even after hours.
@@dantaipan To further clarify, burn-in, AFAIK is not a thing for LCDs. Image retention goes away after some time and not a permanent effect. Susceptibility depends on the quality of the LCD panel and not the video source generating the image.

I recently dug out my old PS1 from the mancave. My daughter gave me a PS4 that her and her guy don't use anymore, but I got the burn to play the ATV game I used to be pretty good at (its the only one I could beat the kids at) I can't find the av cable. Might be moot. It wouldn't power up with the cord I found. I have a 12 year old flat screen that I think it will work with. I can watch vcr tapes on it. Does the audio cut out when you switch resolutions? It looks like it switches fast but if the audio goes in and out, maybe I'll just stick to PS3 or PSTV for the troublesome games.
It's dependent on your TV. Some switch quicker than others with no audio cuts.

How this compare to playing a game on a good crt monitor?
Is there a delay between turning the system on and getting a picture/audio? I'd hate to miss the sweet, sweet sound of the ps1 boot screen. My Carby suffers from this, which is very disappointing.

No, that's exactly the same and an excellent solution.
I WOULD recommend this over PS2 + HDRetrovisions plugged directly into a TV, as almost every TV I've ever tested will be VERY laggy over 480i. Then just go direct when using 480p, as shown in the video.

You buy them from retro gaming cables uk. Batches sell out rather quickly and demand is high. The corona virus affecting shipments isnt really helping the situation. You'll just have to try and keep up with when they restock. I'd recommend following them on twitter for updates.

If you already own a PS3, give that a try and see how it works for you. I found PS1 games to look pretty terrible through the PS3, but other people have better luck. Also, PSN versions sometimes look better than discs...not even sure how that's possible.
But to answer your question, this is the best potential for video quality output from PS1 games using original hardware, with smoothing and deinterlacing options. It might not be worth the cost for some people, while other people think it's worth every penny.
There seems to be a sort of blinking or short flicker of the screen whenever you open the inventory in RE2 in the vid when using the Rad2x. I get that it's because of the resolution shift, but is there currently a way to avoid this? I'd love to use this cable for my ps1 for it's convenience and quality.
It might act differently on different TV's with different games. I noticed it too, but it didn't bother me, as it only happened going into the menu, not going back into the game.

I tried to buy a RAD2x for n64 today, the RGC website appears to say pre-orders are open and you can add to cart but then says it's out of stock and unable to buy at checkout. confused. Have the pre-orders sold out?

Why doesnt the playstion 1 game star wars rebel assault play on the ps3?
PS3 plays PS1 games via emulation, so there's a handful of games that don't work or don't play correctly. This is a game that is known to not work on PS3.
I have no idea. Maybe it is not compatible. There is a large percentage of games that can be emulated.
The hdmi dynamic range looks off. It shouldn't look that dark. I don't have one of these but my pound cable was dark in Limited and once I changed it to Full it was perfect.

Would it be ok or insufficient if I supply the power to the RAD2X from my TV's USB port instead of a power supply since it doesn't require much? It's a LG B6 OLED.

Can anybody give me some advice ? Currently using one of these with a PAL PS1, however I can only seem to get a yellow light out of it (meaning composite signal). Why can I not seem to get a purple light (for RGB signal) ?
Try powering on the console first, then the RAD2x second.

while this cable looks great, im not interrested in it because i already have an OSSC, but, im one of those weird people who has his PS3 hooked up to a ps2 component cable and downgrades the quality to 480p. why? to add scanlines with the OSSC on many of the arcade games. stuff like outrun or after burner climax look way cooler on 480p with scanlines from the ossc than the ultra clean hdmi look. But thats just a personal preference!!
Well, that makes perfect sense - And in my personal opinion, certain old movies with lots of film grain look AWESOME when played in 480p through an OSSC with light scanlines on.

It's inputs are the following below:
. HDMI input connection;
. DVI input connection;
. Component input connection;
. EuroScart input connection.
I own cables like:
. Scart to S-video connection;
. Scart to Scart connection;
Other equipment that i use too:
. A Scart splitter;
. An individual Scart input with S-Vídeo and Composite as output;
. An Elgato Game Capture HD capture card and thats what i want to use to record everything i can if possible;
. A AV2HDMI converter (not bad at all but the true game colors... I dont think they are there);
. And for last, an Scart to HDMI HD video converter (it records to much britness!!!).
To be honest... I dont think i'am missing anything else.

Okay, I think the best option for you is an OSSC or RetroTINK 5x. The 5x is more expensive, but it has many features. The OSSC will ONLY work with RGB SCART (not S-Video or composite), but it's cheaper and should work with the Elgato in at least one of its output modes.
Then just get any cheap HDMI splitter and send one output to your TV and the other to your Elgato.

How well does this cable work with a PS2?
Id assume it handles the ps2 just as well as the retrotink2x, in that it line doubles 480i to 480p via bob deinterlacing but doesnt accept 480p by default. This is faster than if you were to rely on simply using 480i pass through but the trade off is an image thats a little flickery.

If even the USB 1.1 ports on a PS2 will suffice, you'll be more than good to go with one of your TV's USB 2.0 ports. It works on mine like a charm.

PS3 is emulation. If you're fine with that and all it entails, go ahead.
For the ps3 people might want it cause the HDMI connection has HDCP that is always on. They might want to use HDMI for their setup without the headache of HDCP.
The ps3 is a good source to play your classics. but there are games that don't emulate well. That's why I look for the alternative like this. To skip the HDCP and capture your gameplay, an HDMI Switch is used

For the Playstation 2 games that are 480i, would you get a better image by combining the Rad X2 with the mclassic?
@@user-rd5wj2mm8n It's the opposite. The Mclassic's results can be seen because it's a filter. The real question is whether it would be compatible with the signal from this cable.
@@user-rd5wj2mm8n They really are, from what's been shown by multiple video game reviewers they provide at most a more saturated images and maybe some blur on pixelated edges on 3d games but that's it. They don't do much
@Luke Sanders - Yes, it's compatible with the mClassic. "better image" is subjective though. Please check out the Saturn RAD2x review I did that shows what it would look like in detail.

Just tested this on a PS1 and found the picture to be very, very soft. The PSIO main menu is so blurry using RAD2x
The menu is blurry because it's 480i. I cover this in detail in the video.

The reason they did this is because Mike Chi only designed the Retrotink to support inputs of Y,Pb,Pr / S-Video and Composite - he did not give it RGB.
So instead of designing a proper RGB to HDMI solution which would have been better - it was much cheaper to implement the current design into a cable.
I also would have preferred a "High-End" converter with clean crisp video. But this was designed purely to take on the cheap solutions out there.
It's not that Mike "did not give it RGB". The chip at the heart of the RetroTINK 2x doesn't support RGB input, so even if Mike added RGB support to the TINK, it would still be an RGB to YPbPr conversion (just like the RAD2X is doing). I'm guessing proper RGB support would require an FPGA, and that point you might as well be building an OSSC.
I don't think RGB is in the hdmi specification for the lower resolutions such as 480i, 480p etc, only Chroma (YCbCr colorspace.). Check pdf link below on page 44, higher resolutions such as 1080/50-60p has it included though.

I think you're completely missing the point of this cable. You should stick with an OSSC and not watch anymore of these RAD2x videos.
Mmm just to clarify, it indeed converts RGB to RGB hdmi. Ps1 doesnt even have Component support, nor Saturn, N64, Genesis and SNES.
