Stationeers - Building A Space Station using Both Hands

  • Stationeers in a station building game which loves to model all sorts of systems - power, atmosphere, data.... even which hand you're using to hold things. The inventory system is clearly influenced by Space Station 13 and this may or may not be such a good thing.

    Hey scott! The tracker thing is not a bug ( it's a feature of course ). You need to use scroll to change what you are tracking since it was tracking you. In multiplayer it's usefull for knowing where other players are

    This type of inventory based on physical locations/slots would work really well in VR. Things like swapping items from one hand to another would be intuitive instead of infuriating.

    • @cherriberri8373
      @cherriberri8373 Před 6 lety +1

      MrRolnicek there is no way this game would be goid with VR- besides, the devs have said that they are against doing any VR stuff due to keeping minimalistic performance needs.

    • @Duhya
      @Duhya Před 6 lety +1

      Adding VR support wouldn't hurt FPS for people not using VR, if anything it will make the game run better because comfortable VR requires 90+fps, so you can expect there would be optimizations and graphics options.
      But I wouldn't want to play this game in VR anyways. I'd rather play vivecraft.

    • @TheRezro
      @TheRezro Před 6 lety +9

      Definitely, but the clear difference is that it focus on survival mechanic instead on mobility. And that is generally a great trade off. Both games have something to offer, in opposition to many other clones what offer same shit, just generally more poorly executed.

    • @the2ndpete
      @the2ndpete Před 6 lety +7

      Yeah, thought the same but then I saw how many different steps were needed to set up the tracker.
      SE is definitely not user friendly if you want to do anything else than rebuild giant sci-fi show space ships (working insides are hard) but this one seems like it's got lot to do in usability to make it appealing to me.

    • @TheRezro
      @TheRezro Před 6 lety +6

      Seriously? The thing is that SE is purely about building the ships. That is why it has simplified crafting. You need only few machines to make all parts automatically. And then you build simply inserting them. This game on the other hand is pure survival. It has flaws because I don't think that mining work in this scenario. But fact that you need manually put cables and automate everything is quite significant.

    Seeing this over a year later but the tip was relevant back then, the tablet is showing the distance to you - you can change it's target by scrolling the mouse wheel. If there was another player you could also scroll to select them and it would show you their distance from you.

      That's what I was thinking. It's essentially SS13 in 3D and without the shenanigans (Yet?).
      I'm going to reserve judgement because it's still very early access, but I'm tentatively hopeful for it. SS13 would let you do some interesting stuff with the right package (and decent other players - the problem was finding a good server. A lot of them were either essentially pure shenanigans or draconian when it came to any antagonist-type stuff - I figured half the fun of some of the antag objectives would be the bomb-making mechanics or whatever, but a lot of servers I visited, such things were permaban offenses, though I suppose I never got to see it from the antag side because as far as I know, they may have never even been allowed to happen).

    Very interesting way of making a space station. The wiring and piping around the station to perform necessary survival tasks which in other games such as Space Engineers can make you take for granted. Not terribly fond of the art or graphics but it definitely has a simple charm to the added complexity to make the usually mundane task in other space survivals seem more 'entertaining', maybe even exciting.

    Hello, Scott Manley, I am an admirer of your game play in Kerbal Space Program, what you don't know is that I myself am a KSP player, and as one, I have tried to reach and sustain altitudes over 60,000 ft (18,280 m) and stay below 100,000 ft (30,480 m) with jet engines, in several ways, like basing my planes off the Lockheed U-2, flying supersonic, and heavily modifying the Osprey plane, I challenge you to try and build a multi role jet plane, these are the criteria of this plane:
    This plane must:
    Maintain and sustain and altitude of up to 100,000 ft and fly above 60,000 ft and not pass it on a trajectory
    Land on land, sea, ice
    Be an STOL plane (Short Take-Off and Landing, no assisted take offs allowed)
    Seat more than 1 person (multiple fuselages are allowed)
    Have a low stall speed (10 m/s)
    Also, no rapier engines or oxidizer is allowed, because it is cheating

      Bah, Scott only thinks the controls are too difficult because he isn't a sufficiently hardcore engineer/scientist/programmer geek.
      Sarcasm aside, I think the left/right hand and limited inventory is interesting, but the UI needs a usability overhaul. Left/Right hand should be Left/Right click - non of that unimmersive hand swapping. (That's the biggest difference between BioShock 1 & 2, and it makes a **HUGE** difference). Inventory should be limited, but your entire inventory should be visible at once by opening the backpack, with a usable drag & drop. Astroneers has the most immersive inventory system I've seen so far, that would be a good example to emulate.

      You say 'very early access' without having even played the game? The game is early access for sure, but the 'very' you add, implicating that it's a bungled mess of bugs and just plain "unfun" is definitely not true.
      Putting aside the fact that this game is pretty complicated and obviously will not be for everyone, the actual state of the game is definitely one of the better I've seen thus far on early access. The game runs smooth as butter, after ~40 hours of gameplay I haven't seen it dip below 100fps for me once. (old 2600k, gtx970, 12gb) The content within this game, while on the outside looks rather thin, is in fact quite impressive. There is a ton of stuff you need to do to just get a pressurized base in, more than you can imagine.
      While I have an automated solar array of about 10 panels, it only follows the sun using sensors and it only has three states. (sunrise>midday>sunset) While a portion of my base is semi-pressurized, I still haven't gotten my airlock fully functional just yet. 40 hours in, I'm just scratching the surface of having a fully functional base. (Although you could most certainly do it much faster by looking at tutorials and such, I prefer figuring everything out myself which is a lot of trial and error, rinse and repeat till you find something that works)
      I think $25 is on the higher-end of the spectrum for this game, I would prefer and think $20 would be a much more sound pricetag for this game. Having said that though, if you like these type of games, complex base builder suvivals, get it. It's a fantastic game for the creative tinkerer.

      No, I say very early access based on the fact that it was just released on Steam last month. My only implication was that it still has a long way to go before release.
      I do see it's potential, certainly, and it does interest me to some extent, but for the price they want, I feel like it's too much this early in the process. Part of the reason is related to the nature of EA games...
      The biggest problem with EA games, and this applies to all of them, is that it's very easy to get sick of the game before it goes full release, because the last few features were nothing special, etc. In fact, I don't know a single EA game I wasn't over before full release, and I know many that I am over already which are still in EA.

      Alright, gotcha!
      As I mentioned earlier, I do agree with the price. I think they would've done much better if they hadn't gotten with $25. As for the problems of Early Access in general, I do certainly agree with the sentiments you've laid out. It's not a perfect model by any means and I personally try to avoid EAs whenever I can because yes, often you get sick of them before they even get to a somewhat finished state.

      Seeing how DayZ was released back in December of 2013 and is still on early access, I don't have much faith for this game ever leaving early access.

    to be honest the control scheme sucks when you first start, BUT, once you get used to it, makes all the sense in the world. the control scheme allows you to rip around and do things very quickly

      Yeah. The control scheme is a bit frustrating but you get used to it. And sometimes you incinerate your tool belt in the Arc Furnace.
      After a long while in Stationeers I finally built my first pressurized base that didn't explode on me. I went inside and removed my space suit for the first time since starting the game. The feeling of excitement at being able to do this one thing can only be compared to how I felt after my first Mun landing in KSP.
