    Dont get confused by power fill ratings.I have this coat pf 550 and have coats by RAB, Fjern,Helly Hanson and West beach rated 700-800 and this is by far the warmest coat as it has more feathers,weightwise.The waterproof shell adds to the warmth too.

    • @seerking
      @seerking Před rokem +2

      these ratings dont mean their is more or less goose fill, it is a measurement of warmth, some coats can have more feathers but be colder some can have less feathers but be warmer, also visa versa, it all depends on the type of feather and quality of feather and whether or not its evenly fluffed out. You dont want it too crammed, you dont want it clumped up, you dont want it smashed in any way, every once in awhile you definitely want to get it cleaned professionally and they will fluff it out for you. Also you can get it refilled too. If you dont take care of your goose fill coats they will loose their power rating and not be as effective. In the end of the day most people will never see temperatures that a quality 550 goose down coat like this North Face Gotham 3 Winter Coat. 99% of people will never experience temperatures that will outperform what the coat is capable of, A lot of these is just marketing, you dont need anything warmer. Its already can handle anything the USA Temps can Throw at it, and most people wear fleece, wool, or cotton layers in the winter so putting the coat on just gives you significant more warmth. The only reason you would need something warmer is if youre living in the north pole for work or such, i cant imagine anyone living their for recreational fun as their main home.

    This jacket is ridiculous. I was thorn because everyone kept saying its not warm, compared to nuptse. This thing is so warm that i ended up changing my mind about buying a canada goose. Big difference it makes is the wind resistance, tested it on -6 temp and kept me warm and tested in the rain, also kept me dry and warm.

      If you live in a very cold climate, get yourself a TNF "Himalayan parka", That one is much warmer than the Gotham. And if you don't need to stay with TNF, you could also try the MHW "Absolute zero" (excellent, unbeatable price/performance ratio, warm, completely waterproof, nice high collar and good hood) or, if money is no problem, a Fjallraven "Expedition down parka no. 1" (used that one in Norway @ -20°C while waiting for the Northern Lights to appear, standing still for yours was NO problem, but be aware, this parka is NOT water proof and does not have draw strings at the bottom) and if you really want the warmest I know: take an Arcteryx "Cold WX parka SVX" but that one comes with a hefty price tag. I have all of these parkas, tried them all (including the Canada Goose "Expedition") and I must say: you get what you pay for. The Arc is the best. Every detail is just perfect, from the huge, high collar which closes the gap from your neck completely, to the hood, which is constructed in such a way you can STILL see everything around you. Many hoods are SO extremely deep, they are simply unusable, because the only direction you can see, is straight in front of you, which makes even crossing a street a highly dangerous adventure!

    I am in Toronto and just tried on the bomber jacket (I think it is now called the Murcudo bomber instead of the Gotham 3). I really wish the jacket was 1" taller, so that the elastic waist will always sit under my waist when I raise my hands. I also don't like the snap buttons for the fur hood lining because they easily fall off. The arms with with the elastic wrist cufflings fully extended just barely is long enough for me but it looks awkward when I wear gloves. I like to wear the hood nice and loose. I don't need the hood to wrap tightly around my face.
    I hate the logo on the front and back. I wish it were smaller and only on the front. I am buying the black version just to try hide the logo.
    It is a very puffy and warm jacket. I am replacing a McKinley down bomber jacket that is filled with 20% duck and 80% down which I find better but I can't buy anymore. This bomber is the closest replacement I can find. The Mckinley jacket is 1.5 inches taller than the north face bomber and I have no problems raising my arms to expose my waistline.
    Thank you for the review. I will give this jacket a try. I couldn't find any better bomber alternatives. I tried the Canada Goose bomber and the Moose Knuckles bomber (way too thick and expensive).

    The heaviest and warmest coat they offer? I think that's the Himalayan Parka! I own both the Gotham and the Himalayan and a lot of Nuptses, a wide variety of classic TNF down jackets and parka's, various McMurdo parkas and all I can say: the Himalayan beats 'em all when it comes to sheer warmth. In fact I should show my collection to the world, but it would take WEEKS to record all those clips and... I don't have a proper camera to do that AND a very sluggish internet connection (2MB or something like that) so I won't even START to do it...

      Hey Timmo! Thanks for taking the time to share and write a comment (: I was just saying on the North face site. The Gotham is rated a 3 in all those categories, 3 being the highest rating for each. So I’m sure the McMurdo and Himalayan would be rated 3’s also. Even though they may be heavier or warmer. That’s great to have some more info as well on those other coats - I have heard the Himalayan is very warm. Happy New Year !

      Much appreciated Bill! It does not have a draw chord sadly. But the ribbed collar at the bottom is a bit elastic like, that it is tighter than the rest of the coat causing a little constriction to keep it from being open. • @TheHumanBallsack
      @TheHumanBallsack Před 2 lety

      I own both - the Gotham III is a much more rugged and durable jacket which keeps you warmer than the Nuptse, mainly because of its construction and the ribbed hemline and cuffs. It's also waterproof and windproof, the Nuptse is only water resistant and its hood is absolutely useless when it rains even lightly.
      Despite the Nuptse being 700 fill, when the temp plummets down to single digits or below here in the UK, it's the Gotham III I reach for as nothing else is as warm for this price. It's only singularly stupid failure is that its main front pockets are not insulated, so in very cold weather don't expect to be able to keep your hands warm in there...

    I bought this discounted a couple of weeks ago based on the reviews and frankly I don’t understand why they rated it so high. To me at best it’s average-good. On the plus side it’s well stitched and the fit is good, the inside baffles and zip are good. On the cons the buttons are tiny: I have small fingers and was struggling on cold days to close them, someone with big fingers would have issues. The pockets aren’t fleece lined though they are warmish. The exterior fabric feels kind of rough and bulky, it might be just a propert of hyvent. I live in Toronto and on cold days below minus 10 this jacket is simply not warm enough with under layers. If you can get it for cheap go for it, but if you want the best value for $ then try a frank and oak alpine or capital series winter coat: the moment you put it on you’ll realize how north face, Canada goose, etc just can’t compare literally to quality design, features like magnetic buttons or warmth for money.

    • @TheHumanBallsack
      @TheHumanBallsack Před 2 lety

      I paid £300 for my one and although the doesn't usually go below zero degrees here in the UK, when it does, this holds up well despite its generous size. It might only have 550 filling compared to my Polo Sport fitted puffer jacket (650 fill) or even my North Face Nuptse puffer (700 fill), but it's noticeably warmer than both of those. My biggest gripe is the complete lack of thought they put into the main front two pockets - they are fleece lined but not insulated at all, which makes them useless as hand warmers so in extreme cold you definitely have to wear gloves. On a jacket this price, a lack of insulation in the main pockets is inexcusable.

      Move around more maybe :( I’m in Wisconsin, it’s -10 now and feels like -20, and I’m warm as can be at all times….now generally it’s not this stupid cold…but around zero I’m very comfortable in this jacket….another thing that might help is packing on some winter weight!! Maybe your too skinny lol :) I certainly don’t have that issue and I’m sure that effects how warm I feel using the Gotham iii

    Maybe you just make the jacket look good, but I purchased the Gotham 3 in black from online which arrived yesterday and man what an ugly ass ill fitting jacket. I'm 5'10 and 180lbs and this jacket looked HUGE on my in Large. The "fur" around the hood looked like it belonged on a $50 dollar jacket not a $450 jacket... The chest area is tight while the stomach area is huge...making my look fatter than I already am. The pockets for the hands just felt weird and unconfortable. The colour already looked like it was fading and just looked like it was worn by someone else.
    Needless to say, I returned that shit and will probably buy a Canada Goose or something else that has some quality behind it.

    It's a very good winter jacket overall, particularly as it's considerably cheaper than overhyped competitors like Canada Goose. My only criticism of this vid is that it doesn't accurately critique the hand "warmer" pockets. There is no excuse for a £300 winter jacket not having at least some insulation surrounding the hand pockets - I have tried to warm my hands inside these crappy pockets on zero degree days and there's barely an difference compared to leaving your hands out in the elements. In reality this means you need to wear warm gloves on the colder days as these pockets do not keep your hands warm at all (however, I concede that as an Asian guy I know our species runs colder than most White people who seem to be comfortable in shorts and T shirts in Arctic climates).
    Aside from that, the hood is totally ineffective because: 1. It's far too large for any normal human head, it might be better suited to individuals suffering from Elephantiasis, 2. It doesn't seem to be insulated and 3. The detachable faux fur closures leave considerable pockets of space between the buttons, when the wind picks up you will feel the biting cold coming through these gaps right against your vulnerable little head.

      Can’t knock you with this comment. For 300 it def should have no excuses in the warmth department ha.
