  • The mid-day 90 minute tourist cruise of the "Lynx," of War of 1812 era, on Lake Erie from Cleveland harbor in moderately light air. In the western background are briefly seen small sailboats racing out of Edgewater Yacht Club, where my family belonged in the late 60's with our trailerable Highlander sailboat, racing these waters more hours than I can count. But like my father, my original sailing love was of the old ships more than the modern racers, so this Lynx trip was a sort of double homecoming for me underscored as 2 Edgewater Highlander boats followed along behind us as we ended our short tour.

Well now you can be more jealous. An Irish pipes buyer of mine is crewing this summer on another of the tall ships that were at Cleveland and needed some tech support. So I got a guest invite onto the ship and down to the crew quarters and other areas the public couldn't visit, to work on his instrument. So I lost some holiday time having to travel and work; but I got to do my 19th century job bobbing on the water on a 19th century ship, amid wood, rope & canvas. I've worked worse overtime.

Reply to John Meshkoff: I was regional junior sail race champ in 1968 out of the club just left of the opening scenes. Fared so-so racing in college racing but got into experimentation with boat and sail design, would've studied naval architecture but not enough I.Q. So bagpipe experimentation was a natural for me. Pipes and old ship love go back to my infancy, who knows why. I rigged up my Radio Flyer wagon as a windwagon in 5th grade, even had the handle in the rear like a tiller, and got 8 knots out of it on a windy sidewalk before I wrecked it on a telephone pole.

And all this time I thought you were just the old penny chanter maker! Tis' been a long time since the SF Pipers Club Convention! Had no idea you had the old sailing in your blood; apparently a great- or great-great maternal grandfather of mine owned Baltimore clippers, and gambled them away! There's an old-timer or two down in SF at the Maritime Museum; it's great to see old-time sailing ships that are actually sailing! Regards, John
