Thinning Water Sprouts

In this video we will see how an old mature apple tree can produce lots of water sprouts and how the water sprouts will shade out the lower, more productive branches. This is why it is so important to thin water sprouts to allow for sunlight to penetrate the canopy so fruit can ripen.

Yes the water sprouts will help the tree collect more light, but too many water sprouts will shade the fruit producing sours causing the fruit to abort prematurely.
