📌 This stich has the most wonderful texture as it has a raised, bobble-like effect. The blanket is SO soft and SUPER squishy!
Another great feature of this blanket is that it’s really quick and easy to work up - you only have to repeat 1 row throughout the pattern!
====================
📌 I finished my blanket off with a simple border consisting of 4 rounds of single crochet stitches. I then attached a pom pom to each corner.
====================
📌 ADJUST THE FINISHED SIZE / USE A DIFFERENT YARN WEIGHT:
The finished size of this blanket is 28 by 28 inches, but you can make it in any size you wish. If you would like to change the size or use a different weight of yarn, you will need to adjust the length of your foundation chain. Make a foundation chain that equals the width you would like your blanket to be. The starting chain should be a multiple of 3 + 1 (plus 1 extra for the foundation chain). You can see how I worked out the multiple in the ‘Pattern Notes’ section of the free written pattern: maisieandruth.com/easy-croche... You will then work your blanket until you have reached the desired length. When using a different weight of yarn and hook size, make sure that you order enough yarn to complete your project!
====================
📌 For ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS:
I would suggest that you practise this pattern with a small sample first: make a chain of 20 then follow the pattern from there.
====================
📌 DESCRIPTION:
For the yarn I used Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky, which is a #5 bulky yarn, in the colour Duck Egg Blue. For the crochet hook, I used a K hook (6.5mm).
💙 MATERIALS USED (AFFILIATE LINKS):
🔹Crochet Hook: K (6.5mm) amzn.to/3tT2bby
🔹5 skeins / balls of Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky www.lovecrafts.com/en-us/p/pa...
🔹Yarn needle amzn.to/3p9FfCp
🔹(OPTIONAL) 2.5" (6cm) Pom pom maker amzn.to/2Qk6D4F
This blanket really does work up super fast and is great if you need a last-minute gift for an upcoming baby shower!
This is a beginner-friendly crochet tutorial, and as long as you know how to work the following stitches, you’ll have no problem in crocheting this sweet baby blanket:
ch - chain
dc - double crochet
sc - single crochet
sk - skip
sl st - slip stitch
st - stitch

I agree. This is the best tutorial I've found for a baby blanket using this stitch. Thank you M & R!
This is the BEST blanket tutorial of the many I've seen using this stitch! Thank you!
I've made two baby blankets using this pattern so far and they turned out beautifully. I used Caron Simply Soft #4 wt yarn in white and still used a K hook. I started with a chain of 92 (90 + 2). It made a soft lofty blanket that was slightly larger than 28 inches, which is what I was hoping for. For Row 1, I worked the SC stitches into the back nubs of the beginning chain, which is what I generally do, but otherwise strictly followed your pattern directions.
There are many blanket videos using this stitch but none are as good or as clearly explained as this one, imo. Many of the others don't include the first row of SC, which is needed. If they mention it at all they don't tell you how many stitches to put in the beginning chain (a multiple of 3, then add 2 more stitches).
Also this border is perfect for this blanket imo. The blanket has a lot of texture and needs a clean, simple border. (I did not add any pompoms to mine.) This blanket is excellent for both boys and girls, and in white or maybe cream you can't go wrong even if you don't know the gender or nursery colors.
You're an excellent teacher; thanks and God bless!
One other note about joining a new skein for beginners, because a couple of comments have asked:
There may be other good ways to do it, but to join a new skein, I pull up the loops (will be 2 loops if a SC and 3 loops if a DC) of the stitch on my hook, then grab the yarn of the new skein with the hook to pull it through the loops to complete or continue the stitch as usual, leaving both tails at least about 6 inches long. Before weaving the tails in later, I tie a simple knot (not too tightly) and then weave each end in separately, changing directions a few times. I don't think you have to tie a knot, but I do, and it's not noticeable. ("Belt AND suspenders," LOL.)
I also recently learned that we are supposed to cut out any joining knot in the yarn done at the factory (if there are any in the skein), and then work as when attaching a new skein. A rep of Lion Brand yarn said the factory knot may not be strong enough to last, so don't just crochet over it! I didn't know that and would be upset if the blanket came apart later. Hope that helps someone.
Hi, how many yarns did you need for the blanket you stitched, please?
I wish I could add a photo, but I finished this today - my very first crochet project. Of all the things, I found the corners on the border the most challenging. It looks so nice and I’m very proud of myself. Thank you 🙏
You're so welcome! 😊 And congratulations on completing your first crochet project, well done!! 🎉

Me too Brittany! Congratulations! Feels great to have finally created and completed a beautiful blanket! Yay for us, right?🤗
Omg same!!! Xxx
How long did it take you to complete?
I'm quite an experienced crocheter and knitter now too, but when there's a pregnancy announcement, I always come back to this video to make this blanket because it works up so quickly and people love it! Thank you!
Someone I know is having their first baby. She always liked my crochet. Think I should crochet her a Baby Blanket. 🙂 They had issues for years having one. She had to go through a lot. So this will be a Miracle baby. This pattern is pretty.

Thank you so much for this blanket pattern ! Your directions are so easy to follow ! I started a blanket last week and the design is so beautiful. I have a lot of leftover yarn to use up and will be starting more. I am 77 and haven't crocheted in many years. You really encouraged me to get back to my crochet hook.
,
Finished my first baby blanket thanks to you! Can’t wait to see my baby cuddling in it!❤
Just coming up to my last round of edging. I absolutely loved making this blanket for when baby no.2 arrives. I used Aldi's big ball of Aran in teal 😍 and still have loads left. Thank you so much for sharing! I really struggle to read crochet patterns so seeing it visually is best for me ☺️ and then when I've finished I attempt to read the pattern knowing what I've just done x
You're so welcome - glad you enjoyed the tutorial! The teal colour sounds lovely, good choice 👍 And wonderful news about baby no.2... congratulations! 💗
Thank you for the tutorial that's very easy to follow. I needed a pattern that wasn't too complicated, just about to start the border. Absolutely love it and hope my friends new granddaughter will too 😊
You've made this look incredibly easy and it's BEAUTIFUL!! You're a wonderful teacher and your voice is so calm. Thank you! Can't wait to make this blanket!
I've made two so far and I'm so glad I found this tutorial. It's the best!
This is an amazing tutorial, you’re voice is very soothing, no loud music, no drama, very very well presented.
My new “to go “stitch.
Thank You for taking the time to make this amazing tutorial.
This was my first crochet project! I used a cream colored baby yarn and I’m in love. I learned not to stress about counting the rows and just gauge by how big I wanted to make it as I went. I had such a good time making this… lots of crocheting while watching the world cup
Is this blanket breathable?
Same for me. I just add rows until the blanket is as tall as I want relative to the width. I can't tell one row from another, LOL!
@@madisonbriggs8524 If you use a rather large hook (I use a K hook with #4 wt yarn) and don't crochet tightly (use a loose tension), this blanket is lofty and "squishy" (not dense) so it might be "breathable." Not sure exactly what that means, though. It makes a beautiful soft blanket.
But doesnt it have to be a multiple of 3😭
I am a long time knitter. I used to crochet a long time ago so I am a bit intimidated. Your video with the slow progress and showing exactly where to put your stitches was exactly what I needed. Thank you so much. New sub
I'm attempting to get back into crocheting after a long time and will try this tomorrow! A wonderful tutorial; thank you! My first son will be born sometime in the next month and I've been meaning to make something for him 😊
Congratulations, how exciting!! 👶💙 That's great you've got back into crocheting 👏 I hope you enjoy making up the blanket, it's a relaxing project and the finished blanket is lovely and squishy 😊
Your instructions are very easy to follow. I finished my blanket today. It looks amazing . I can't wait to start another one.Thank you so much!
I managed to make my first ever baby blanket (2nd ever crochet project) after following these instructions. I had to replay a few parts in the video before I fully understood and even then I made some mistakes along the way... but the finished project still came out absolutely beautiful and I am so grateful!
Encouraging to hear! I'm having to relearn crochet after only doing knitting for about the last 45 yrs, & it's taking me time! However 1 of my girls is due with her 1st baby, & this is the project I'm going to tackle to get me back crocheting. Such a lovely "how to" video & easy to follow. Thanks for your post, encouraging me back in 😊.
One of my favorite stitches! 😃 Beautiful blanket! 😍 The pom poms on the corners add an adorable touch. Great tutorial, thank you! And also a huge thank you for the free written pattern! 🤗🌷🥰💜
Thank you so much! 🥰 You're so welcome ♥️ I agree, this stitch looks so good and the bonus is that it's so easy to work up! 👌 I'm happy that you enjoyed the tutorial 😊
Which stitches is this ?
What a beautiful blanket. Making it in a pastel purple, it’s looking very beautiful! 💜
The pattern is so straightforward too.
That sounds very pretty 💜 I'm really pleased to hear that you're enjoying the tutorial so far! 🥰
I have just started my first project from yourselves and am so delighted, you take ur time to show us during the video and also the large pattern in yellow boxes, thank you 🙏 so much, you have made it so easy, ❤xx
I just made this blanket and it was easier than the finished blanket would suggest! I made it a bit larger with a beginning chain of 92 (90 + 2); next time might try 89 (87 + 2). I couldn't find #5 wt. baby yarn so I used Caron Simply Soft #4 wt. and a K hook with loose tension. I wanted it lofty and squishy. I worked into the back nubs of the beginning chain for Row 1.
For this one, on the border I used a J hook for rounds 2 thru 4 of the border to get a little firmer edge. I did not add any pompoms to it. It took 3 skeins (315 yards each) and a little bit of a 4th skein. I'm very pleased with how it turned out.
Thank you for this tutorial! I'll make more of these.
Thank you so much I really really enjoyed watching you talk us through your pretty blanket. You give very good instructions at every stage. Please stay safe and well too
You're so very welcome... I'm really happy to hear that you found the instructions clear and you enjoyed the tutorial overall 😃 Good luck with your blanket, it looks gorgeous made up in any weight of yarn and size of hook 💞
Just learned crochet with you. I am a knitter for 60 years but never learned crochet. Very easy tutorial with you keeping the pace slow to give me time to catch up to you. Lovely blanket for my first crochet baby blanket. So far I have not made any mistake and although it’s not perfect I am happy of the result. Thank you you do beautiful work.
Just made this for my first grand baby that’s on the way! Thank you for sharing this and your video was so easy to follow! It turned out wonderful and I’m sure he will love it!
Aww that's great, Amy! And congratulations on the news of your first grand baby! 💝
Hi! I just completed this today as my very first project. Thank you for your excellent instructions and showing how to every step of the way. I worked it in a dark purple to use as a dog blanket and it turned out very well especially for a beginner. I may do it again in a fun pastel confetti to give as a baby blanket. It was very easy work and great practice for basic stitches.
Thanks again!
You're so welcome 😊 And congratulations on completing your first project! 👏 The confetti yarn sounds lovely and would make a lovely gift for a baby 💝

Am I the only one that thinks ch 80 is still a bit small for a newborn?
Easy enough to scale it up.
If you use the paintbox wool that is showing this pattern then its big if you use just double knitting wool you need more than a 80 chain
I thought so till I saw it was chunky yarn.
Yarn weight makes a huge different lol if you’re using a 4, that’s probably really small. If you’re using like a 6, that should be fine
Absolute beginner here, so probably a stupid question - how do I know the weight of the yarn? I can't see it on the yarn label
Looks really good and look forward to starting this. Could you perhaps give me an idea how much yarn is needed for 28"x28" blanket. I have watched your tutorial and found it so easy to understand so thenk you for that
I'm so glad that you enjoyed the tutorial! 😊 For this blanket I used 5 balls of Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky. You can find all the details and more photos in the free written pattern 💕 maisieandruth.com/easy-crochet-baby-blanket-the-barclay-baby-blanket/
I looked up the paintbox simply chunky that you said in video, and it is weight 5. We do not have paintbox here, so I used another yarn with 5 weight. The blanket is pretty, but too heavy for a baby blanket. It actually looks like you are using a 4 weight yarn your using in your tutorial. Can you please verify, thank you
Thank you for this.
I have just made this for a friend who's expecting; I wanted something a bit different that would still be quick to make up, and this fit the bill perfectly.
It was also my first time properly edging a piece, so thanks for the inclusion of that as well.
Thank you as I have not crotched before I found this so easy. Have made three the last two for new twins. Just love the soft feel of this blanket.
You're so welcome, Dianne! 😃 I'm really pleased that you found the tutorial easy to follow 👏
I love this blanket and I just started today to crochet with my finger and I feel like it's going to be hard cuz I have to sleep in a few hours but I am willing to make a blanket for my baby brother. And I'm 11 years old. I wanted to ask how long it took you to make this blanket? Your blanket looks amazing!
Thank you, I'm so glad you like it! 🥰 It took me a couple of evenings to make this blanket but I've been crocheting for many years! The main thing is to take your time when making it, get used to the stitch pattern and don't rush it... enjoy the process! 😊 💕
@@MaisieandRuth I’ll keep these tips in mind! Thank you so much for replying back! ☺️
Trying this as my first following an actual pattern crochet blanket.... 3 rows and I'm calling it a night 😊 it looks somewhat like it's supposed to but my tension is a bit inconsistent- how tight or loose should the yarn be when your holding it?
Hi Sara Marie, first of all thank you for watching the video! 😊
I have some tips for you that should hopefully help you with your tension:
1. Start off with a small sample. Make a foundation chain of 20 then follow the pattern from there. It will be easier for you to handle the yarn and hook whilst practising the stitch pattern at the same time.
2. Try to keep your hands and fingers relaxed. Your mood affects your tension, if you are tense you're stitches may end up pretty tight too!
3. Use a quality yarn and hook. Cheaper products can cause your work to snag and pull. I really like the crochet hooks by Clover, the yarn just glides over (even with cheaper, scratchier yarns). Your experience of crocheting will be completely different and much more enjoyable if you use reputable brands.
4. Practise practise practise! This really is key. The more you practise the more your hands will get used to holding the yarn and hook. You will start to feel more comfortable and get into a good rhythm. There is no right or wrong way to hold the yarn and hook, just use the technique that feels most comfortable for you.
I hope this helps, keep at it as it will get easier with time and practise. 💞

I have just finished this Blanket and love it very simple to do av crochet for years and this is the first time following a pattern. Xx
That's great, I'm so pleased to hear that, Helen! 😀👏👏
What a great pattern!! I absolutely love how my blanket turned out!! Easy to follow and understand. Thank you for this video. 😊
I'm so pleased to hear that, Salina! 👏 You're most welcome 💝
Dear Maisie and Ruth: Please clarify the chain count. Isn't it multiple of 3+2 instead of multiple of 3+1? (78 is multiple of 3 + 2 = 80). Want to clarify this count before I start the chain since I am making a bigger baby blanket. Loved your tutorial and pattern. Thank you in advance for your response.
The multiple is 3 + 1. You then add 1 extra for the foundation chain. For this particular pattern I chained 80 in total (I chained 78, which is divisible by 3, then 1 extra chain was made. A further 1 chain was added for the foundation chain). Thank you, hope you enjoy working it up! 💕
Could I start with 100 in the initial chain?
@@MaisieandRuth you’re saying 3+1+1, so basically 3+2 😂
@@avf326 You can chain as many as you want to chain. The left over chains can be picked out and weave in the end!
@@avf326 you would need 101
99 is the multiple of 3 (33x3)
+1 +1(or +2) =101
HOw can I get the printable pattern?
I’m wondering the same thing.
Thanks for your interest but I haven't got around to creating a PDF for this blanket yet. Only the free pattern on my blog is available at present.
I made this from watching your video. It came out beautiful and was my first project. Thank you for teaching me. Your video was very clear and helpful.
I'm so happy to hear that! 😃 And well done on completing your first crochet project - it's a great feeling when you've finally finished and are happy with the result 👏💞
Thank you so much! I just completed this blanket for my sisters new baby girl. I did pink with a white border, it worked out beautifully. Very great video!
Thank you so much for your clear and simple instruction. Such a lovely pattern.
Thank you for such a comprehensive tutorial! Cannot wait to make this.
You're so very welcome! Enjoy! 💞
Thanks for your reply. I've finished the blanket and I'm so pleased with it - I'm now making a double bedspread to use up left over wool, which I'm half way through and now have to buy more wool to finish!!
Fantastic, Jean! I'm sure it will look really beautiful when finished 🌷
This is such a lovely pattern. I did bouble yarn and it's so think and soft ❤
I love this pattern! Super easy and turns out so cute. Unfortunately I ran out of yarn before I finished (by just about 4 inches). This is my first project so I probably didn't have good tension. Thank you for the free pattern and youtube tutorial!!
Thank you, I'm so pleased that you enjoyed making the blanket! Oh I'm sorry that happened. As you're a beginner one option would be to start out with a small sample square to practise the stitch and get to grips with your tension before embarking on the full project 💖
This pattern is so beautiful. Great for thin wool, the effect is marvellous. Thank you for sharing
Thank you, Sue! I'm so pleased that you're enjoying this tutorial! 🤗❤️
Really great instructions ...verbally and visually clear. Using bigger yarn and crochet hook really makes the visual stand out. Great for a novice like me. Thank you
You're very welcome, Barbara! I'm really pleased that you're enjoying this tutorial as a beginner! 🤗
Beautiful and easy pattern. I appreciate the way you speak slowly and clearly so it makes each step so easy to understand. 😊

Easy pattern to follow. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for the tutorial. You are a great teacher. I've started the blanket and because of your instructions, it is turning out great and is a fun stitch.
You're very welcome, Carol! 💝 I'm so pleased that you enjoyed this tutorial and found it easy to follow! 🥰
Just finished this for my niece. Lovely. Thank you.
How long did it take to complete?
