I'm shocked you hadn't heard Steeleye Span before. You and I are about the same age. In 1972 I first heard them and along with Fairport and Pentangle they were instant favorites. Your smile says it all. I wish you had seen them perform in the 70's.
Steeleye Span is an amazing band with a career spanning about 4-5 decades and many lineups. Basically Electric Folk Rock (taking older British ballads and setting them to modern electric rock scores). They have hundreds of songs over many many albums from the 70s to present. The go light, dark and all shades in between. Murder [Lord Randall, Edwin, Long Lankin], mayhem, cheeky love songs [or love 'em and leave 'em songs: Gentleman Soldier, Seventeen Come Sunday, The Ups and Downs, Bonny Black Hare, etc.], fantasy / mythical songs [Allison Gross, Elf Knight, King Henry, 700 Elves], songs about insanity [Boys of Bedlam], death [Shaking of the Sheets, Betsy Bell and Mary Gray, Let Her Go Down, The Song Will Remain, etc.], Military stuff [Fighting For Strangers, There Was a Wealthy Merchant, The Victory], silly stuff (The Fox, Skewball, Seagull, etc.)... Would love to see you react to more of their songs. Lots of good stuff available on CZcams. :)
It's the nearest you can get to a traditional English folk song, slightly nasal albeit set to a rock backing. The clip is over 40 years old but still relevant Steeleye Span are still going strong led by Maddy Prior with her still strong beautiful voice. They appear every year at the Cropreddy folk festival.Videos are available on CZcams.
Nah, Steeleye Span wins the day, pretty much all day every day, IMO... Could never get into Fairport Convention. I tried. Got through the first 5 albums and pretty much gave up hope of them being anything even remotely like Steeleye Span. Steeleye is amazing. Fairport is ... okay. At least from what I've heard so far.

Listened to about the first ~5 albums of Fairport Convention ['cause I heard the name and heard they were good and wanted to give them a chance] all the way through, ... and I gave up. If ya' can't get me in 5+ full albums, I'm afraid you've got nothing for me. Steeleye Span is in a class of their own on this stuff, as far as I can tell, in their breadth, depth, and style...
I have been a fan if Steeleye since the 70's. It always tickles me to see that smile cross people 's faces when they first hear them.

Doesn't get better than Steeleye Span with Maddy Prior, unless maybe Fairport Convention with Sandy Denny. Excellent choice!
