On Oct. 5 1878, an American preacher and social reformer named James F. Clarke delivered a timeless speech on manliness to a ministry of young men in Boston, Massachusetts.
'A false notion of manliness leads boys astray.'
I needed to hear that.
I do not have a father who told me how to be a good man.
I had books. I had stories. I have dead fathers who tought me beyond their graves.
Thank you for giving them a voice to speak to their unkown sons, for they have no one to turn to.
This gave me hope. Thank you.
You have a heavenly Father.. Jesus.
@@Stan-lf4nz The heavenly father is God, not Jesus.
@@Stan-lf4nz Heel is right. Jesus is the messenger, the holy spirit the community and God our father. :3
True manliness is heroism and giving without expecting to be getting anything back.

I just turned 35 - not sure if I'm really a "young man" anymore, and who this poem is for, but this speech cleared up a lot of toxicity in my mind. Thanks - it was beautiful.
Toxicity, care to provide an example?
Never stop pursuing to become the best man that you can be. As challenging as it may seem to be to pursue manhood in today climate with all the bad references to it and not many role models, being a man means also facing challenges, regardless of what these may be.
I wish you strength and willpower to pursue such a goal, and discipline to not stop when you will face difficulties.
All the best to you!
@@bettermanchannel770 the toxicity being not focusing on protecting the weak. Using your strength to help people and the opposite being using your strength to enforce your own opinions

This video made me think about my Dad. He was always imposing when I was a child. Not in a bad way. He seemed like someone who was best not to be angered. Who would fight off a bear with his bare hands if he had to in order to protect me. As a child, he seemed strong, likely due to the physical demands of his work. But he was nurturing and always encouraged me to walk a righteous path. When our community couldn't find a Santa Claus for the Christmas Party, he reluctantly volunteered to put on the suit and play the roll. In the end, he enjoyed it, maybe more than we realized. He volunteered every year since. Every December 1st, he would sit outside our local pharmacy to collect donations of cash or toys. He took the role seriously. Always suiting up before going to a Christmas Party. Never wanting to risk a child seeing Santa without his beard. He did this for many years, ensuring there was always ample toys so every child got several presents. He would visit the children in the neighborhood as Santa, especially families in financial hardships. He worked with our Non-Profit organizations to improve our community. When he did a charitable act, he never asked for payment. As Santa, he would simply ask them to donate toys or money, never setting a price. He only asked them to offer an amount they could, though he never asked anything of the poor.
Then came Covid. Dad disappeared from the public, they didn't know why. They figured due to Covid Lockdowns, he must have felt it best to stay home and not possibly spread the virus. In truth, he contracted Covid in Mid to early November from his best friend. By the 22nd or 23rd, he was in the hospital. By this time, we all tested positive for Covid and isolated until the beginning of December. Those in the community knew what was happening and offered any assistance to Mom. Dad eventually went onto a ventilator. By December 14th, his brain was starved of oxygen due to viral fluid building up in his lungs. Care was withdrawn and family was actually allowed to be there as he passed away from this world.
Mom called the local pharmacy, who didn't know about Dad's condition and that he passed. They said many of their employees, and regular customers, have been asking where he was. Everyone was saddened. They put out a board explaining what had happened and why Dad sat outside as Santa every year. So many left donations of cash. Some, including employees there, purchased toys and donated them too. The Manager at Walgreens even donated toys in Dad's memory. Letters of condolences and donations in Dad's memory came in almost every day. We were worried if we would have enough toys for the next Christmas Party. I can say now that our supply of toys is overflowing.
He was an example of how to be a real man. I can only hope that I can grow into a man who is worthy of filling his shoes.
I think I could say in the name of all here that your Dad was a real example, you had an exemplar and extraordinary father to inspire by. Now let him proud of what man you are become
Your dad was great
Live up to his legacy
Son of a gun, this made me break.
He was a man.
One of the good things or maybe even the only one of seeing a good man pass away is seeing just how much joy and kindness he brought upon the world and how many will remember him with a smile etched upon their hearts, to see that such men still exist is the only beacon of hope to our species, there is good inside all of us and letting it out is a choise.
Some men become legends not for their migth or their accomplishments, they become legends because of their kindness.
I shall offer a toast in honor of your father who embodied a Santa that Children could look up to, as a man and as great father and I hope, one day I will be half the man he was.
You had a good Daddy it sounds like. There needs to be more men like him today in this world we live in. It would for sure be a better place. May God bless you and your family.
This poem is not just for young, but for all men. It takes time to be a true man.
I'm 61 and gained a lot from this. I think sometimes we need these words even more as we grow older. Reminders of how we should be as good men. Examples for the younger.
100% agree! Man benefits from reminders.
All the best in your life.
The young no longer listen to their elders, due to their public school brainwashing and lack of a father, no a Bo Dyke cannot be a substitute for a father no more than a man can be a substitute for a mother!
And a man, a man provides. And he does it even when he's not appreciated, or respected, or even loved. He simply bears up and he does it. Because he's a man.
- Gus Fring
Brilliant.
I like how no one notices the true purpose of that phrase.
Just as with any man, appealing to selflessness is manipulation.
Gus wanted to manipulate Walter into staying. To keep working as the mule, I mean male, he was being told he is, even when said definition was detrimental. There's no denial in the negativity of Walter, but pretending that little phrase was virtuous is disingenuous or ignorant. Choose whichever fits your case guys.
To be a man is to bear responsibility of all the heaviest things.
Walter White
@@ruanoosthuizen6084 I believe that's applicable to all human beings within our physical and mental capabilities. My mother was the sole bearer of the responsabilities in my family because my father died, and she brought us out of poverty. She is not physically strong as a man, overworked hours and messed up her back. What I am trying to say here, is that as long as you face up your responsibilities in life man or woman with a partner or not, you will be as much as a man as the poem describes. You have to aspire to be a better human being. Recognizing your weaknesses and strengths, and finding value in them. Your self steem will help you avoid people that take advantage of you and your weakness will help you be kind to others who are not strong at the things you are.
PD: my mother is doing better now.
This speech should be shown to every young man in the world
Half of it will be labeled "toxic masculinity". It is time now for men to realize that they need to take care of themselves as the society treats them as disposable.
The greatest want of the world is the want of men, men who in their inmost souls are true and honest, men who cannot be bought or sold, men who do not fear to call sin by it's right name, men whose conscience is as true to duty as a needle is to the pole, men who would stand for the right though the heavens would fall

Today having listened to this amazing and powerful speech I realize that for a long while I've been a Man for a while I've been living by the Code of True Manliness. My Mother is an amazing woman who thought me all my values and I should've realized that at that moment. Thank you for this.
i resonate with this!!! 👍👍
Steadfast!!!
I am with you man. I was called weak and whiny by my family of origin, yet they benefited immensely from my nurturing and forgiving nature. My ex also preferred a manly man because I wouldn't hit her back or engage in verbal and emotional manipulation which she perpetrates on me and our children. Good friends, therapy, and my Christian faith rescued me and opened my eyes to whom I really am. Seeking true knowledge of self, as difficult as it is, is a long, painful but worthwhile experience. You've got to be brave to embark on it.

Masculinity is overrated.
True manliness is one that nurtures, false manliness is one that destroys.
of course, any imbecile can destroy. It takes a lot more to be able to take care of others with true love. What this man is talking about is actually what it means to be a good, strong human being. It is very hard, granted. We are spirits in a body. The weak spirit is the one that is the cold and rude etc. It's also the one that falls easily into temptations and is deceived. It is called the 'Fool' in the Bible. Hardest thing is to stay calm and caring to everyone when life's storms hits you repeatedly, in situations where everyone else would freak out. True manliness is to stay calm and calm and care others when those storms hits you. Only then you'll be able to grow.
I had the honor of having a role model that taught me this. He was a bodybuilder and could easily by look be considered one of false manliness. But I never have met anyone so quick to stand for those looked down on and protect the weak. And when I sent him this video and said it reminded me of him it made him cry. Thank you Rudy, for showing me when I was young what a man should be❤️
The dear person that's reading this, we don't know each other but I wish you all the best in life❤ don't ever blame yourself, accept things and go forward. Your smile is precious and a key to a happy life...

A Man
by Edgar Albert Guest
A man doesn't whine at his losses.
A man doesn't whimper and fret,
Or rail at the weight of his crosses
And ask life to rear him a pet.
A man doesn't grudgingly labor
Or look upon toil as a blight;
A man doesn't sneer at his neighbor
Or sneak from a cause that is right.
A man doesn't sulk when another
Succeeds where his efforts have failed;
Doesn't keep all his praise for the brother
Whose glory is publicly hailed;
And pass by the weak and the humble
As though they were not of his clay;
A man doesn't ceaselessly grumble
When things are not going his way.
A man looks on woman as tender
And gentle, and stands at her side
At all times to guard and defend her,
And never to scorn or deride.
A man looks on life as a mission.
To serve, just so far as he can;
A man holds his noblest ambition
On earth is to live as a man.
nothing wrong with anything you just wrote..

This one is better
But my friend who cares about "better"? Does this mean, by your perspective, that we toss the video in the trash? They both have valuable insights that hopefully each individual viewer is prudent enough and experienced enough to grab what is true. But discernment is sold separately.
I was fortunate enough to be taught this philosophy by my late father.
I have a special needs daughter who is to strong for my wife alone. And because of this, I'm a stay at home dad while my wife works. Many "successful "rich men and women have told me I'm not a man because I stay home to watch my children while my wife works.
These "successful men/women" that have told me this. No longer have a relationship with their children or family. Is that what a successful life is to people? To be alone and angry and prideful?
Success is doing the best you can for others. That may be working hard and providing for your family, it may be working hard at home to make sure your children are taken care of and the chores are done.
Only the weak try to destroy others thoughts of usefulness and hope. Success is much more then money and status.
Anyone who would feel the need to tell you that likely needs to learn to mind their manners.
👑In a world full of anxieties, this verse is for you tonight, “I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; For You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.” Psalms 4:8

A man follows the Truth no matter what the outcome. If he shall lose his possessions, his livlihood, status, family and even his own life; he stays the narrow path. People will ridicule him, spit on him, tear at his flesh and he will stand firm because his foundation is unshakeable.

Thank you Redfrost Motivation for reviving in me the love of poetry. I am getting to know of so many poets and their works that I did not know existed. As far as this poem is concerned I cannot believe that The poet passed away in 1880. His words are so relevant today.
True manliness is when you are ready to evaporate as a life today, for the sake of other lives. It is when you can consume all within the scope of "now", and with that consumption, are able to produce an insight of the best possible tomorrow. It is the discipline, to execute all actions required to fulfill the prerequisites of shaping the future according to the insight gathered.
In a simple sentence, it is to be on the front for mankind, with the awareness of our now and a drive to creating the best possible tomorrow. Any man doing this, is at the peak of masculinity.
I have those struggles now, im not really a kind person nor do I feel a lot of empathy. But I've been trying to learn to be humble and less angry. I pray on it sometimes when I remember to pray. I have my demons and my temptations that I battle daily but I dont give up. I need to conquer those before I can learn humility and kindness. I do protect the weak wherever possible and stand for what is right. And Im learning and practicing holding my tongue. I did not have a great father or older brother so Im having to learn these things at 33. Its tough but I have a good woman who teaches me these things. But at times I feel we are polar opposites on issues. Which brings up my bitter side and my decisions on matters leans to the violent side whereas she leans on the non confrontational side. But she is very empathetic and sympathetic and kind. So she calms me down many times. I have a long way to go but with every year that passes Im getting better.
I love these words for the men out there. This bit of writing has had a calming effect on me today. I've had the pleasure of knowing a few men who may have read this message! Men are lovely too.

He almost had it right , manliness can be hard as steel and cold as ice, it can stand in the face of death, and not back down.
Because his wife and children are to be protected even at the cost of his life.
When you remove ,Love , Honor

Once removed from the family a man has no natural place in Society.
