I was visiting a friend in South Africa (I'm from the US) to celebrate the year 2000. Madelein came to visit my friend, and I cooked a Mexican dinner with ingredients I brought from North America. Madelein enthusiastically enjoyed the meal and hugged me and gave me a sloppy kiss on the cheek as she departed (she also reported burning diarrhea the next day, but that's beside the point) . I loved conversing with her, and she and I had so many odd, random stories to share, that left us in uproarious laughter. I was so delighted when she invited us to her flat where we entered the building, just as the interviewer in this video, we went up the exact same elevator and I received the the same welcoming hugs and kisses! Madelein welcomed us into her flat, in her signature bare-footed style, and this time, she was introducing me to South African cuisine as she was generously keeping my glass of wine full. I am so honored to have shared these memories with her.

South African here, living abroad. I remember reading Madeleine's articles in Huisgenoot. I never realised what a CHARACTER she was. Her story about Kip brought me to tears. So glad that I clicked on this.
