I was just a little kid in the 70s but I remember my older siblings and some of the things the kids do on the show is very similar to what they did. Except smoking weed in the basement. They go in woods and smoke it there. Their own little weed hide out lol

He wasn't really defending Eric as much as making fun of Bobs terrible parenting at that time. They were together but dating other people in front of Donna.
That's not a good thing, though. Red & Al are morons. That's how they're written: reactionary conservative morons who don't know any better. They're cynical and detached from reality.
