Southgate is nowhere near being the best England manager. What he has been is the luckiest England manager ever.
He has had dream draws for the competitions he's managed England in. He's also had a bunch of young, talented players at his disposal, and he's managing England at a time where most of the 'big guns' are a shadow of what they have previously been.
He has lost almost every crunch game against 'top quality' opposition. If England do go on to win the competition, it will be despite Southgate being the manager, not because of him.
@andrewsadikin5226 he's not the best manager, he gets nowhere near Bobby Robson or Vennables. You can't say he's the best because of where they get to in tournaments. He's been blessed with an exceptional squad and he still makes them underperform. The two managers I've mentioned would've won the last Euros with this team.
He has taught the UK that when you stay calm and push forward incrementally, results soon come your way. Well done Gareth!

A few years from now, Gareth Southgate will publish his autobiography and he will remind everyone that he is the England manager with the best record of recent times since 1966. It is rightly so if England wins this Euro 2024. If not, will he be reminded that the England should have won more in an era when Brazil, Germany, Italy and Netherland had struggled for almost a decade? Is it faire to say that his England team should have won the Euro at home in 2020 against an Italian team that could not qualify for the world cup? It has been evident that Southgate is who he was as a player, defensive and reactive. It may not be his fault but it is his limitation that he does not know how to play total attacking football or how to force his opponents to react to his tactics not the other way around. Perhaps at the end of the tournament, nobody would care how much credit he will take if England wins it. It is fully possible that the talents England have can carry him over the finish line despite he's been the constraint and shortcoming. But if England doesn't win it, Mr. Southgate please do not publish an autobiography!

Now, no one in the world outside the British Isles envies England's game, no little boy is looking forward to buy the Three Lions shirt, no England player is worth more today than yesterday, no major federation is considering hiring an English manager to copy Southgate's style. Except for the countries fighting for the title, the rest of the world wishes or recognizes that this euro should be for Spain.

I don’t think that England fans will care about their mediocre performances if they end up winning the EUROs playing the way they’ve played all tournament. When you have some of the most talented players on the same team, of course you’re expecting them to play a proper brand of football and you want to see the best version of a team, if they had been eliminated, the narrative around them will be about Southgate being a fraud of a manager and how he can ruin a team with very good players including a Ballon Dor contender. They’re in the semifinals despite struggling to win games in 90 minutes and majority of their performances haven’t looked convincing and also they have been outplayed during certain periods of the game. If they’re able to win the EUROs, it wouldn’t matter for them because you want to play well which is true, at the end of the day, football is about winning trophies and you can win a trophy while playing some of the most boring football ever yet you’re able to manage games and grind out results.
USMNT should replace Gregg Burkhalter with Gareth Southgate.

Even if Southgate was sacked after winning the Euros, it would still be a fine capstone on the C.V. Getting England a first European title and second international title in a long while. He would have the pick of whatever offers came his way. And there would plenty of offers.
It’s really funny to me how many excuses a player of Phil Foden’s caliber gets whenever he drops a stinker for his country. I agree that going from Pep Guardiola to Gareth Southgate is a massive drop off as there’s a massive gap in quality between the 2 managers and being surrounded around the right system and players who play to your strengths he’s a prime example of it. He is still struggling to produce his best form for the England national team and once again at the EUROs despite some odd flashes of glimpses, he’s still short of his best form. In the first couple of games of the tournament, he was uncomfortable playing as a left winger and that’s clearly not his position as everyone knows that he’s more of a central player as he wants to get on the ball and make things happen in areas of the pitch where he thrives the most. Today against Switzerland, Gareth Southgate changed the formation and he played Foden as a double number 10 where he played decently which is a fair assessment of him, fell short of expectations for England yet again and he’s yet to truly gel in the same team alongside Jude Bellingham.
When you’re supposed to be the best player in the premier league and you’re in your prime, yes it’s true that he has underperformed for his country and no matter what position they play him in they don’t get the best out of him and we should acknowledge that and also we have to stop making excuses as well because Foden has been underwhelming with England for years and other players are making an impact for their country and some of them aren’t even playing in their position and going into the semifinals, if he’s gonna be a passenger in the team and show up in glimpses, then don’t play him, if you want to play him make sure that he’s involved in the game.
When they bring on the actual best player they turn it around

Bruno is amazing but he is replaceable. he’s not in his early 20s as well and getting in his 30s.
