    This is everything I've been saying. I fully believe that Mojang needs to take a step back, do a smaller update and not say anything that they are not committed to. Just play a bit of catch up. Caves and cliffs was a huge update which we still doing have everything from. I think if instead of huge update after huge update, they instead had a large update then a small update to catch up on anything they need to while planning out the next big update, their work flow would be much more sustainable. You can't keep making huge update after huge update consistently
    Edit: my biggest problem though is how Mojang basically tried to gaslight the community about birch forests

      @@thegeostormgd9830 Agreed, we kinda get small updates after big updates, like the Ocean Update in 1.13, pretty sure few things were affected outside the ocean and it expanded Ocean content, like coral reefs, more fishes to eat etc.

    I’m a programmer and while I am not as familiarized with Minecraft dev I do think this *should* be feasible for a AAA studio with the most successful game in the world, Mojang puts an artificial development barrier on themselves by thinking what fits the game for months on end because of their sometimes illogical invisible rules such as “real life mobs can’t be hostile. I feel that if you gave Re-Logic a shot at a minecraft update (with the necessary knowledge) they would do a much better job not only concept-wise but also mechanically. Take for example the Deep Dark, it took 2 YEARS to make it and while its an awesome addition, did it really needed to take 2 years? the loot isn’t even worth the risk at all, great concept but gameplay wise it adds almost nothing to the gameplay loop.

    • @justforlawlsandtrolls
      @justforlawlsandtrolls Před 2 lety +10

      I think there is a lot of reasons to keep old biomes, especially with the Swamp, given that it's wetlands terrain, unique dirt colors, but relatively clear and open treeline give make a biome that feels somewhat higher difficulty to traverse than a normal biome, but also isn't nearly as crowded and difficult to traverse as the Mangrove Swamp, allowing new players to feel like they can still live within a swamp, and also allows players to actually obtain slime. The old swamp provides opportunities that the Mangrove swamp could not.
      On the other hand, I definitely agree that the biome needs an update still, they didn’t really address any of the swamps problems, (Like the really ugly oak trees) and instead just created a new biome

    It would be one thing if Mojang didn't include one or two things from the concept art in the final release, like if the fallen trees didn't have hollow logs or something. I think everyone gets that not everything in concept art will translate into a specific feature and that artistic liberties are sometimes taken. But the concept art of the Birch Forest was a stand in for a much larger concept and set the expectation that a large part of the Wild Update would be about atmospheric and immersive elements. We get that they were purposefully vague about what that would mean (especially given what had just recently happened with Caves & Cliffs), but the implication was there that this was going to be the second half of the update and that the Mangrove Swamp was just part of that.
    The bigger issue is how they announced that this wasn't coming to 1.19. They should have a) been more timely in the announcement that this wasn't coming in 1.19, b) been more explicit as to whether these features are canceled forever or pushed to a future update, and c) not put it on the community for having high expectations like it was our fault for being excited for immersive elements. The Mojang exec they had deliver the message missed the mark entirely, and leaving it "we've stopped working on these features" leaves more questions than answers.

    While we technically have more stuff, we still haven’t made it back to a performance close to that of 1.16.
    1.17 updated to OpenGL 3.2 (or something) and it absolutely ruined the game's performance. Even on a decent computer, it’s impossible to run shaders, or high render with decent FPS, something that wasn’t a problem before.

I first got Java Edition prior to 1.16, and I remember the anticipation of the Nether update, and I remember excitedly going into my Nether and exploring the new biomes and such. I agree with your analysis that 1.16 was a well-prepared product and was equally well-received. And for having been a first time Java player coming off of a very leisurely experience on Pocket Edition, I honestly felt like I had time to enjoy that very first world I made before putting it through a major update (1.16). Now, it just feels like everything is rushed and players don't have time to enjoy their worlds between updates. It may sound silly, but I even get concerned about how many new chunks I want to load in an existing world; if mammoth updates keep dropping that overhaul world generation and biome generation, casual players like myself (that don't devote the grinding hours that Minecraft content creators do to the game) find themselves in a conundrum of whether they want to keep investing in their existing world or start a new one to experience the whole of the game without having to travel thousands of blocks away. I know everyone plays differently, but this is my take on it. I'd be curious if other's share this sentiment or would have a different perspective.

    As much as I'd love to see them bring back Archeology, I know that this is a feature which is not really awaited by the majority of the community. That being said it would be better to get a small update which everyone likes.
    I have been thinking about this whole Mojang overpromise underdeliver issue for a while. This was never seen before and it was a unique problem only for this update. I know and I can understand that some updates are more challenging and difficult the others, this one being the hardest for them. I'm happy that you mentioned that they've uploaded videos like announcing the split of caves & cliffs (partly because now I don't have to explain it). We've been told it's hard for them and while it was disappointing news the community was supportive and understood their situation. The cave generation codes have been unchanged for years, ofc it was hard to rewrite it.
    That being said, I personally have the patience to wait for updates. But it's their recent transparency, dishonesty and lack of communication what saddens and enrages me. Like we know it's embarassing for them, and even more so if they acknowledge how messed up this got, but it'll get only worse the more they stay silent about it as the community will feel like it's getting ghosted by the devs.
    Once again, Mojang did not run into delivery problems like this before and we could say they just didn't know how to handle this. Hopefully they'll learn from this.

      Yessir, I read every single comment! I think that's a great point, the more that I think about it, the more I realize Mojang isn't being upfront with us, like you said. Even thinking about the timeline of events. They release Minecraft Live in October, one day later there's posts on reddit about Fireflies being poisonous to frogs, and then they announce that they're removing fireflies a full 7 months later? That doesn't really add up for me. It feels like they overpromised and needed to do something to get the update out the door in a reasonable amount of time.
      I know people joke about "they're just 2 pixels" but when you think about it, they need to add spawning mechanics, interactions with the frogs, flight patterns, performance implications since entities cause lag in Minecraft, making sure it works across all versions of the game, and probably more things I'm not even aware of. Still, Minecraft is a multibillion dollar IP, you'd think something like this wouldn't be a problem for Mojang and Microsoft.

    ▪︎Add a strike system.

    Until yesterday I would 100% agree with you, but now, seeing as Mojnag just added ban feature that is just objectivly bad, I don't think their goal is to make the community happy, Microsoft took 100% lead of them and they are trying at all cost to delete the Java edition. Think about it. Who is going to be more upset about Mojang not keeping up with promises, average Bedrock player or Java player? Of course Java player since the other one doesn't probably know what Minecon is. Who is going to be more angry about the ban feature thing? Of course Java player since on Bedrock there is much more control rn and this change wouldn't be as dramatic as it is on Java edition. The cherry on top is that Mojang gave everyone for free the Bedrock edition which is at least veeery sus, since no corporation would do that for no reason or just because they feel bad about what happened before, it's really a lot of money, more than 1/4 of their ever earned income. The surely want to kill the Java edition and force everyone to play only on Bedrock...

    I honestly think that Mojang discovered the potential of the Warden was far greater than they first realized. Moving things into another update. We are still getting the content just at a later date and more in-depth and interesting. If they were an indie developer this would be okay, but because they're a big company they're not allowed to change their mind. I think the fireflies being removed is a little annoying considering they've added things without functionality, later adding a purpose in a future update. I think they should reassess their announcement strategies and allow fans to lower their expectations, leaving room for more realistic updates.

  • @percival7532
    @percival7532 Před rokem +2

    i think mojang needs to put out less updates.
    the modding community isn't able to settle on a version right now that isn't abt 1.12 or 1.16 because they keep pushing out these updates, and honestly, it's a bad sign for the modding community to only stick to one or two updates or have to add in newer content in their mods because they can't update to a newer version since mojang keeps pushing out updates and changing up the code and whatnot.
    smaller updates would also be nice, but at this point i think it'd be better for them to do like. one big update every two years or something.

    Hah, funny, back when this video was made, people thought Mojang THEN was bad. I guess we didn't know just how bad things could get lol. They went from being lazy with updates to ruining villager trades, to deleting old accounts, to even more scummy business practices, to getting EVEN MORE lazy with updates. Putting a tight leash on how everyone plays Minecraft while lecturing about "player freedom" and "play the game your way" is somehow both ironically hilarious and deeply depressing.
    You know, when I was little (back in 2012, yes it's been THAT long I feel old lmao) I wanted to work for Mojang on a game that I loved. I've poured thousands upon thousands of hours into this game, so seeing this studio I used to love fall so far from grace really hurts. I guess it's the equivalent of "man, you used to be cool. What happened?" For videogames.

    I actually really liked this video. Very interesting. It's nice to hear it from the perspective of a person who's worked in a similar industry as Mojang. I see a lot of people attacking Mojang for this and it honestly makes me sad.🙁 I get that they should've not shown things that they may not add, but they don't deserve the hate. I definitely agree that doing neat and small updates would be a good idea and it will give them a break as well especially since they've been working hard through this Pandemic. I think doing something like a Minecraft Live Mini could be a stream where they announce smaller bite sized updates. I think that would be cool. Also, the Magma cube features I guess was so we can got frog lights which I believe the community wanted something like it and Mojang was trying to find a use for frogs at the time so they combined the two features into one. 🙂

    An ambience update would be nice. They could definitely add fireflies and new particles as you mentioned but perhaps like one other mob such as birds to make the daytime in Minecraft seem more ambient. If they did do this, maybe they could work on a big update in the background. Perhaps a 1.21 Ender Update? I just think that Mojang needs to perhaps do a cycle of small updates that allow them to work on big updates. But I do agree with you, they need to be more informative and transparent, especially about new, controversial changes such as the upcoming chat banning feature.

    I think a removed features update would be best, features like fireflies, wax blocks, crystallized honey, or the killer rabbit would be cool. Maybe some features that were considered but never added, like rubies, dyed planks, or brick pyramids would also be nice additions. Or work on adding stuff exclusive to java to bedrock and stuff exclusive to bedrock to java. Like sweeping edge, illusioners, or spectral arrows to bedrock or baby squids, big salmon, or potions of decay on java. An update like that could fix this problem
