- This step by step guide is how to replace a non responding infotainment screen on the Nissan Leaf Mark 1 from 2011 till 2017 model year 24kWh
The 30kWh Leaf has a differant digitizer screen.
The right hand side of the screen no longer responding, is a common known failure.
Applies to the Japanese built Leaf (2011 to 2013) and the Sunderland build UK leaf in Acenta and Tekna trim levels. (2013 to 2017 24kWh only)

If i can manage this fix , anyone can !
Thanks for watching, and i hope it's useful
The screen size/ type is a QY-7221 - Auta a dopravní prostředky
I just used this to repair my screen. Thank you for the tutorial. The only thing I did differently is I used a heat gun to heat the screws. It helped melt the loctite and ease the ones that were seized.
Thats a top tip 👌 thank you 😊
Just did the same repair over the Christmas period. £10 repair. One snag I had that is worth mentioning. While putting the unit back into the car, the last part of attaching the ribbon to the bottom caused the unit to fold back in on itself before I had time to fully attach the ribbon cable. The button to fold it out again was now non functional. So i'd advise attaching the ribbon before the hinge screws to be safe. If it doe fold in you can pull the bottom of the screen out a bit just by pulling it until you can see the 2 hinged screws again. Nice one.
Incredibly useful information Jonathan. Not only is the replacement screen dirt cheap but you save paying an arm and a leg for a dealer to fit it all in. £16.07 pence to return the screen to full function (£9.12 if you already have the required screwdrivers). Bargain of the year.
Thanks for watching 😊
I have performed this replacement successfully (eventually). Once you have the screen removed from the radio I would suggest disconnecting the 12V car battery, because during re-assembly my screen retracted (unintensionally) while I was trying to reconnect the wide ribbon cable. Once retacted it would not open again due to the ribbon cable not being connected, also nothing on the radio/screen worked. To fix this I had to remove the whole radio from the car and take the radio apart so that I could apply 12V to the motor that contols the screen so that I could get it to open again. Dissconnecting the battery could save several hours of work and many swear words.
Could also pull the infotainment fuse
I have a similar issue and now have no idea how to get it back out!
Any tips on how to take the radio out and where to apply the 12v?
@@cutebutnotthatfly After you have finished swearing you need to remove the facia from around the radio. This is the whole centre section of the dashboard, including heater controls etc. There are all sorts of clips that hold it in place, so take your time so that you don't break anything. I recall a small wiring harness needs to be unclipped too. Once the 'console cover' has been removed there are 4 screws holding the radio, unfasten these. You then need to disconnect the radio wires and aeriel leads from the rear of the radio (take a picture if possible to ensure they go back correctly). Once the radio is removed you need to take off the rear panel to gain access to the motor that controls the screen. (I removed more panels but the important one is the rear one). Once the pannel is removed you should be able to see the motor, it is at the front of the radio on the right hand side when looking from the rear (it is a small cylinder with wires coming from the back of it). There are 2 wires that go into the motor, you need to construct 2 long leads that allow you to connect 12v to these connectors. It does not have to be a good connection, just enough to get the motor to turn. If it does not work initially try swapping the polarity so the motor turns in the correct direction. If this all works then reconnect the screen/ribon cable before putting the radio back in the car - its a lot easier to do it at this stage. When re-installing the radio try to use a magnetic screwdriver as I lost one of the screws into the depths of the car. Re-assembly is the opposite process to removal, none of it is straightforward so expect lots of frustration and swearing. Good Luck.
Good video but strongly recommend first disconnecting the battery to prevent the unit closing up without warning and crushing the delecate ribbons and or fingers. Also the cross head scredriver must be of the correct size and ideally new. ie could hold a screw on the tip so easy to offer screw up prior to screwing in. I've seen 3 videos and every time they had to drill out one of the first screws that hold the plate over the huge ribbon in place. I managed to unscrew them both. One had been fixed with security(tamper proof) glue? Finally after a first attempt ending with a blank screen and a sleepless night, I replaced that plate with the two screws before attaching the unit to the metal tray with the two side screws. Thus allowed careful fitting of the ribbon so essential to operation. Now all works well. Even the voice activated phone feature saves me having to pull up off the road to use the phone. Best video though.
Another useful tip tucked away for future reference. The head units on the Leaf are a bit of an achilles heel as they do so much more than just entertainment. A friend bought a 30kWh Leaf from a dealer and fortunately went for the insurance backed guarantee. A month later the head unit died, went back to Nissan and was repaired then just before the 1 year warranty expired it died entirely. Nissan replaced the entire head unit for the Princely sum of £4176.53 (incl. VAT & Labour), fortunately paid by the guarantee.
Wow £4k , thanks for your comments 🙏 👍 😀
@@JonathanPorterfield this will also work fo ra 65 plate leaf? The screen has cracked as my wife couldn't get the digitiser on the rhs to work. you could have saved us about £4000! can I ask how much time this took??
@Gking1971 Hi , if its a 24kWh leaf then yes , as some 30kWh leaf had the new updated graphics when you start the leaf , if it looks exactly the same as my start up in the video then yes the digitizer screen will work fine.
Total time was around 3 hours , as it was the 1st time I'd changed one , but if i did it again , probably 1 hour !
Thank you for the tip about the QY-7221. Unfortunately, the original touchscreen is really poor quality.
Well done JP. As a retired electronics engineer, I would leave the protective film on the outside until fully installed, then remove it to test.
As per the other comment, best not to wear anything nylon / acrylic to reduce the amount of static which the body may have. There are cheap anti-static wrist straps which you connect to a dummy 13A plug earth pin to slowly bleed away any static charge.
Thanks for the tips 😀 😊
Was thinking this my self. Hope he touches pipework and limits static
Yep. Also done this fix. My kit was about £12 but did come with the tools. Just left with the odd glitch of the side buttons not working from time to time and it's a bugger since there is no other way of accessing the zero emission button.
Thanks for the video :)
Thanks for watching and your comments 🙂
GREAT info Jonathan I've been having trouble with the screen on my 2014 leaf for a long time. Started on the right and moved to the left now it hardly works at all . I just ordered one! Thanx
Glad my video has helped ! Use the correct screwdrivers , and take your time 👍
I just did this fix on a 2012 Nissan LEAF that had a smashed touchscreen. Mission successful! Thanks a million for the informative video!
Great to hear Mark 👍
Nice one, Jon! My 2014 model screen is still working, but going a bit "numb" to the touch. Time to pre-empt total failure and replace that screen!
Thanks for watching and glad it's of use 👍
Brilliant, I’ve swapped a few Leaf screens to solve this problem by sourcing the whole tilting screen unit from breakers, but have occasionally fallen foul of the ribbon connector being different between model years. So this is a much better and cheaper solution 👍
Just done it. If I can do it. Everyone can. Jonathan- thanks ever so!!!!!!!!!
That's great 👍
Mind you….i had to repeat process twice since had a dog hdd as it stuck behind the new screen. 😂
Whooooah, success it works and many thanks for such a clear video. Thanks for taking the time to upload such a useful video. 2015 Nissan Leaf. 👍😎👍
Grest to hear it's helped Ian 👍
Another option is to ask Cleevely EV about the screen repair. They can do it for my 2013 model Leaf and it was much cheaper than getting it done at the dealership. Have not booked them to do it yet though but definitely worth enquiring about if you don't fancy doing it yourself.
Yes , Cleevely EV i know really well , top people and 100% recommend 👌 👍
Screen has now been changed by Cleevely EV and it works really well. Had it done at the same time as a major service and cost £400 for both.
Excellent video, and just what I was looking for just now.
I completed this repair a few months ago on my Leaf 24 and it was successful. Its well worth doing if you have the same fault, I didn't find it too difficult and the screen was good as new for less than £20.
Many thanks for the info - saved me ~£600. Screen's now fully functional again!!!
This is excellent timing as my screen is starting to fail on right hand side.. thanks!
Glad it's helped ! 👍
Well how satisfying, I do love a simple fix and this one is filed for future reference. Cheers Jonathan and Happy New Year.👍🥳
Thanks Jude , i really enjoyed making this video too 😊
That is tremendous work. 👏
Great repair!!
A useful video. Perhaps you could suggest how i can replace my severely degraded Nissan leaf battery cheaply, without having to scrap the whole car, because of a lack of financial viability. I think that Ian Sampson would like a similar suggestion for his ENV200.
Probably cheaper, in the UK, to just buy another Leaf now. They are around £4k with decent battery health. I bet you could find a 12/12 battery Leaf for less than £5k if you haggle?
Great tip there JP. You are a true font of knowledge for the Nissan Leaf & ENV200.
Also as it happens, another CZcamsr Ian Sampson is trying to consider options for a 2017 24kWh ENV200 with what appears to be a dodgy module.
Any cheap advice you could recommend or specialists?
Yes I thought of Ian Sampson when I saw JP was working on the ENV 200. Be great if Jonathan has any tips or contacts to help him fix that HV battery.
As ian said , i can only think of cleverly who can open up the pack and replace the failed modules.
Ask James of cleverly mobile to get his thoughts 🤔
Mr P you tech wizard you .
Thanks so much!
👍
That is actually called the Digitizer that's not the screen that is what creates the touch part of it.
I know , but I wanted to keep it simple.
Hi Jonathan, a great and useful Video, thank you for producing this, I was just wondering please could you tell me which replacement screen is required for the 30 kwH Model? Thanks Peter
Hi peter , ive not yet found one for the 30kWh leaf or the 40kWh eNV200 , they are a differant connection etc
Hi@@JonathanPorterfield, thank you for letting me know, hopefully you'll be able to find one soon. Cheers Peter
I bought my 24kWh 2015 tekna yesterday, with this issue. I’ve ordered the part. However, by having a mess with what I did have access to on the unit, I’ve started navigation to what appears to be the previous owners home address. Now that I’m in the navigation I can’t cancel the route, so I’m stuck in this navigation! Anyone have any tips for how I can factory reset the preferences/memory of the head unit until I get my replacement digitzer?
Thanks for the video, sadly I must have done something wrong. The screen retracted but does not turn on and now won’t come back out.
Any advice on how to get it back out to check everything? 😢
If anyone else gets in this issue. You can very slowly and carefully pull the screen out. But could also risk destroying it all
I see on Twitter ( X) that you've now plugged in the ribbon fully , and its working now ! 👏
The digitiser linked is sadly no longer available and one I bought that was apparently for this unit didn’t work. I also had an issue that the small clip that retains the electrics snapped off when I tried to close it so getting it to stay in situ was not simple. I ended up putting the old digitiser back on and doing a lot of fiddling (and swearing) just to get it back together so the reverse camera etc at least was still operational. If anyone has a link to a digitiser that is definitely correct please let me know.
I would suggest to add the code of the screen in the description because the product could disappear in aliexpress. What is the code wronte in the connection ribbon of the screen? is it QY-7221?
Yes QY-7221 👍👍
This type of digitizer won’t fit 2019 Tekna model vans that have the Clarion 25915 6WX1D unit. It seems that the screens for these are impossible to source
So the 40kWh eNV200 must have a different head unit 🤔 thanks for the update.
just did mine now all i have is power to tilt etc and a black screen so did not work for me help needed ( have tried all buttons day/night etc no joy.. will try reset remove 12v battery supply for 5 mins
Make sure the ribbon is correctly in position on the back of the unit when its open.
@@JonathanPorterfield thx just looked seems ok but looking at it under mag glass ribbon looks maked ?
when fitted can only go in as far as the little tabs on side of ribbon
@@JonathanPorterfield truied everything today still no joy
@@JonathanPorterfield should i remove the ribbon and try again ?
@happyjack7948 i would , and failing that make sure the small ribbon is plugged into the circuit board correctly, which will mean taking the screen out again 🤔
Unfortunately the link takes you to a sold out product. I'm looking for a screen...
Im guessing it may comeback in stock , google the part number and see if you can find another seller.
@@JonathanPorterfield Thanks. I should have said, great video. Very useful. Hoping I have found the right part. Same part number.
@stephenborman5385 thats great news , re fitting , the last comment on here said he heated up the back plate to loosen the locktight which is a good idea as i had to drill mine out
Screen arrived so giving it a go today
@stephenborman5385 take your time , someone has suggested warming up the screws under the screen so it with soften the locklight on the tiny screws
hi just to let you all know i did this and it did not work for me, this was not the fault of jonathan`s video i just got unlucky and it did not work for me (nissan crap )
Try re plugging in the ribbon into the screen ?
Even the speech recognition is poor on those things..
Cars are good though, should've upgraded the battery, to give it longevity
3:46 note-worthy: preferably touching every chip possible with some handy, static-charged, body parts... 🤌
Ok , point taken 😊 but no harm done ✔️ 👍
