This was, by some margin, Wayne Larkins' best test match as a batsman for England.
I saw him bat a lot during his county cricket career with Northants and Durham. He was a tremendous talent when on song. His was a career unfulfilled in my opinion.

DeFreitas, Fraser, Malcolm, Tufnell. Got to be one of England's weakest ever tails.

I've seen worse from England! Fraser was a half-decent blocker. DeFreitas had talent, but wasted it. The other two were utterly hopeless.

@@graememason7670 Yes, to be fair I do remember DeFreitas going on the attack a couple of times (possibly even on this tour in Australia(?)) and displaying pretty good timing and a potential to be fairly decent with the bat, but by more recent standards I don't see him being consistent enough to be selected to bat in the side at no. 8. Albeit I think from the Duncan Fletcher era onwards there's been far too much emphasis placed on whether bowlers can bat as well.

How about Giddins, Mullally and Tufnell 1999 at the Oval.

Atherton never got the measure of Reid in this series. Dreadful batting.
