They hoped people would want to watch it for Shit and Giggles and for its infamy at 2nd release. They were not successful with that assumption.

Sony misinterpreting the ironic love for Morbius as real interest and rereleasing the movie only to have it bomb again is such a perfectly hilarious ending to the morbin' saga that it's almost hard to believe it really happened. Sometimes the internet can be very, very good.
There was an episode of southpark where they wrote a diagram that was like a "trolling pyramid" and explained that it can determine political outcomes and stuff. That was right on the money.

I will say this with confidence, Morbius is DEFINITELY a movie that was made.
It truly is the movie of all time.
You could even say it was THE movie that was made
It did have a plot and actors in it. The shots are also in focus. It runs 24 frames per second to simulate movement. If there ever was a movie, Morbius is it.

I think my favorite part of the morbius meme thing was when somebody tweeted to Sony asking them to have a third theatrical run because we were all just busy during the first two but we totally want to see it. That one legitimately made me spit out my drink and I think that's worthwhile

One of my favorite things about Morbius being rereleased was someone making a petition that said something like "Rerelease Morbius a third time, we were busy that weekend"
I think an important element to Morbius' success as an ironic meme worth mentioning is that it had a perfect storm of detractors. People that hate comic book movies hated it because it was a comic book movie, people that love comic book movies hated it because they could see through Sony's soulless, corporate-driven attempt to compete with the MCU. This combined with the movie being straight-up bad, Jared Leto being a weirdo and all other factors made Sony the perfect target of derision. It was a mocking campaign fueled by justified cynicism, and it was glorious.
I think it being a Sony project is the main thing.
People just call the modern MCU hot shit. Morbius was different though and I feel like because it didn’t have any built in fanbase like the MCU there was nobody to buffer the total thrashing
The entire response towards Morbius and the constant meme-ification of it really was a lightning in a bottle moment for the internet. I don't think any movie has ever had so many ingredients building up to such a massive movement against it via memes quite like this before

That, or he's just genuinely that fond of acting he always gives his all- which seems to be the case, even with subpar writing and directing, Matt Smith always seems to give it his all to make it the best performance you've ever seen.

Yea meme didn’t die. It just kept being used by people who really should stop using it as it’s not really funny and pretty annoying to see it.
Most of people who use them meme however do get so many likes to point i feel like why do people find something that was funny for a while then got too old and overused and ran to ground.
Then again lately a lot memes are like that. When they first came out it is fun time to joke around and have good time then afterwards yea they just got less funny and creative as time goes on. With maybe few exceptions. People really need to learn let things go and pace themselves with memes and jokes so they can remain funny and relevant in the future.

My favorite part of the Morbius experience had to be their social media accounts being very corporate until the Morbin' Time meme took off, Sony started embracing the meme to promote the re-release but they went back to corporate after realizing the internet trolled them.

I would argue that Morbius still has an influence on internet culture today. Any time a really bad movie trailer comes out a lot of online comments are usually something along the lines of "I love the part where _______ happens in the movie"

as far as i know, Morbius was supposed to be the main villain of Blade II, an artificially genetic vampire
but due to copyright issue from Sony, Del Toro scrapped that

I hate that they're rebooting Blade. Taking good concepts and making them into mediocre products...that's what I dislike the most about mainstream movies right now. But hey, at least we can make fun of it if it sucks (pun intended)
I heard it was because the other script proposed for Blade II was just better, so they scrapped the one with Morbius in it for the better script.
If Morbius was released as a B movie in the early 00s it would be universally praised. I actually enjoyed it, and put it on from time to time when i just want to zone out.

It's just a jumble of bad writing and the usual uninspired and unrealistic hollywood acting and dumb Marvel type super hero movie tropes and cliches with stupid action sequences, that are the usual D grade marvel level trash because they require too much suspension of disbelief for even a superhero, plus morbius the original character isnt even good...I just genuinely don't see why when theres so many other better movies to zone out and chill to...I dont get it
IMHO I think that there should be a new type of ratings made for movies because of morbius. This movie proved that not even rotten tomatoes can do this movie justice, and I think we should create a new rating system called "0 to 101% a movie" with morbius being rated 102%. Tbh, at 3:27 I kinda got mad. I GENUINELY LOVED the Venom movie. It was just, well made. The way Venom goes mad, needing food, making Eddie SICK, which also may reveal that Venom is, indeed, slowly killing Eddie. I just really likes the fact that they didn’t decide to repeat the same old “Black Suit Spider-Man Transformation” and instead gave that to Eddie in an ALTERNATE Universe.

Hi, bit late to the party, you are right he's one of my fave actors of all time, poor guy just wanted to do a vampire movie and he ended up in this. However, he did play Skynet in Terminator Genesys. And he said on a podcast a few years ago that the Palpatine role never came his way, it was all speculation, sadly. But he does put all he has into his characters.

Such nostalgia. I remember watching this movie with strangers on Twitch every single day since it became famous.
I knew every line after watching it 20 times, probably even more. 2 times per day. The have s3x scene was hyped through all the movie. The Morbius ASCII spammed, the lack of moderation. It was a good time.
