everything I ate at a traditional Japanese inn (ryokan) in arashiyama, kyoto

  • A ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn that often includes tatami-matted rooms, futon bedding, yukata robes, and a multi-course dinner & classic Japanese breakfast. This was my first time experiencing a ryokan, and I definitely plan to stay at more ryokans whenever I come back to visit Japan!
My favorite part of the ryokan had to be the multi-course dinner (kaiseki). It was exciting to see what types of food they brought to our rooms, especially since the menu was entirely in Japanese (so it was actually a total surprise)!
We chose this specific ryokan because it was in a prime location in Arashiyama. We were so close to the shopping street and only had to walk 10-15 minutes to each attraction. However, since it's in a popular location it was definitely pricier compared to other ryokans. You can expect ryokans to be more expensive than typical hotels, but it's worth to experience it for one night.
The staff at this ryokan were all so accommodating and welcoming. They only spoke Japanese, but luckily Bobby knows enough to hold a conversation. The lady who brought us our food instantly opened up once Bobby started speaking Japanese. She told us different stories about how some visitors didn't know how to eat sukiyaki and put the raw egg into the soup instead of using it as a dip, and how difficult it was for her to explain that it's not supposed to be eaten that way haha.
The futons were actually very comfortable! In the video I mentioned how I was afraid of my back hurting because I don't sleep on the floor often, but it didn't hurt at all! Overall, I had a great first time experience at this ryokan. Highly recommend!
